Chapter 37: Materials

"Alright, you'll be as good as new in three days at most."

After spending ten minutes, Genichi finished treating Namiichi Uchiha's wound.

"Thanks." Namiichi got out of bed and moved around a bit. Although his side was still a little sore, it no longer affected his movement.

Genichi reminded him, "Don't train or fight for the next few days."

"Don't worry. The enemy suffered heavy losses this time. They probably won't be back anytime soon," Namiichi nodded.

The two of them left the room and saw Sakumo and the others returning. The shadow clones were dispelled. Yamanaka En and Yamanaka Kei took the captive for interrogation, while Sakumo gathered the others in his room.

Everyone took their seats.

Sakumo said, "Everyone performed exceptionally well on this mission. We successfully thwarted the enemy's attack and annihilated all of them."

"However, although we may not face such an attack again in the short term, we still cannot let our guard down."

"I will communicate with the mine foreman and request reinforcements from the village."

Everyone nodded.

Sakumo added, "Rest for one hour, then we'll split into two groups and reset the traps."

"Understood!" they all replied in unison.

After they were dismissed, Genichi didn't go to rest. Instead, he followed Sakumo to the room where the captive was being interrogated. At this moment, En and Kei were working together, invading the Mist Ninja's mind to extract information. In this field, the Yamanaka clan had always been the best.

After a short wait, the two of them finished their probe.

"Captain Sakumo, we couldn't find any information on their employer. This guy probably doesn't know."

Sakumo nodded, not surprised. "Thank you for your hard work."

"Any other gains?"

Yamanaka En looked at Genichi and smiled. "The hand seal sequences for several Water Release ninjutsu, as well as the Ice Release secret techniques. But to get more information, our efforts alone are not enough. We'll need to send this guy back to the village."

Genichi's eyes lit up. "The Water Release jutsu will be useful to me. As for the Ice Release, one must first possess the Ice Release kekkei genkai for the secret techniques to be of any use." That Thousand Killings Water Soaring technique from before was quite good. Although just having the hand seal sequence didn't guarantee he could learn it, he had confidence in his talent for Water Release.

Sakumo said, "We'll keep him for now and send him back to the village later."

Yamanaka Kei said, "It's also possible the Mist ninja will come to rescue him."

Genichi added, "They might not be coming to rescue him. They might be coming to kill him."

Sakumo said, "Kei is right. But whether they come to rescue him or kill him, everyone must remain vigilant."

He turned his head to look at Genichi. "Genichi, can you seal his chakra?"

Genichi nodded. "I can." The Evil Sealing Method could be used to seal an enemy's chakra.

Sakumo nodded. "Then you will seal his chakra, Genichi. Afterward, we can leave him to be guarded by the mine's samurai." Their own manpower was limited; they couldn't spare a person just to watch a prisoner. They also didn't have that many anesthetics.

With the arrangements made, Sakumo and the other two left.

Genichi first applied the Evil Sealing Method to the captive, then returned to his own room, grabbed his backpack, and came back to the prisoner's room.

Opening the backpack, Genichi took out a small sealing scroll. He unsealed it, pressed his hand to it, and a host of medical instruments appeared. Syringes for drawing blood, needles for extracting bone marrow, vials for preserving blood and marrow... everything was there.

Ever since he had started thinking about conducting experiments and cell transplantation, Genichi had prepared these things. He carried them in his backpack on every mission, sealed within the scroll. Now, they were finally being put to use.

A ninja with the Ice Release kekkei genkai was worth collecting samples from.

First, he drew blood. Genichi drew the absolute maximum amount, just short of killing him. Next was the bone marrow; he drew it directly from the spine. Then, he sealed everything in the sealing scroll. Only there could they be preserved for a long time.

After taking care of everything, Genichi left with his backpack.

The next two days passed peacefully.

On the third day, two more squads arrived from Konoha. Genichi and his team were instantly much more relaxed. On this day, Genichi drew blood from the prisoner again. The more, the better. Once this guy was taken back to Konoha, he would no longer be available for him to experiment on.

Three more days passed, and another squad arrived from Konoha. All of them were wearing masks.

Anbu!

"It's Root!" En whispered in Genichi's ear.

Danzō's people...

Genichi's eyes narrowed slightly as he watched them take the prisoner away. Fortunately, he had drawn samples three times and had plenty of material. Otherwise, he would definitely be heartbroken, especially since the man was being taken by Danzō.

Mine!

That was mine!

Alas, Genichi could only watch as the Root members led the prisoner away.

"Don't worry, Lord Hokage won't forget your contribution," Sakumo said, patting Genichi's shoulder. "You can start thinking about what ninjutsu you want to choose now."

A smile appeared on Genichi's face. "I've already decided." The Water Severing Wave was his first choice. He needed a sharp, offensive water jutsu that could kill in a single blow.

Time flew by, and March passed. Before he knew it, half a month had passed on this mission.

On this day, Genichi and his team packed their things and left the mine. Yes, the mission was finally over.

On the third day, the team returned to Konoha.

"We're finally back!" En stretched his limbs and smiled. "How about we all go to the hot springs together?"

Genichi raised his hand. "Count me in."

"Sakumo-sensei, and Namiichi, Shinnosuke-senpai, why don't we all go together?"

Everyone looked at Sakumo.

Sakumo smiled. "Alright. Let's meet on the hot springs street in an hour."

Everyone smiled. "Yes, sir!"

Sakumo waved his hand. "Then, dismissed!"

Swish! Swish! Swish!

One by one, the figures vanished from their spots. Sakumo also immediately set off for the Hokage Tower. As the captain, he needed to hand over the mission report and also debrief the Hokage.

...

Back at home, Genichi first took a quick bath, then filled his stomach, before slowly making his way to the hot springs street.

But when he arrived, he found that Namiichi had already beaten him there.

After greeting him, Namiichi asked, "Genichi, the Chunin Exams are in about two months. Are you planning to participate?"

The Chunin Exams?

Genichi's eyebrows raised slightly. He thought for a moment and said, "If I can, of course I'm planning to."

"But what format will the Chunin Exams take?"

Namiichi said, "Usually, the entire squad participates. There's a written test, group battles, and individual battles."

Genichi nodded. "But you and En are already chunin. Do I have to form a temporary team with other people?"

"Of course not."

The one who spoke was not Namiichi, but En. He appeared beside Genichi, slung an arm around his shoulder, and smiled. "When the time comes, Namiichi and I will just participate with you."

Genichi asked, "Is... is that not unfair?"

En smiled. "Nope."

"Whether you get promoted or not depends mainly on your performance. It's not determined solely by wins and losses."

Genichi had a moment of realization. No wonder Kakashi was promoted to chunin at age seven, but then a few years later, he participated in the Chunin Exams again with Obito's team. If that's the case, Kakashi will probably participate this year too.
