One Piece : Deathless Surgeon

Chapter 9: 9- Life on Ohara

Ohara, the holy land of scholars, was a beautiful island. The single gigantic tree, The Tree of Knowledge, was a spectacle to behold—it was the largest tree I had ever seen, and the fact that this tree wasn't among the largest things in this world amazed me. Many things can be said about this world: that it is cruel, unforgiving, and follows the law of the jungle—but no one can call this world boring. Well, the methods of transportation are boring, but that is only in the Four Seas; the Grand Line is much more interesting with all those chaotic seas.

Since I had planned to live in Ohara for a long time, I bought a house in the town, which was surprisingly cheap, and settled in. Unlike my stay at Flevance, I had my own home here, so I employed a maid—a young girl named Anna. She was looking for a job since she was from a poor family and was probably seen as a burden there, so I paid her a good sum to serve me as a maid. And since I was having a maid—although I don't have some maid fetish—the clothes must do their part, so I also bought a few proper sets of maid's clothes for her.

And now that I look at her—with blonde hair and blue eyes—she looked quite beautiful. With how beautiful she is, she shouldn't have to worry about money at all, but then it clicked for me: she is beautiful... and unwanted at her home... she might be sold to some noble or even worse as a slave if she didn't make money. This world really is cruel, since it is quite common for such things to happen here.

And Anna was no slouch either. Although she was a bit clumsy, she was one of the best cooks I had ever seen. Although the number of dishes she could cook was few due to her humble belongings, that would increase as she learned more; it was her talent that mattered. And so started my life in Ohara with a maid. Now was the time to go to the Tree of Knowledge, to learn about this world.

Although the scholars of Ohara were mostly focused on history, this was not the case with the library of the Tree of Knowledge. There was a saying that all the books in the world can be found here—although that was certainly not true, it was enough to show the scale of the library. There were books of almost every type, including medical books, which I wished to read eagerly, after all the medical system of this world was quite wondrous. Although some of the effects could be attributed to the physiology of the people here, it was still quite good.

As the people of this world were much stronger than those on Earth, people did not often get sick, and even if they did, the medicines that worked for the same diseases on Earth wouldn't work here, since the medicines are far too weak. Apparently even the microbes of this world were stronger; therefore, I had to adjust the doses of the medicines accordingly. But just as many minor diseases were rare here, there were some diseases that were just as serious.

And, of course, as a doctor—albeit a retired one—I must know about them and how to heal them. Since I have restarted a life, my profession would yet again be that of a doctor. I can grow strong and do whatever I wish, but I will still heal people whenever I want to. Besides that, there is also my Devil Fruit. Unlike mythical Zoans, I don't need to be near death to awaken it; it requires extreme skill and a load of medical knowledge too. Well, developing the ability to the extreme would also lead to its awakening, but since I have decided to study, I would study.

Entering the Tree of Knowledge was... well, too easy. I just told them that I was a doctor and that I came here to study and learn, and they just let me in. Of course, that was just for the books above, not the ones hidden underground—those are secrets they need to hide from the World Government, and unless they absolutely trust me, they probably wouldn't let me in there.

But the fact that they just let me in, saying that knowledge is free for everyone, certainly did give me a good impression of them. If saving them didn't mean having to fight against two admiral-level marines, I might be tempted to save them. But since I won't be helping them directly, I could at least give them a warning so they could leave this place.

As for the civilians of Ohara, my impression of them wasn't that good, considering I had just encountered Anna's case and had seen Robin's childhood in the anime. I wasn't that keen on saving them, since it's a thankless task with a lot of trouble involved. And what I hate the most is trouble. I don't take action until necessary, and when I do, I always figure out a way that causes me the least trouble—this has always been my motto: don't invite trouble until absolutely necessary.

And as I started studying in the Tree of Knowledge, time seemed to move faster than Kizaru. Over a year had passed since I came here, and it was during this time that Nico Robin was born. I also came to know Nico Olvia, but I didn't like her much—especially her action of leaving her daughter back home when she was just two. She was married to another archaeologist who was dedicated to studying history (probably the Void Century), and he had been sick for a long time and died only a few months ago.

Ohara really is a treasure trove. The more I read, the more fascinated I became. Till now, I've read over 500 books, and all this mental work gave me the idea of exercising my brain too, which doesn't necessarily make me smarter than I already am but does increase my clarity, thinking speed, and memory. I have almost reached photographic memory—just look at a page once, and I'm done—which has greatly increased my learning speed.

Two more years passed, and Nico Olvia left on her expedition, leaving behind the two-year-old Robin—which was a dick move. She was often bullied back in Ohara; I guess I can help her out later and encourage her to come to the Tree of Knowledge sooner, and then I can leave Ohara before the buster call, with both Anna and Robin.

Yeah, in the past three years, I had grown close to Anna... very close. Alright, we had already slept together. I had been in this world for so long and hadn't had any sex until I came here, so my frustration level was off the charts. I had controlled myself with unimaginable difficulty back in Flevance with Helena, and that was only possible because I didn't want to be a dick to Phoebe and Jeremy. They saw me as a brother, and it would be bad if I was found seducing their mother.

So living with a beautiful woman now was bound to lead to such things. That's right—Anna moved in with me. This happened after one day I saw some scars on her; apparently, her father had beaten her up to take her savings for buying alcohol. So I went and gave them a million berries and told them never to contact Anna again. Of course, I also gave her father a disease—he died after a few months. Nothing much, since if he could beat my lovely Anna for some alcohol, I magnified the ailments caused by it to near-death levels, basically destroying his liver. He died a painful death.

My Devil Fruit had reached an unimaginably high level by now, and I was sure that it would awaken anytime soon, and my physique was already strong enough to earn me a bounty of over 500 million without my abilities. As for swordsmanship... it had regressed to become even worse—I had completely stopped practicing it since I was busy studying. I would have to work on it later.

"Master, you have been studying for hours. Come and have dinner first, then you will sleep—you can study tomorrow," Anna said to me... commandingly? "Dear, you call me master, yet you are giving me orders. That's not how things work, right?" I said jokingly.

"Huhhh, okay then, master, I will give you a massage while you go to sleep after having dinner," Anna said with a smile.
