Chapter 49: Chapter 49: The Going Merry's Maiden Voyage
"Wow!!!!"
The first rays of dawn painted the harbor a brilliant gold as Luffy's exuberant yell echoed across the peaceful waters of Syrup Village. Standing at the edge of the dock, his eyes turned into literal stars as he took in the magnificent sight before him.
Moored in the harbor was an immaculate three-masted sailing ship, her elegant design crowned by the most adorable sheep figurehead he'd ever seen. The ship gleamed in the morning light, every plank and sail telling of masterful craftsmanship and loving attention to detail.
Unable to contain his excitement, Luffy stretched his rubber arms wide and launched himself directly at the sheep's head. The collision caused him to bounce slightly before he settled into a comfortable position on the figurehead.
"Hehe! My pirate ship... finally, my very own pirate ship!!!"
Pure joy radiated from every inch of his being as he stretched out across the bow in a starfish position, breathing deeply to familiarize himself with the unique scent of his new home. This moment felt like the culmination of every dream he'd had since childhood.
Soon after, under Merry's careful guidance, the rest of the crew made their way down to the shore. The old butler's weathered face lit up with pride as he watched their reactions to his masterpiece.
"Yo, so this is our pirate ship?" Zoro shouted with obvious approval, setting down the massive pile of training equipment he'd been carrying with a resounding thud. "Looks unexpectedly solid!"
His scarred face showed genuine satisfaction as he studied the ship's construction. After years of chasing bounties in rickety fishing boats and commandeered dinghies, the sight of a purpose-built vessel designed for serious ocean travel filled him with anticipation.
Butler Merry stepped forward alongside Miss Kaya, both wearing expressions of nervous excitement as they prepared to formally present their gift to the Straw Hat Pirates.
"Although the design follows classical principles," Merry began with obvious pride, "this is a ship I have spent several years perfecting from concept to completion!"
His voice became more technical as he warmed to his subject. "The skeleton structure follows the conventions of light sailboats, with a central stern rig that uses a triangular sail configuration for optimal wind efficiency."
"Her name is..."
"Going Merry!!!"
"Merry, right?!" Luffy's head popped out of the figurehead with explosive enthusiasm, his grin stretching impossibly wide. "What a perfect name!"
He reached down and patted the sheep's wooden head, speaking directly to the ship as if it were already a living crew member. "Nice to meet you, Merry!"
Standing a bit apart from the others, Akira felt his breath catch as he took in the entire ship with his own eyes. A faint shimmer seemed to dance around the edges of the ship, something only he could perceive.
Memories flooded back with devastating clarity. That heartbreaking scene from the original timeline, when the Going Merry had burned like a funeral pyre against the endless ocean, saying her final goodbye to the crew who'd loved her. Even years later, the memory of that moment could bring tears to his eyes.
But not this time.
"Don't worry, Merry," he whispered, his voice carrying an oath that seemed to echo in his very soul. "This time I will never let you suffer the same fate again!!!"
The promise settled in his heart like an unbreakable vow. Even more, he found himself wondering about the Ship Spirit; could he somehow bring Merry into the Pokémon world to level up and learn protective moves? After all, Ghost-type Pokémon were created through circumstances remarkably similar to those of Ship Spirits...
The infectious joy of acquiring their new ship swept through the entire crew like wildfire. Everyone enthusiastically began loading their carefully prepared supplies aboard, from Zoro's training equipment to Nami's navigational instruments.
The morning sun climbed higher, bathing everything in a warm golden light. A light breeze carried the salty-sweet scent of ocean spray, perfect conditions for her maiden voyage.
Standing at the Going Merry's polished railing, Usopp found himself saying goodbye to the most important people in his life. Kaya stood on the dock with tears in her eyes, while the three boys who'd followed him on countless adventures struggled to keep a brave expression on their faces.
"Goodbye, Miss Kaya!!!" Usopp shouted, his voice cracking with emotion. "I promise I will become a brave warrior of the sea!"
He turned to his former crew members with mock severity. "And you three! While I'm away, you must protect Miss Kaya on my behalf! This is an order from your captain!"
"Rest assured, Captain Usopp!" the boys chanted in unison, standing at attention despite their obvious sadness.
The bittersweet atmosphere of farewell filled the harbor, but like all such moments, it would soon be carried away by the ocean winds to new adventures and distant horizons.
Luffy climbed up to the captain's position at the heart of the ship, his hands clasped tightly on his hips as battle-ready excitement blazed in his dark eyes.
"Wahahahaha... little guys!!!" His voice rang over the water like a battle cry. "Set sail! Set sail!!!"
"Oh!!!" the straw hats roared in perfect unison, their voices harmonizing into something greater than the sum of its parts.
The pirate flag, which Usopp had meticulously designed despite his self-deprecating claim to know everything but how to fight, unfurled proudly from the tallest mast. The sight of their Jolly Roger flapping in the breeze sent a thrill of accomplishment through every crew member.
Under Nami's expert command, the Going Merry began her graceful turn away from the harbor, her bow pointing toward the vast expanse of open ocean that beckoned with infinite possibilities.
Something about this particular departure felt different from any other voyage Akira had ever experienced. The very air seemed charged with destiny, as if the sea itself recognized the significance of this moment.
Luffy sat down on the sheep figurehead, letting the sea breeze ruffle his hair and flutter his open vest. From the moment he'd seen the Going Merry until now, his face had been in a state of pure bliss. His mouth simply refused to stop smiling.
Near the stern, Zoro claimed the fitness area as his domain and resumed his relentless training regimen. But his mind was elsewhere, pondering the advanced swordsmanship concepts Akira had introduced, the mysterious realm of cutting steel, and the deeper philosophical aspects of the blade.
His master Koshiro had mentioned such things during his childhood training, but at that time, his understanding had been too limited to grasp their significance. Now, after his battle with Kuro and the awakening of his Pokémon Energy, those half-remembered lessons were beginning to crystallize into something profound.
His brow furrowed in concentration as he carefully read through mental notes while his body went through familiar training patterns.
Not far from Zoro's position, Akira leaned against the ship's railing, azure light flickering in his eyes as he controlled gentle waves to increase their forward momentum. As the only crew member who had mastered the surfing technique, he was their designated propulsion system, a responsibility he'd accepted with good-natured resignation.
Fortunately, he'd become proficient enough to maintain their increased speed without conscious effort, freeing his mind for other pursuits. At the moment, he was carefully adding a new photograph to his growing collection of crew memorabilia.
The image showed the Straw Hat Pirates gathered around the Going Merry in celebration of their newest member. Each face glowed with unusual brightness, reflecting hopes and dreams for the adventures ahead. He'd specifically asked Butler Merry to take the photo before they left, a precious memento of this pivotal moment.
As for the rest of the crew, Usopp had retired to the cabin to study the weather rod blueprints Akira had provided, while Nami maintained her position in the crow's nest, telescope trained on the surrounding waters for any signs of danger or opportunity.
They'd been sailing for perhaps an hour when Nami's urgent voice broke the peaceful morning atmosphere.
"Something is happening! Everyone come here quickly!"
"Huh?"
Her cry immediately caught everyone's attention. Luffy paused his wind-watching, Zoro looked up from his exercises and Akira opened his eyes that had been closed in Ancient Power meditation. Even Usopp emerged from the cabin, design papers temporarily forgotten.
Standing high in the crow's nest with her telescope raised, Nami pointed to a certain part of the horizon. "Look there! There's definitely a ship approaching!"
She adjusted the telescope's focus, her expression growing more concerned. "It's flying pirate colors!!!"
"Oh?!" Luffy's interest was immediately piqued, and he stretched to his full height while squinting in the direction indicated.
In the pirate world, meeting fellow practitioners of maritime rebellion didn't inspire feelings of professional camaraderie. On the contrary, when two pirate crews met on the high seas, violence was often the inevitable result.
But before anyone could prepare for battle, Nami's voice rang out again with a note of recognition.
"Wait! I know that flag!" Her telescope shook slightly in her grip. "That's... that's the Black Cat Pirates' Jolly Roger!"
"Oh?" Akira moved to the bow, where a growing black speck on the horizon became more and more distinct.
"Interesting," he said, a predatory grin spreading across his features. "Kuro's already dead, but apparently his crew decided to keep their appointment anyway."
His eyes shone with tactical satisfaction as he continued. "Perfect timing. This will save Miss Kaya the expense of hiring bounty hunters to clean up the remains."
Observing Luffy's barely contained excitement, Akira gently patted the bow of the ship. "Hey, Luffy, you're not really getting excited about a bunch of small-time pirates, are you?"
"Ah?!" Luffy laughed and turned back to his vice captain, his rubber features animated with pure enthusiasm. "Of course I'm excited! This is our first sea battle!"
No matter what the situation, first experiences always carried special significance. The prospect of the Going Merry's baptism of combat filled him with anticipation.
But Akira shook his head in amused dismissal. "Forget it..."
"It would be embarrassing for the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates to get his hands dirty with mere lackeys!"
His smile turned calculating as he offered an alternative. "I think this time we should test the combat effectiveness of our new recruits instead."
"New recruits?" Zoro approached with a puzzled expression, his training temporarily abandoned. "You want Nami and Usopp to take care of them?"
Akira's grin widened in obvious anticipation. "You're forgetting someone, Zoro!"
"It should be Nami, Usopp..."
"And Merry!"
