Chapter 83: Chapter 83: An Encounter with the Red-Haired Pirates
Master's motherly instincts seemed to have gone into overdrive. She took a liking to Ulti and Page One, showing an endless patience even for Ulti's sharp tongue and doting on the more well-behaved Page One with frequent hugs. It was hard to imagine how these two siblings might react if they ever learned Master was actually a man.
After Kaido's departure, Jack and his crew spent a few days resting on the island before setting sail. Chasing Kaido for so long had taken its toll—on both the crew and the ship. Though Jack initially thought the island was uninhabited, there turned out to be a small town nearby. He decided not to disturb the locals and let his crew recover in peace.
A few days later, the Mammoth was back at sea. As the ship sailed, Ulti's mouth seemed incapable of staying shut. She mocked one crewmate, insulted another, and generally acted as though she had no fear of Jack's crew. The Fish-Men, out of respect for Jack, ignored her antics, while the human crewmates wouldn't stoop to a child's level. This only emboldened Ulti further, and her relentless barbs began to wear on the crew's patience.
Pirates, after all, were a rough and rowdy lot, and this crew had its fair share of short tempers. Even with Jack's authority keeping them in check, it was only a matter of time before someone snapped. That someone turned out to be Jack himself.
It happened when Ulti teased one of the crewmates, Mark, about his appearance.
"Ulti! Stop saying Mark's face looks like a butt! He's just… a little well-fed, that's all!" Jack growled, his patience finally at its limit.
"But it does look like a butt. I'm not wrong," Ulti replied smugly.
"You little brat! Shut it!" Jack roared. "Don't think you can get away with anything just because you're a kid! I've tolerated your nonsense for days, but you've pushed me too far!"
Before she could react, Jack transformed into his massive Mammoth form. His trunk shot out and lifted her effortlessly into the air.
"W-what?!" Ulti's defiance quickly turned to panic. "Aaaaah! Peji! Help me!" she screamed, tears streaming down her face.
"Let go of my sister, you monster!" Page One yelled, charging at Jack and kicking him with all his strength. The attack barely made a dent.
"Oh, you're challenging me now? Fine! You can join her!" Jack snorted, swinging his trunk.
"Peji! Run!" Ulti cried.
"Sis!" Page One shouted back, refusing to back down.
Just then, Master stepped in, trembling slightly as he tried to diffuse the situation.
"Jack-sama, please, they're just children. Surely you can forgive them this once?"
Jack's eyes narrowed. "Just children, huh?" He lowered the siblings to the deck but kept his stern glare fixed on Master. "Brats like them don't get this bold without someone enabling them. This is your fault too!"
Before Master could respond, Jack barked, "Rim! You deal with him. Use the flat of your blade!"
Rim hesitated but obeyed, delivering a swift, controlled strike to Master's backside with his sword's scabbard. Master let out a pained yelp, his legs wobbling beneath him.
"If you make that noise again, I'll toss you overboard myself!" Jack threatened. Then, turning to Rim, he added gruffly, "And you! If you're going to keep philosophizing with Master every day, do it in private! I'm sick of hearing it."
Despite the harsh reprimand, the incident had its effect. Ulti toned down her behavior considerably after that.
As the days passed, Jack made another discovery. The reason the siblings always wore masks wasn't just for show. Like Jack, they had Fish-Man heritage. The masks hid their sharp teeth, a telltale sign of their lineage. However, unlike Jack, their mixed blood left them with only subtle traits—besides their fangs and small horns, they looked entirely human.
The Mammoth eventually reached the Sabaody Archipelago, a necessary stop to coat the ship before crossing into the New World. The island was heavily patrolled by Marines, but that never deterred the flow of pirates heading for the Grand Line's most dangerous waters.
While the ship underwent its coating, Jack and his Fish-Man crew stayed aboard to avoid unwanted attention. Master, however, disguised himself and took the siblings ashore for a few days of fun. When they returned, they brought back bags of goods and a peculiar gift for Jack—grilled elephant ribs.
Jack shook his head at the offering. "Where did you even find elephant ribs on Sabaody?" he muttered. Ulti grinned cheekily but said nothing.
After a brief stop at Fish-Man Island to let some of the crew visit their homeland, the Mammoth resumed its journey. Jack's excitement grew as he steered the ship toward their next destination. With Kaido and King occupied elsewhere, and Queen stationed at Udon, the women back at Onigashima—Black Maria and Yamato—were entirely unsupervised. Jack had been eagerly keeping in touch with them and could hardly wait to see them again.
His enthusiasm led him to choose a different route on the way back. Following the sea charts, the Mammoth sailed toward a remote island. As they neared their destination, the lookout shouted,
"Enemy ship spotted!"
Jack and his officers rushed to the deck, spyglasses in hand. On the shore of the island ahead, a pirate ship was anchored. Its figurehead was a crude red dragon's head, and its Jolly Roger featured a skull with three slashed scars over one eye.
Jack frowned. "That flag… it looks familiar."
Rim stiffened. "Jack-sama, that's the Red-Haired Pirates. Shanks' crew. They're a major force in the New World. We can't underestimate them."
Jack's lips curled into a grin as he spotted smoke rising from the island's forest. "Oh, really? Then let's go introduce ourselves." He bellowed to the crew, "Set course for the island! Bring us alongside!"
