Chapter 34: Chapter 34: Awakening the Flow of Power
"This is..."
The dark metallic sheen that flickered across Luffy's fist like captured starlight made Akira bolt upright in his narrow bunk, sleep instantly evaporating from his mind.
"Armament Haki!!!" he breathed, his voice cracking with disbelief and overwhelming pride.
"Luffy, you have finally mastered the Armament Haki!"
Two long years had passed since Akira had first explained the existence of Armament Haki to his rubber-powered captain. Two years of theoretical instruction, practical exercises, and countless failed attempts that had tested both their patience and their resolve.
But here, on the third night of their journey, in the early morning hours when the world was shrouded in darkness, Luffy had finally bridged the gap between knowledge and ability.
The coating of Haki on Luffy's fist might be thin and unstable, flickering like a candle flame in a strong wind, but it was undeniably real. Once a person successfully took that crucial first step, Akira knew from experience that future progress would accelerate exponentially.
After all, Luffy was essentially a Normal-type Pokémon in this strange fusion of worlds. His natural affinity for augmenting his body through willpower made Armament Haki a perfect complement to his existing strengths.
But something puzzled Akira as he studied his captain's triumphant expression. When they had emerged from the Gym Challenge, Luffy had explicitly stated that he couldn't feel any trace of Haki Energy. So why had he suddenly awakened the power right after leaving the virtual world?
A thoughtful gleam appeared in Akira's dark eyes as he analyzed the sequence of events.
If anything had changed during their gaming session, it would have been his decision to take Luffy to the Pokémon Center for a full restoration before logging out. The mysterious healing technology had returned his captain to peak physical and mental condition within seconds.
"Was it Luffy's optimized state that activated his body's latent potential?" he thought silently. "Or did the Pokémon Center somehow inject energy during the treatment that could trigger Haki's awakening?"
The implications were staggering. In the original games, Pokémon Centers could instantly heal even critically injured creatures through some unexplained technological means. Players accepted it as a convenient gameplay mechanic, a simple string of code that eliminated the tedium of managing wounded party members.
But if Pokémon energy could manifest in the real world, as he'd already proven with his abilities, then perhaps the Center's healing effects had additional properties beyond simple health restoration.
"I should test this theory with Zoro later," Akira decided, filing the hypothesis away for future experimentation.
Putting aside his analytical thoughts, he allowed genuine warmth to flood his expression as he looked at his captain's eager face.
"Congratulations, Luffy!" His voice was filled with pride and relief. "This means I don't have to worry about the Loguetown Navy posing a serious threat to us."
"Hahahaha!" Luffy's laughter rang out like church bells celebrating victory. "No matter what kind of enemy we face, I will defeat them all without hesitation!"
His newly awakened haki had filled him with exhilarating confidence. His eyes blazed with inner fire, reflecting the same determination that had driven him to set sail in the first place. The boy who had once struggled with basic fighting techniques now possessed one of the fundamental powers needed to survive the dangers of the Grand Line.
After celebrating with Luffy for several more minutes, exhaustion finally claimed their rubber captain. The excitement of his breakthrough had temporarily energized him, but the late hour and the mental strain of intense concentration began to take their toll.
With one last enthusiastic grin, Luffy made his way back to his own cabin, leaving Akira alone on the moonlit deck.
Only then did Akira have the opportunity to examine his own rewards from their virtual adventure. The badge upgrade he'd been expecting had been temporarily forgotten in the excitement of Luffy's Haki Awakening.
Settling into a comfortable position, he activated his internal console interface and navigated to Luffy's updated stats from their recent gym victory.
[Pokémon: Monkey D. Luffy] [Level: 47] [Experience: 278/7,057] [HP: 198 (+4)] [Attack: 144 (+3)] [Defense: 156 (+3)] [Special Attack: 124 (+3)] [Special Defense: 138 (+3)] [Speed: 141 (+3)]
Defeating Misty's two Pokémon had earned Luffy 552 experience points, enough to push him over the threshold to level 47. The upgrade had improved every aspect of his abilities, with HP increasing by four points and all other attributes increasing by three points.
Without reference standards from other enhanced individuals, Akira couldn't be sure of the practical effects of these improvements. However, comparing Luffy's stats to legendary Pokémon from the original games suggested that his captain had reached truly extraordinary levels of power.
And that was appropriate. After all, he was Monkey D. Luffy, the future pirate king whose destiny would reshape the world itself.
After reviewing Luffy's progress, Akira turned his attention to his own development. The [Badge Collector] achievement had promised improvements tied to each gym's elemental specialty, and the effects of the Cascade Badge were dramatically different from its predecessor.
Where the Boulder Badge had given him the solid stability of living stone, the Cascade Badge brought an entirely different sensation. A pleasant lightness permeated his body, as if gravity's hold on him had been reduced by subtle degrees. More importantly, he felt a constant sensation of moisture and comfort flowing through his system like a gentle internal current.
If the Boulder Badge had provided defensive capabilities, the Cascade Badge seemed to focus on recovery and endurance. The enhancement kept his body and mind in a state of optimal comfort while dramatically accelerating his natural healing processes.
Given Akira's already superhuman endurance, this additional recovery boost pushed him even closer to functional immortality, at least by East Blue standards. More importantly, the effect went beyond simple injury healing to include physical endurance and mental energy restoration.
His stamina had been increased to almost limitless levels.
"Incredible," he murmured with satisfaction. "I used to envy Luffy's access to Pokémon Center healing. With that ability, I've basically become a perpetual motion machine myself."
With his personal upgrades analyzed, Akira turned his attention back to the console interface. The lottery notification continued to blink in the corner of his vision, promising access to Water-type moves as a reward for clearing the Cerulean Gym.
A touch of his consciousness materialized the familiar spinning wheel, its sections displaying various aquatic techniques ranging from basic water manipulation to legendary oceanic powers.
"Time for another round of chance," he said with anticipation, rubbing his hands together before pressing the [Start] button.
Rather than endure the psychological torture of watching the wheel spin, Akira deliberately pulled his attention away from the console. The random number generation would continue regardless of his observation, and avoiding the suspense seemed like the wiser choice.
After about thirty seconds, long enough for even the most dramatic spinning animation to end, he reconnected his consciousness to view the results.
A system message immediately caught his full attention:
[Congratulations! You have received the Move: Surf!]
A wave of foreign knowledge crashed through Akira's mind like a tsunami of pure information. Mysterious energy flowed through his body with the unstoppable force of an ocean tide, taking up permanent residence in his bones and muscles.
Sea-blue light flickered behind his eyes for several heartbeats, as if miniature oceans were being born and contained within his vision. When the sensation finally faded, he examined his hands with wonder and growing excitement.
Even though Surf didn't require any hand-based activation, the sudden sense of control over basic forces was intoxicating beyond description.
"Surf?" he whispered in genuine surprise. "That's quite an unexpected prize."
Focusing on the console, he accessed the move's detailed specifications:
[Move: Surf] [Type: Water] [Category: Special] [Power: 90] [Description: A versatile Pokémon technique. Condenses Water-type energy to create massive waves that can devastate enemies. Can manipulate nearby water sources to create tsunami-sized attacks. Additionally, mastery of this move allows for free movement across water surfaces with minimal energy expenditure].
"Another technique with extensive utility!" Akira's face broke into a satisfied grin as he absorbed the full potential of the move.
Despite the late hour, the Cascade Badge's recovery enhancement had already restored his mental energy to peak levels. Unable to resist testing his new ability, he made his way out onto the deck, where starlight painted silver paths across the gentle waves.
The night sky stretched endlessly above him, a canvas of diamonds scattered across black velvet. Standing beneath this cosmic display, Akira slowly stretched out his palm toward the ocean that stretched beyond their small ship.
"Surf!"
Instantly, deep blue light flowed through his eyes like liquid sapphire.
The next moment, a small tsunami over fifteen meters long and over five meters high erupted from the previously calm sea. The massive wave surged forward with tremendous force, its crest gleaming white in the moonlight as it carried enough water to flood a small village.
CRASH!!!
The artificial tsunami merged back into the vast ocean with a thunderous crash, creating ripples that spread outward in perfect circles. Where the sea had been smooth as glass moments before, now gentle swells marked the passage of tremendous forces.
"Impressive results," Akira observed with satisfaction.
Although his attack hadn't caused any lasting disturbance in the infinite ocean, that was only because he had attacked the sea itself. If he had stood on land and faced human opponents, such a concentrated tsunami would have been a potentially deadly attack, especially against Devil Fruit users who couldn't survive immersion in seawater.
Of course, no technique was without its limitations. Even as he appreciated Surf's destructive potential, Akira noted several important drawbacks.
"Significant energy consumption," he muttered thoughtfully, assessing the drain on his enhanced reserves.
Even with the Cascade Badge's endurance enhancements, he estimated that he could only use Surf five times in a row before requiring recovery time. The technique required considerable power to manipulate such massive amounts of water.
In addition, the activation of the move wasn't instantaneous. Against highly mobile opponents, especially those who had mastered techniques like Soru's, the telegraphed nature of his preparation would likely allow for easy evasion.
"But then again," he said with philosophical acceptance, "no technique is perfect on its own."
Rather than dwell on the limitations, Akira decided to explore the secondary applications of surfing. According to the description, he should be able to manipulate existing water sources instead of creating waves out of thin air.
His eyes gleamed with anticipation as possibilities began to form in his strategic mind.
"Let's see what other creative applications this skill might have."
