Chapter 84: Chapter 84: You Bastard, Stop Right There!
The moment Rim mentioned the Red-Haired Pirates, Jack immediately realized who owned this ship.
Red-Haired Shanks.
Jack had heard the name more than once. Even Kaido and King had spoken about him. Their tone when mentioning Shanks was different—almost like they respected the guy.
Of course, Kaido's compliments were as subtle as ever. His exact words were:
"I heard that brat Shanks has been beating up some big names since he came to the New World."
"And with just a handful of crew members on his ship. Gotta admit, he's got a bit of Roger's style."
"Hmph! The sea's full of weaklings if even a kid like that can make a name for himself."
After setting sail, Jack had pieced together quite a bit about the Red-Haired Pirates from newspapers and crew gossip. Unlike most pirate crews, Shanks's team was small but terrifyingly elite.
Every crew member was a powerhouse with massive bounties to their names. Recently, they had even expanded by aligning with large fleets and seizing territories.
Running into them here left Jack excited. He was feeling confident, and a fight with these guys promised hefty rewards from the system. Even if he lost, he wasn't too worried—nobody in the New World dared to outright kill a member of the Beasts Pirates. Not unless they wanted to face Kaido's dragon form or King's relentless pursuit.
As the Mammoth approached a desolate island, a group emerged from the forest ahead. It didn't take long for them to notice the ship heading their way.
"Oi, Shanks. This might be trouble," said Ben Beckman, his calm voice tinged with a hint of concern. He wore a black tank top and had a cigar hanging from his lips. "That guy over there... that's Jack the Drought from the Beasts Pirates. And judging by the look on his face, we're his target."
"Ha! Hic!" Shanks, bottle in hand and arm draped over Lucky Roux's shoulder, laughed dismissively.
"So what? Let's just run away!"
"Ton ton ton..."
Standing nearby, Limejuice, wearing sunglasses and casual attire, exchanged a glance with Hongo, who had a scar running across his forehead. They both sighed before shouting, "Captain! I don't think we'll make it in time!"
Sure enough, Jack leaped onto the ship's railing and yelled, "Get closer! I'll take care of them myself!"
He was about to jump when his foot slipped on something. His trajectory went wildly off course, and he ended up plummeting awkwardly to the ground, landing on his back.
"Ugh..." Jack sat up, dizzy, and glanced at the banana peel stuck to his shoe. His frustration boiled over as he roared at the Mammoth crew, "Who the hell threw this banana peel?!"
Onboard, Ulti finished the last bite of her banana, smirking mischievously. "Too bad it didn't kill you, you dumb elephant."
"Phew..."
Beckman exhaled a puff of smoke, his eyes sharp as he addressed Jack.
"Forget about the banana peel for now. Don't you think you should, y'know, stand up?"
"Huh? Why?" Jack's defiance was clear as he glared back. "What's it to you? This your land or something? I'll sit wherever I damn well please!"
Beckman shook his head and replied calmly, "It's not about land rights. It's just... if you don't get up soon, you might crush our captain."
"Our captain?" Jack blinked, then looked down to see a pair of legs sticking out from under him. His eyes widened as he jumped to his feet, accidentally stomping down—hard—on Shanks's waist.
"CRACK!"
"AHH!"
Shanks let out a pained cry as Beckman and the others broke into a cold sweat, rushing over to check on their captain.
"Captain! You okay?"
"Shanks! Say something!"
"Slap slap..."
Jack stood awkwardly off to the side as the crew tried to shake their captain awake.
Meanwhile, a familiar notification echoed in Jack's mind:
"Congratulations, host! You've successfully docked. Due to inactivity, the system has automatically drawn a reward!"
"Congratulations! You've received a Flash Reward: Beginner-level Conqueror's Haki!"
What the hell?! Jack's mind reeled as new knowledge seemed to pour into his head. His eyes darted to the system panel, where "Beginner-level Conqueror's Haki" glowed obnoxiously.
Banana peel or not, whoever threw it had just done him a massive favor.
Still... should he fight Shanks now? The reward was already in the bag, so what was the point of risking it?
After a moment of thought, Jack cleared his throat and turned to Beckman and the others.
"Ahem. Sorry about that. We'll be on our way now. And, uh, about your captain—my bad."
He made to retreat, but before he could board the Mammoth, Shanks suddenly stirred.
"Hurk..."
"Cough cough..."
A rancid stench spread as Shanks sat up, causing everyone to back away. Glaring at Jack with bloodshot eyes, he growled, "Oi, you bastard! Stop right there!"
Oh crap.
Jack bolted, yelling over his shoulder, "Sorry! My bad! Let's just call it even, okay?!"
"You think I'll let you off that easy? Get back here so I can smash your face in!"
"No way!" Jack shouted as he ran faster. "I said I'm sorry! Don't be so petty!"
"You're dead, you hear me?! Stand still so I can hit you!"
"Fat chance!"
Jack had almost made it to the Mammoth when he felt an overwhelming pressure. He turned to see Shanks glaring at him, his aura suffocating.
"Do we really have to do this?" Jack sighed, reluctantly reaching for his spiked club. "Can't we solve this peacefully?"
"Fine by me," Shanks growled. "Let me sit on you and stomp your guts, and we'll call it even."
Jack muttered under his breath, "Why do I even bother..."
Gripping his weapon tightly, Jack stepped forward. "Alright, fine. Bring it on!"
