Chapter 23: Peter The King -21

After noticing that the other person was looking at her, Vivi quickly turned her gaze away and shrank in her seat.

Peter calmly turned his head and asked Robin, who was elegantly preparing coffee on the couch in the corner:

"Are you sure you didn't say anything too harsh to her?"

"Yes, yes." Robin smiled and nodded.

"Then why does she look so scared of me?"

Robin stirred the coffee with her bare hands, then tapped her chin with her fingertips and "guessed":

"Maybe because you look way too intimidating, boss. And honestly… that outfit really doesn't suit you."

"You have no taste. This is what's called maturity, don't you get it?"

Peter mumbled something under his breath, then silently took off his coat and suit jacket, leaving only a light gray shirt. He also removed the cigar from his mouth and put it out.

"What's the matter? Can't handle a little smoke?"

Whether it was because his appearance was no longer intimidating, or due to the relaxed conversation with Robin, Vivi seemed to ease up a little after Peter shed that flashy image.

'I shouldn't have tried copying Crocodile's style... a defeated warlord can't look cool and elegant like me anyway.'

While thinking, Peter leaned his elbows on the table, laced his fingers in front of his face, and leaned forward slightly.

"Nefertari Vivi... there's something I'd like to say to you."

'Oh no... he looks scary again!!'

Vivi panicked, too terrified to even know how to respond or start talking.

"Boss, maybe tone it down a little? Try sounding a bit friendlier," Robin stepped in at the perfect time.

"Really?" Peter, who had looked rather imposing just a moment ago, deflated instantly and slumped in his chair.

"Forget it... I'm really not good at pretending to be deep."

The sudden change was so jarring that Vivi couldn't help but complain internally:

'Be serious, you jerk! I was on the verge of dying from fright!'

Peter leaned back in his office chair, propped his legs up on the table, and spoke casually:

"I'll be honest with you. Over the past three years, there haven't been any floods in Alabasta—except in the capital. You know who was behind all that?"

Vivi hesitated, then said, "Actually... I figured it out when I was in Baroque Works HQ. It was Crocodile."

She had initially meant to say "the former boss," but changed her words out of respect for the current leader sitting before her.

Peter didn't care about that at all and nodded:

"Exactly. I took down Crocodile and crushed his little scheme.

So now I'm basically the hero of Alabasta. The kingdom's savior."

"...Okay?" Vivi still sounded unsure, not understanding where this was going.

"Hmm?" (Annoyed expression)

"Oh! Right, of course!" Vivi quickly nodded, acknowledging his contribution on behalf of her father.

Peter's expression finally eased.

"And as a hero, wouldn't it be fair for me to ask the royal family for a few perks?"

Gulp...

'Here we go. He's going to start extorting us now...'

Vivi answered cautiously, "As long as the request isn't... unreasonable, the royal family will surely agree."

"Alright... I want the royal family to exempt my casino from taxes."

"Absolutely not, I can't possibly—wait, what?!"

She froze mid-sentence, completely thrown off.

'Tax exemption? That's it?'

"You're not even willing to approve such a small request?" Peter looked displeased, making Vivi panic and wave her hands.

"No, no! I mean—it's totally fine! That's a very minor request, especially considering what you've done for Alabasta.

You could ask for more and we wouldn't object!"

"Really?" A sly smile crept onto Peter's lips.

"Of course!" Vivi puffed out her chest like a generous noble and even laughed secretly to herself:

'That's it? I'd say yes even if he asked for ten times that much.'

Peter said, "I also want to buy some property in Rainland."

Vivi: "No problem at all! I can even allocate some spaces for you personally!"

Peter: "And I want to build a fun street… kind of like a theme park."

Vivi: "A fun street? I'm not sure what that is, but if it's a business venture, then sure!"

Peter: "I want to build a new port."

Vivi: "Great idea! That would help boost the economy too."

And so Peter continued listing requests—seven or eight in total—all of which were harmless or even beneficial to the kingdom's development.

Vivi agreed to every single one without hesitation.

By the end, she wasn't even listening anymore—just saying "Yes, okay" automatically to everything.

Then suddenly, Peter switched tone:

"I also want to marry you and become the king of Alabasta."

"Yeah, sure, that's just marri—wait, what?"

Her voice cut off. The formal smile froze on her face.

Her eyes widened in confusion and disbelief as she pointed at herself, then at Peter, mouthing words that wouldn't come out.

Her dumbfounded expression made Peter burst into laughter, clutching his stomach.

"Hahahaha! Robin, I told you she'd agree without even being pressured!

This is the first time I've seen such a gullible girl. I'm seriously dying over here!"

Robin, still watching quietly from the corner, let out a sigh and thought to herself:

He could've easily forced her into agreeing… but he went with tricking an innocent girl instead. This man really is rotten to the core.
