Chapter 35: Chapter 35: The Tides of Fate
Under the soft glow of the pale moonlight, Akira made his way to the stern of their small sailboat, his footsteps muffled by the rhythmic creaking of the wooden planks beneath his feet.
The sea stretched endlessly before him, its surface dancing with layers of silvery waves that caught and reflected the celestial light like scattered diamonds. Each gentle swell seemed to whisper secrets of the vast ocean's hidden depths.
Looking down into the dark waters below, Akira felt that familiar azure glow flicker behind his eyes, the telltale sign of Pokémon energy responding to his will.
"Surf," he whispered to the restless sea.
Whoosh,
An invisible wave of power surged from his body, flowing outward like liquid starlight to embrace the nearest patch of ocean. The moment his energy made contact, the seawater transformed into something alive and eager, surging upward with newfound purpose.
Within heartbeats, a massive wave had materialized before him, easily twice the height of their ship. But unlike his earlier destructive demonstration, this aquatic giant remained perfectly stable under his control, frozen in time like a living sculpture of water and moonlight.
While maintaining the delicate balance of energy required to sustain the wave, Akira murmured his observations aloud: "Using Surf to manipulate existing water sources requires far less energy than creating waves out of nothing."
His analytical mind catalogued every detail as he experimented with different applications. "For the same wave size, the energy cost is barely a fraction of what I used before. And the level of control..."
Azure light blazed brighter in his eyes as he increased his output, watching the seawater respond with eager obedience.
The wave began to grow, drawing more and more ocean into its towering form. The water condensed and compressed until what had been an impressive display became something truly magnificent, a liquid mountain rising over ten meters high behind their ship.
Under Akira's precise guidance, this aquatic behemoth followed their ship like a faithful guardian, maintaining the perfect distance to avoid any danger to its sleeping crewmates.
Any ordinary navigator who witnessed such an impossible sight would have questioned his own sanity.
"Incredible," Akira breathed, his voice filled with genuine wonder at his own abilities.
"With direct water manipulation, Surf transforms from a simple attack to sustained hydrokinetic control. The limitation is that I can only shape the water into wave forms rather than achieve true fluid manipulation."
His eyes gleamed with strategic possibilities as he continued his analysis. "Without the massive energy condensation required for combat applications, the impact force relies solely on the wave's natural momentum. But even so..."
A predatory smile crossed his features as visions of future battles played in his mind. He could already see the terror in the enemy's eyes as pursuing ships faced the fury of the ocean itself.
And this is just the beginning, he thought with growing excitement. As I collect more badges and progress through the games, my power will continue to grow exponentially.
Perhaps one day I'll be able to create tsunamis that rival Whitebeard's earthquake-generated waves with nothing more than a casual gesture.
The thought sent a thrill of anticipation through his enhanced body. But even more immediate applications demanded his attention.
With a subtle flick of his wrist, Akira split the massive wave neatly in half. The divided waters separated again and again until he'd created a fleet of smaller waves, each about half the height of his ship.
Under his precise command, these aquatic servants gathered beneath the hull of their ship, pushing upward with coordinated force to propel them forward at dramatically increased speed.
The sudden acceleration sent spray dancing across the deck as their modest sailboat reached speeds that should have been impossible for its size and design.
Feeling the increased sea breeze whip through his hair, only one rueful thought crossed Akira's mind:
Damn it... I really am going to be the crew's own transportation system.
The first golden rays of dawn painted the eastern horizon in brilliant shades of amber and rose, gradually driving away the shadows of night. One by one, the Straw Hat Pirates emerged from their cramped quarters, drawn by the unusual sensation of their ship cutting through the waves at supernatural speed.
Luffy was the first to spot their second-in-command, finding Akira sitting cross-legged near the stern in deep meditation, his entire body radiating the serene calm of someone at peace with the world.
"Hey! Akira!" Luffy bounded forward with characteristic enthusiasm, his rubber sandals slapping on the deck. "Why are you sitting out here?"
Having sailed with Akira longer than anyone else on board, Luffy knew his friend's habits well. While the strategist was never one to sleep until noon, he definitely wasn't the type to greet the sunrise voluntarily, especially not after their extended gaming session the night before.
The sound of his captain's voice seemed to gently pull Akira out of his meditative trance. His dark eyes slowly opened and focused with the gradual awareness of someone emerging from the depths.
"Ah, morning already, Luffy," he replied with a warm smile, carefully dissipating the Ancient Power that had been flowing through his body in restorative cycles.
Stretching with obvious satisfaction as he rose to his feet, Akira gazed appreciatively at the brightening sky. "Time really flies when you're experimenting with new skills."
Meanwhile, both Zoro and Nami had joined their meeting, drawn by curiosity about their unusually energetic vice captain.
"What exactly have you been doing out here all night?" Nami asked, her navigator's instincts having already detected something unusual about their current sailing conditions.
"Ah, that..." Akira's grin turned slightly mischievous as he leaned against the ship's railing. "Look down and see for yourself."
"Huh?" All three crewmembers moved in unison to peer over the side.
What they discovered left them speechless with amazement.
A small army of waves clustered around their hull like devoted servants, propelling their ship forward with a coordinated effort that seemed almost intelligent. The sight resembled nothing so much as a school of aquatic creatures working together to facilitate their passage.
Nami's eyes widened in sudden understanding. "So that's why the wind patterns felt wrong this morning! I thought we were experiencing some sort of unusual weather phenomenon."
Her eyes snapped back to Akira with growing excitement. "This is another one of your abilities, isn't it?"
After witnessing so many impossible demonstrations by their mysterious second-in-command, the crew had learned to accept such wondrous displays with relative equanimity. Their initial shock was quickly replaced by eager curiosity about the practical applications.
"Exactly right," Akira confirmed with obvious pride, deciding to provide a more dramatic demonstration of his newfound mastery.
Whoosh,
Azure light came to life in his eyes as he reached out with his enhanced senses to embrace the surrounding ocean. The sea immediately responded to his call.
Their entire ship suddenly shook as the water beneath them began to rise, lifting their vessel high into the air on the crest of a massive wave. Like expert surfers riding the perfect break, they found themselves hurtling forward at exhilarating speed.
"This is my latest skill," Akira announced over the rush of wind and spray, his voice carrying easily despite the chaotic environment. "I call it surfing!"
His confident smile radiated the unmistakable charisma of one who had just discovered he could reshape the battlefield itself.
"With this power at our disposal, all future sea battles will be ours. The ocean itself will fight at our side!"
"AWESOME!" Luffy's enthusiastic shout rang out over the water as he threw both arms skyward in celebration. "Akira, you're amazing!"
His joy was contagious and genuine, each new demonstration of his friend's abilities only reinforcing his conviction that choosing Akira as Vice Captain had been the best decision of his life.
"Thank you for the kind words," Akira replied graciously, though he couldn't quite hide his satisfaction at such heartfelt approval.
With a casual gesture, he guided their impromptu water ride back to normal sailing conditions. While he'd intended the demonstration primarily as a way to familiarize his crew with his abilities, he couldn't deny the pleasure he took in their astonished reactions.
The demonstration also served an important practical purpose. When they inevitably faced dangerous situations in the future, having his teammates understand the full range of his abilities could mean the difference between victory and defeat.
As the waves settled back into their supportive formation beneath the hull, Akira's expression became slightly rueful. Though he'd initially resisted the idea of becoming the crew's personal propulsion system, his experiments had shown that his enhanced recovery rate could easily offset the energy cost of sustained wave manipulation.
For the sake of reaching their destination faster, he figured he could sacrifice his dignity a little.
"Oh, Nami," he said, turning to their navigator with renewed focus. "Can you pinpoint our current position? I'd like to know how long it will take to reach Syrup Village at this speed."
"Let me check," Nami replied, pulling out a detailed sea chart from what Akira had come to think of as her mysterious storage space. She also took out an unfamiliar navigational instrument and began to take careful measurements.
After several minutes of precise calculations, she looked up with a satisfied expression.
"If we can maintain this speed, we should reach Syrup Village around three o'clock this afternoon!"
"Excellent," Akira nodded with genuine joy. "My overnight efforts were not in vain after all."
Satisfied with their progress, he turned his attention to the day's training agenda. His strategic mind was already planning how to maximize their remaining time before reaching their next destination.
"Well, since a new day has begun and Luffy's Armament Haki is finally showing real progress, let's discuss today's objectives."
He looked at his captain with an encouraging but firm look. "Luffy, your primary task is to continue to familiarize yourself with the application of Haki. I want you to reach the point where you can maintain the coating throughout an entire battle."
"Zoro, continue with your current training program, but don't neglect your swordsmanship basics. As soon as Luffy achieves better haki control, he can guide your own development."
His expression became slightly apologetic as he continued. "Though I should warn you not to expect too much from Luffy as a teacher. You know his teaching style as well as I do. Everything will ultimately depend on your own efforts and insights.
"In addition, I would like to discuss some advanced sword techniques that might complement your three-blade style, and,"
Squawk!
A messenger seagull with a distinctive blue beret suddenly landed on their railing, interrupting Akira's training lecture with its harsh cry. The bird regarded her with the professional patience of a postman waiting for payment.
"Ah, the morning paper," Akira observed with mild interest. "Nami, would you mind handling the transaction?"
Since joining the crew and proving her complete loyalty, Nami had naturally taken control of their financial affairs. Akira found such mundane tasks tedious and was more than happy to delegate them to someone with real financial instincts.
"Of course," Nami replied cheerfully, exchanging the appropriate coins for her daily delivery of news.
But as she unfolded the newspaper, something unexpected tumbled out from between the pages, a crisp, new bounty poster that landed face up on the deck.
The photo staring back at her showed Luffy's grinning face in perfect detail, captured in what appeared to be a moment of pure joy.
"What?!" All four pirates stared at the unexpected document in stunned silence.
Akira was the first to recover and grabbed the bounty poster with obvious joy. "Luffy! You are now officially wanted!"
His voice carried genuine pride as he continued. "Your name is about to be known throughout the world!"
"Really?! Are you serious?!" Luffy practically vibrated with excitement as he leaned over Akira's shoulder to examine his first bounty.
The wanted poster bore the Navy's official seal and formal language, marking it as completely legitimate:
[STRAW HAT] MONKEY D. LUFFY DEAD OR ALIVE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS
BOUNTY: 50,000,000 BERRIES
The number seemed to glow on the page like captured sunlight, representing a sum that would be considered extraordinary by any novice pirate, let alone one who had been at sea for only a handful of days.
"Fifty million berries..." Nami's voice was barely above a whisper, her eyes wide with a mixture of awe and terror. "This is... this is higher than most veteran pirates ever reach!"
Zoro's hand unconsciously moved to rest on his sword hilt as the implications sank in. "The World Government must consider you a serious threat to place such a high initial bounty."
"This is so cool!" Luffy's enthusiasm was completely unaffected by any concerns about the increased danger. If anything, the official recognition of his pirate status only made him happier.
"I can't wait to show this to everyone we meet! Finally, people will know I'm a real pirate!"
Akira studied the bounty with growing satisfaction, his analytical mind already calculating the political ramifications. A bounty of fifty million berries on their captain would certainly attract the attention of dangerous enemies, but it would also establish the crew's credibility with potential allies.
The Marines are working faster than I expected, he mused to himself. Captain Morgan's defeat and our alliance with Buggy must have sent shockwaves through their command structure.
It changes our timeline somewhat, but not necessarily for the worse. A higher profile means more opportunities as well as greater risks.
"Well, Luffy," he said aloud, his grin matching his captain's infectious excitement. "Congratulations on your first bounty. This is only the beginning of your legend."
As the morning sun climbed higher into the clear blue sky and their improved ship continued its supernatural progress toward Syrup Village, the Straw Hat Pirates found themselves entering a new phase of their adventure.
They were no longer anonymous rookies playing piracy in the peaceful waters of the East Blue. With Luffy's official bounty marking them as legitimate threats to the World Government's authority, their journey to the Grand Line had taken on far greater significance.
But none of this seemed to matter to their rubber-powered captain, who was still staring at his wanted poster with the pure joy of someone whose childhood dreams were finally coming true.
