OP in the Apocalypse: I Gained a Zombie System and Became the Top Dog

Chapter 5: The Power Portal

A thought crossed my mind as Devon returned to the room, looking a little less dishevelled over the situation. My eyes narrowed on him, and I bore a hole into the side of his head.

Where was he when I was locked up for three months? My eyes drifted off to the entrance to the safe room, tucked safely under the stairs. Not many houses in England have cellars or basements, and I was very lucky to find this house in this economy. I never told him about it, and I can't be sure that Rain told him either. Something inside tells me he would have helped me, but that also feels like wishful thinking. I sighed deeply and watched Devon take Rain's seat close to mine. Rain sat next to Molly, but there was a space between them.

I don't have time for this.

System?

'Yes.'

How does the inventory work? Can I have more than one item in the box, and if so, what is the limit?

'Good question. You have two separate inventories. One is for the materials to build from the item crafting section, which is limitless, and the second is in your survival portal, where you have twenty spaces available.'

Thanks.

I have a year to prepare for the apocalypse, but if I want to take over my mom's hotel and make it my base, I will need at least three months to make the renovations from the survival base tab. I will give myself three months to take over the gangs around the town. I pulled the Mob map up, my eyes brightening in delight, and my body perked up to shift the egg a little and catch Devon's attention.

I flipped the 2D map and stretched it to a 3D model, my body vibrating in excitement as hundreds of different-coloured dots blipped onto the screen. As the dots built up, it became glaringly clear that the map had the location of every single gang-owned business and house. I raised an eyebrow, and the grey dots appeared every now and then, congested close to the town centre behind my house.

Students who attend the university have a fascinating amount of funding. They specialise in a technology-based institution, but I went there and learned that their labs are funded to the nines. I narrowed my eyes and thought about the opportunities that were given to me. The other side of town, beyond the university students and closer to the more residential areas, is littered with thousands of industrial areas.

The black dots had started following the multicoloured and grey dots, and I had to think for a few seconds before I noticed that it must be for the general populace, or I guess we can call them civilians. The different gangs were concentrated on the entire left side of the town, and the right side was students and civilians; I nodded my head and swiftly calmed the fucked down and kept myself still. They were watching me with squinted eyes, and I didn't need to be thrown in the mental hospital before the apocalypse.

If they didn't survive, the institute undoubtedly went through them and the prisoners first. I need to be careful, but I also need to move fast and take everything. The closest gang is Ferona's, and I had to roll my eyes at the pink dots; they fit her weird personality.

Ironically, she deals in Molly, and a smirk stretched across my face as I shifted my gaze to her. She's a hardcore sniffer and owes her a shit ton of money. I shifted my gaze to my locked tablet and sighed loud enough for her to lift her head from her phone screen and stare at me.

"What's wrong?" she asked sweetly, earning an interesting glare from Devon.

"Ferona has been making things difficult for us," I said carefully.

Now Rain was staring at me with narrowed eyes.

"Since when?" he asked.

"Since now!" I hissed, shutting him the fuck up.

Devon flinched for a second before he stared at me with wide eyes. I imagine it feels like hell has frozen over for me to talk to Rain like this.

'Warning, Daria! A powerful awakened has been detected, and they are using their power.'

Fuck! Is it Rain? It better not be Molly. She doesn't need any more shit feeding her fat ego.

I pulled up the power portal, sucking in a deep breath as an outline of Devon appeared on the screen, showing his vitals, skills and ability.

Oh, fuck he's reading my mind. Shut him out, now!

'I can't do that.'

Oh my god, you are useless.

I took a deep breath and hopped out of the egg. It's not the system's fault he gives me enough; copying powers is one thing, but blocking their use on me is entirely different. I turned my head to Devon and jerked my head a little to direct him to follow me. I went straight upstairs and into my study, Devon not far behind. As the door shut, I rounded on him with my hunting knife, pressing it against his neck and holding him up the door.

"You're going to keep very quiet about what you heard in my head, right?" I flicked my eyes to the Power Portal and turned on his power.

Well, fuck. If you'd have told me I had a kink for deadly domineering women, I'd have laughed. I'm too hard right now to remember what she asked me.

I let out a strangled groan and put the knife on the desk next to the door. Flicking the lock on the study door, I stared at Devon with burning eyes.

Why is she looking at me like that? It's been so long that I'm not sure if I should make a move. She locked the door and put the knife down, surely?

I smirked and stepped up to smash my lips to his, running my fingers through his soft hair and moaning into his mouth as he responded and pressed his hard cock to my stomach. A furious heat coursed through my body, and I unbuttoned his suit trousers as his tongue slipped into my mouth, and his arms came around to pull me further into him.

My hands worked to pull his trousers down a little and grab his hard member, surprise flashing through my eyes as I felt my hand couldn't get around it. I don't think he would fit. A piece of memory flashed in my eyes, and I broke from Devon and stepped back in surprise. My body was shaking as an indescribable fear rolled over me, and a strange calm was left within me.

"We can't do this, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have led you on like that," I managed to get out.

I'd be burning red if I was light-skinned enough.

"It's not because of my loser nephew, is it? He doesn't deserve you, and I read that bitches mind. She's been fucking him," he looked incredibly exasperated, and I felt so guilty, but I couldn't explain it.

"I know about them, but we are not together anymore. Can you read memories?" I asked expectantly.

He has just awakened, so I highly doubt it, but it would make explaining a lot easier.

"I'm not sure," he answered cautiously.

I sat on the floor with my legs crossed and held out both of my hands, palms up, with my elbows resting against my knees. I beckoned him to join me, and he followed my position. The second his palms connected with mine, I watched him fall into my eyes and take me with him inside my brain.

Flashback – 1st life

We were standing in my work office, watching me and others watching the news; how surreal.

"What is this?" Devon asked in shock; his eyes glanced at a calendar on a random desk, and he sucked in a deep breath, "This can't be the future."

"It is, and it got so much worse for me."

"Got? Past tense?" Smart man.

"Yes, this is my second life."

His eyes flashed with an incredible amount of emotion as he realised I had died and been reborn. We watched my boss exited his office, pulling on his long jacket and holding his car keys. Recognition burned in Devon's eyes, and he stepped up to my boss and tried to grab his arm.

"Brother."

Well fuck, the world really is small.

"My boss is your brother. Honestly, that makes sense. Your brother is a sweetheart," I said, grabbing Devon's arm and pulling him back as his brother told us to go home.

The scene around us disappeared, and we were in my house watching me catch Molly and Rain. I rolled my eyes as I tried to high-voltage taser the prick in the face and missed by a millimetre. Molly smashed my reading lamp over my head, and I passed out on the floor with blood pouring into a pool to the left of me.

"What the fuck? Did they kill you?" Devon hissed, his eyes burning with anger.

"Not quite," I grumbled as they dragged my body down the stairs, and I watched my head bump off the steps as they dragged me down.

It was just humiliating, to say the least. When Rain opened the safe room door and picked me up over his shoulder, Devon's eyes went as wide as saucers, and he stepped inside. The scene changed again, and you could see I had been here for a while. I went in with straight hair, and now it was in coils a few inches longer, and my eyes had sunken into my sockets from the lack of food and water.

When I realised where we were, I closed my eyes and placed my hands over my ears. I didn't know how to control this; unfortunately, Deveon couldn't either. The door hissed open, and Rain slinked in, shutting the door behind him and pressing a button on his phone to turn off the camera.

"What? What the fuck?" Devon bellowed, and I turned to see him trying to pull Rain off of me, "I- I can't change it. Daria," his voice was panicked, and I could tell he never thought he would see something like that, especially from his nephew. The scene changed as my screams bounced around our brains.
