Chapter 3: Spirits
Next day, Alexander went to the library, in search of his father. He knew he was the god of winter and the north wind, so it wasn't hard to find him in the books. The four wind gods were minor roles in myth, with the north wind being the most obscure but he found it, Boreas, the north wind. There were few myths about him, so he didn't learn much.
Over the next few months, he went through normal school life and during the night, due to the fact he didn't need to sleep, he trained. His skills were enhanced over these months and nothing too noteworthy happened until there were two new teachers. What was so amazing about that, you might ask? Well, both of them had letters above their heads. He had learned over this time that only monsters or divine beings(demigods, gods etc.) had letters above their heads. He learned that the hard way when, on a field trip to the aquarium, a cyclops tried to eat him. When he beat that monster, it, like the goblins disintegrated.
The names over their heads were even more worrying, for he recognized them Chiron and Alecto, the trainer of heroes and one of the kindly ones, the furies. What didn't make sense though was how Chiron was there. Chiron died in the myths.
Anyways, neither of them entered the school under their real names. Chiron introduced himself as the new latin teacher, Mr Brunner, whilst Alecto was the new pre algebra teacher, Mrs Dotts. Were they here for him? Observing them revealed nothing new, it was all question marks, they were definitely more powerful than himself.
Mr Brunner(Chiron in disguise) came wheeling into the classroom for their first class that day. Was that it? Chiron sacrificed his horse lower body and therefore the ability to walk for the gift of living? It seemed like an unfair trade off to Alexander. He couldn't imagine it, having the freedom of a horse and being confined in a wheelchair suddenly. His eyes travelled up the teacher. He had a full, if prestinely kept beard and short, brown hair. His eyes glimmered with ancient wisdom. An easy smile was dancing on his lips, "dear class, you have already seen me at the assembly this morning but I'll introduce myself again anyway. I am Mr Brunner, your new Latin teacher. I can expect great things from you, from all of you" he spoke with a tone that made you want to listen to him, they clung to every word. His eyes drifted over the students and lingered on two people, Alex, yes but also Percy. In fact, they lingered on Percy a lot longer than they did on Alexander. This made him think that maybe he was here for Percy, not Alexander. It made sense, Percy's father was one of the Olympians, whilst Alexander was the son of the north wind, a powerful god, yes but not on the same level as an Olympian.
Brunner tested them that first class(torture for the dyslexic duo) to get a feel for their level. They had only started learning Latin that year, so none of them did all too great, though the two did especially bad.
After the test, which Brunner flipped through, clicking his tongue every once in a while, Brunner nodded knowingly, "I have my work cut out for me, it seems", he didn't look disappointed, more amused, "but I'm sure I can clobber some Latin into you"
Later that day, after Latin, Art and the lunch break, it was time for pre algebra. Alexander dreaded to be taught by Alecto of all people(?). He didn't think she would be a particularly nice teacher or person. As they walked in, she already sat at her desk, glaring at them with the cold and calculated gaze of a predator sizing up its prey.
"Now dearies", she spoke with a sickly sweet voice, that despite all her best efforts couldn't hide the distain harbouring within her, "I will not tolerate any rule breaking or disruption of the class. If any of you break a rule, you will be punished"
She spoke as if she was already mapping out a punishment for each of the students there. She sniffed the air and immediately her eyes snapped to the trio sitting together, "I am sure some of you will not heed this warning but you have been warned"
Later that day, he walked past Dotts' office and saw the skull hologram in front of it. He didn't have any more classes that day and the next day was a Saturday, so he touched the door.
[Dungeon: Graveyard of the damned
Difficulty: Middle
Do you wish to enter?
Y/N]
Yes.
Within a flash, he found himself in a graveyard. The sky was dark, dotted with more stars than he had ever seen and a bright, full moon hung high. He pulled out one of the swords out of his inventory and waited for the quest and it came.
[Quest: exorcism
Vanquish all the spirits
Reward: 1 random attribute rank up; 1 random skill rank up; skill: summon skeleton]
Okay, better rewards than the goblin den but then again, that one had been easy difficulty, this one was middle.
Looking around, he saw multiple ghosts rise from their graves, translucent warriors decked out in all kinds of armor, some modern and some ancient but all held swords or axes, no modern weapons. He swung his sword at one and it was cut in half… it was easy, too easy. His fears were proven right when the ghost knit itself back together. Another slash at the spirit revealed that he couldn't harm them but they were definitely harming him, hitting him with their weapons. His ice also harmlessly passed through the spectres. How was he supposed to kill them if he could touch them? His eyes flickered to the quest, 'vanquish all the spirits', vanquish, not kill.
Think Alexander, think!
If their bodies weren't hurt by his sword, what else could he attack? There wasn't much around, only the cold air, the sky and the graves… the graves! He pulled out his crude warhammer and smashed one of the graves, the warrior it belonged to vanished. Perfect! He went around, smashing all the graves. It wasn't all that much harder than dealing with the goblins, in fact it was much easier than fighting the hobgoblin but the difficulty was determined not by how strong the monsters were or how easy it was to get rid of them but how easy it was to complete the related quest. Had he tried to fight them with brute force, he would've died rather quickly but it never was about fighting them.
[quest complete. Rewards granted]
Information flowed into him, he found his grip on the French language tightening and his mind become sharper.
