Chapter 80: Chapter 79: Sleepy Hoothoot and the Park’s Daily Surprises
Chapter 78 was a repeated chapter of chapter 77 so I skipped it

Pokémon Paradise had officially opened a day earlier. The morning rush of visitors brought excitement and a bit of drama, but the overall reception was positive. By noon, the guests had cleared out, leaving the staff to clean up. That afternoon, Ethan Grave left the park and returned to his usual round of inspections at the nearby lab.
His mind was still on the morning's incident. A parent had tried to file a claim after her child had tugged on a Squirtle's tail and been splashed with water, only to be confronted with clear surveillance footage.
Ethan had posted a short note about the incident on Weibo, naming the mother as a warning to anyone else contemplating disruptive behavior. Public reaction was strongly in favor of Pokémon Biotech, scorning the so-called Bear Child for bullying a defenseless Squirtle.
The whole fiasco had a silver lining: it reminded future visitors that the park's rules were no joke. The next time someone considered pulling a Pokémon's tail, they would remember how quickly and firmly Ethan had handled the matter.
---
At noon, several employees bustled around the lab's main hall, greeting Ethan as he arrived. He was eager to see Mew, the newly hatched Psychic-type Pokémon, as well as Ditto, who was always finding new ways to entertain or alarm everyone with his transformations.
Before he could look for them, however, he heard happy laughter and the high-pitched squeals of Pokémon coming from the corridor leading to the Breeder Room.
Hurrying toward the sound, Ethan rounded the corner to see a small group of colleagues gathered around two shapeshifting Pokémon.
One was Ditto, which retained its telltale little black eyes even after changing shape. The other was Mew, floating on soft pink wings of psychic energy, or sometimes morphing into a random shape. It hovered for a moment in the form of a Pichu, then flickered back to its feline self with a mischievous glint.
Not to be outdone, Ditto tried to mimic Mew's current form. For a moment, he managed to look almost like Mew - only with those unmistakable little black bean eyes. The result was so humorous that several of the staff burst out laughing.
Ditto noticed Ethan and decided to up the stakes by attempting a human transformation. His body stretched, limbs formed, and in a matter of seconds, he transformed into what appeared to be a half-finished copy of Ethan.
"What in the world..." Ethan blurted out. He took a step back, stunned by the sight of a distorted version of himself, bare-limbed and incomplete, with the same goofy black eyes. The staff exchanged wide-eyed glances, torn between amusement and mild horror.
A female researcher near the back gasped, "It's turning into a person?" The others couldn't believe their eyes. No one had expected Ditto to accomplish such a feat, nor had they realized that it had gathered enough reference points to approximate Ethan's physique.
"Stop that," Ethan said, stepping forward to stop Ditto from completing his bizarre impersonation. Still half-finished, Ditto's face twisted into an awkward grin before melting back into its pudding-like original shape. Then, with a delighted squeak, it oozed over and attached itself to Ethan's arm.
"Don't ever try to become me again," he scolded, gently prying Ditto loose. "I may have to lock you up if you keep scaring everyone." Several employees stifled laughter, though their eyes betrayed their amusement. Mew, who had reverted to his pink form, fluttered into Ethan's arms, blinking with curiosity.
Each day, Mew's psychic abilities grew. That morning, James Hunt mentioned that Mew would sometimes disappear from view, only to reappear in the same spot moments later. They suspected that he had developed a rudimentary invisibility ability that allowed him to disappear at will. Ethan was not surprised, given Mew's legendary reputation, but everyone else was still amazed.
Satisfied that Ditto and Mew were both happy, Ethan decided to check on the fresh batch of Pokémon eggs in the incubators. So far, the newly introduced species included a few more Hoothoot, a pair of Meowth, and a few other surprises. As Ethan walked past a corridor, he caught sight of James, who waved him over.
"Something's up," James said, leading him to a corner of the Breeder Room. "Take a look." Over by a feeding station, a young lab assistant named Lily looked completely exhausted, yawning repeatedly. She slumped against a table, her eyelids drooping as if she might nod off at any moment.
"I can't keep my eyes open," Lily mumbled, stifling another yawn. "I get plenty of sleep, but every time I feed the Hoothoot, I end up drowsy." She looked worriedly at James. "I'm afraid there's something physically wrong with me."
James gave her a sympathetic look. "Are you sure it's not a scheduling problem? You were fine last week."
Lily shook her head. "No, really. I even took a half hour nap at lunchtime. Still, I feel like I barely got any sleep."
Ethan stepped closer and noticed three young Hoothoot perched on a low pole, blinking at Lily with huge eyes. "Did you feed those three specifically?" he asked.
She nodded. "Yes, every day at this time they need a snack. That's when I get really sleepy."
Ethan laughed softly, understanding dawning. "They're practicing their hypnosis on you," he said, patting Lily on the shoulder. "Hoothoot has a natural ability called hypnosis, or something like it. If you look into their eyes for too long, you might feel sleepy. They're probably developing that ability by practicing on you without your knowledge."
"Hypnosis?" Lily said, her eyes widening in alarm. "They look so harmless."
He shrugged. "So does Mew, but it can disappear at will. Moves based on confusion or psychics often manifest themselves in more subtle ways. Hoothoot probably doesn't even realize it's hurting you. It's just following an instinct or testing a move."
James gave Lily a worried look. "Well, that explains a lot. You didn't do anything wrong, Lily, they used hypnosis on you unintentionally. Perhaps they were feeding you without direct eye contact?"
Lily exhaled in relief. "I thought I had some crazy health problem. Now it makes sense. I guess I'll wear sunglasses or something while I feed them. That might help me stay awake."
It was James' turn to lighten the mood with an idea. "Hoothoot's hypnosis could be an incredible boon to some people who can't sleep at night. Think of hospitals or private clinics. They might love a natural sleep therapy method."
Ethan clapped his hands. "Exactly. If we can train Hoothoot properly, they could help in certain therapeutic contexts. As soon as we pass the official tests, of course. The ability to hypnotize is an asset, not a liability, as long as it's used responsibly."
He watched as the little Hoothoots nodded in unison, as if eavesdropping. They could be quite a moneymaker, he thought, half joking. Psychic, or hypnotic, Pokémon would likely create a whole new field of medical research. Even Mew's Confusion was a game changer. Adding Hypnosis to the lineup could push Pokémon Biotech even further ahead of the curve.
Gathering his thoughts, Ethan turned to Lily. "In the meantime, just be careful around these three. If you start to feel sleepy, look away. They rely on eye contact for the hypnosis to work."
"Got it, Mr. Grave," Lily said, looking more at ease with the explanation. "Thank you. I'll avoid staring at them while I feed them."
With that matter settled, Ethan moved on to check on the eggs in the next room. He admired how quickly his staff adapted to unexpected abilities in the Pokémon under their care. The lab environment buzzed with excitement and occasional challenges, but everyone shared the same underlying drive: to push the boundaries of genetic design in ways no one else had dared.
On the other side of the building, Pichu and Squirtle from the previous generation squeaked and splashed, demanding the attention of the staff.
A few whined restlessly, eager for dinner or a play session. As Ethan walked by, he couldn't help but smile at the harmony of these creatures. Even the mischievous ones, like Ditto, or the newly revealed psychic wonders, like Mew and Hoothoot, added to the sense of magic that filled the halls of Pokémon Biotech.
He paused at a window, gazing at the horizon where Pokémon Paradise stood. It was still early in its opening to the public, but he could already feel the collision of human curiosity and the wild potential of Pokémon. So far, the synergy had produced more amazement than problems. The occasional run-in with a rule-breaker, like the mother who demanded compensation, only served to reinforce the park's strict guidelines.
In the days ahead, Ethan would continue to refine these creatures, unveiling new species as they emerged from the incubators.
Each born Pokémon might possess unseen powers, perhaps hypnosis or advanced transformations, bridging the gap between fantasy and reality. His face lit up with quiet determination as he placed a hand on the next incubator, its display panel showing stable vital signs for the eggs inside.
The future, he thought, belonged to the union of these extraordinary Pokémon and the people who dared to embrace them. With consistent oversight, firm boundaries, and a bit of whimsy, Ethan planned to forge a bright path forward, one where abilities like Hypnosis and Confusion were not a threat, but a promise of endless possibilities.
