Owned by a Man I Couldn't Trust

Chapter 9: Chapter - 9

Alex was glaring at Andrew, and he wasn't in a good mood because of the sudden news. Andrew lowered his head and thought he'd have to work overtime again very soon. Alex sighed and tried to divert his attention elsewhere, but nothing was working. Somehow, he was really pissed off thinking she agreed to marry him, even after the owner of Fraser Company gave her an offer that could change her life completely.

"Did she apply to any of our companies?"

"No, sir... but I contacted everywhere she applied and told them not to select her."

Alex nodded with furrowed eyebrows and clenched his jaw while playing with a pen in his right hand. Andrew got a notification on his phone and checked it immediately. He relaxed a little and looked at Alex to tell him the news he'd been waiting for over two weeks.

"Sir... Ms. Rainee Garcia applied to our company, but she doesn't know you're the new owner."

Alex smirked. Recently, he had bought shares of a company that was suffering losses, but he thought the company had potential, they just didn't know how to run a business. He saw a future for the company if he became the owner, so he bought all the shares from the previous owner, who happily sold them due to financial trouble.

Yesterday, Alex signed the papers, but the change hadn't been announced publicly yet. So, no one knew Alex Fraser was the new owner.

"Good... Let her go through the entire interview process. Don't let her suspect a thing, and make sure she doesn't find out about the current situation. I want her in this company, no matter what. Understood?"

"Yes, sir."

Alex sighed with a smirk, finally feeling a bit of calmness settle in his heart.

One week later

Rainee was returning home, deep in thought. She got on the bus and took a window seat since it was empty. She was getting married in two weeks and didn't have a job when Lucas proposed to her, but Lucas had said he was totally fine with that. It's not like she'd never get another job. But the job wasn't what was bothering her.

She had agreed to marry Lucas, whom she had dated for three years. Out of everyone, he was the perfect guy in Rainee's opinion. She wasn't the kind of girl blinded by love, she was very calculative. She had dated many guys before Lucas, and all those relationships had ended badly. Lucas was the only one who stayed with her for three years.

She had known him since childhood. They were best friends before getting into a relationship, and he treated her so well, gave her time, respect, privacy, love, and care. Her parents liked Lucas, and his parents liked Rainee. They were perfect for each other, right? She spent the whole night with him at his apartment.

But after waking up that morning, she started feeling something strange. It wasn't that she didn't want to marry him. She had been waiting for him to propose because everyone kept saying they were a match made in heaven. She also believed she couldn't find anyone better than Lucas. He had a stable job, he was serious about his work, ambitious, loving, and loyal. They had been together for three years.

But she wasn't as happy as she thought she would be. Lost in thought, trying to figure out what was bothering her, her phone rang. It was Lucas. She sighed before picking up with a forced smile.

"Hello..."

"Babe... where are you? I'm going to pick you up in an hour. Let's go and buy our wedding dress."

He sounded very excited, and she could hear loud honking in the background, indicating he was on his way to her place.

"I'm near the Washington dc .. I'll be home in 45 minutes."

"Oh, then get off at the next station. I'll pick you up from there."

She ended the call and sighed again. She frowned, thinking Lucas was rushing into the wedding. She had suggested planning everything slowly, but he said he wanted to marry her next month. He told her not to worry, he had been planning everything for a long time and had prepared it all. But she wasn't shameless, so she offered to split the expenses since she had savings too. She didn't want to burden him.

Everything was going beyond her imagination and plans, so she decided to go with the flow. She got off at the next station and saw Lucas's car. She opened the passenger door and sat inside.

"How was the interview?"

She smiled.

"Good... They selected me, and I signed the employment contract. I'll be joining from next week."

Lucas smiled brightly, hugged her happily, and kissed her on the lips.

"Congratulations... Now everything's getting back to normal. You don't need to worry."

She smiled and nodded indifferently. She wasn't happy with the job. The company was suffering losses, and the pay was very low. But it was enough to support her family. She had talked to Lucas and told him that even after their marriage, she would manage her family's finances until her brother got a job. Lucas had no problem with that, and that's what Rainee appreciated most, he supported her in everything. She never hesitated to speak to him about anything.

After reaching the wedding dress shop, Lucas chose his suit first. Rainee selected a few dresses and decided to try them on one by one. She was in the changing room when Lucas's voice came from outside.

"Rainee... I'm sorry, I need to go to the office. Something happened, and they want me immediately."

"It's okay... you go. I'll manage."

He knew she wouldn't mind. She wasn't the kind of girl who got upset if her fiancé didn't accompany her while shopping. She respected his work and privacy just as he respected hers. He left after apologizing again, and she told him politely that it was totally fine, she wasn't a child and could buy things on her own.

She tried the first dress, and honestly, she looked beautiful. She liked it and tried to zip it up, but her hands couldn't reach. Finally, she decided to ask the staff for help.

"Excuse me... is someone there? I need help."

She called out from inside the changing room, waiting while admiring the dress. She felt a hand on her back, and someone zipped up the dress. She didn't bother looking, thinking it must be a staff member, until a deep male voice made her heart stop.

"You look stunning in this."

He whispered in a hoarse voice. She looked up and widened her eyes in shock. It was Alex. They hadn't met in three weeks, and she thought he had gotten bored after firing her. She frowned, irritated.

"How dare you enter here without my permission? How did they even let you in?"

Alex smirked.

"This world runs on money and power, not ethics. By the way, I like this dress. You should buy it for your wedding."

She frowned deeper. How did he know about her wedding? And her location? Was he stalking her?

"Who told you about my wedding?"

"The whole company is talking about it. One of the most perfect employees is getting married, and everyone's jealous. Lucas invited everyone... except me. Tch... I'm hurt. He's my favourite employee, you know."

Rainee was standing in the small changing room with him, watching through the mirror, brows furrowed. She couldn't understand what he was thinking. What was he scheming this time? She chose to remain calm, hoping to figure it out.

"But you know what... I'm going to attend your wedding."

He smirked, looking at her through the mirror, and leaned near her left ear before whispering, almost brushing her earlobe with his lips.

"In fact... I'll be the main character on your wedding day."

She clenched her fist and turned her head away, trying to maintain some distance. Turning to face him with a confused expression, she asked seriously,

"What are you planning?"

Alex smiled in satisfaction. He loved her straightforward and fearless nature.

"How much do you trust him? I guess a lot, that's why you're planning to spend your life with him. But as a well-wisher, I want to warn you..."

He ended sarcastically, and she scoffed in disbelief.

"He's not what you think he is. Believe me, you don't know him at all. In fact, I'm puzzled by him too. But don't worry, we'll know everything very soon."

For a few seconds, she was speechless at his confidence and smug expression. She thought Alex might have found out something she didn't know. But then again, he had always wanted to break her relationship with Lucas, so it wouldn't be surprising if he made up a story to create misunderstandings. She had known Lucas for so long.

Her trust wasn't shallow. She would believe Lucas over Alex.

"Are you done? Get out before I shout for help."

Alex sighed sarcastically. He had expected that reaction. If she had doubted Lucas immediately, she wouldn't be Rainee. He gave her a dissatisfied look with a slight smirk.

"I gave you a chance. Since you refused it, I think I have no other option. Okay... let's meet at your wedding."
