Chapter 108: Chapter 108: The Battle Against Surge
Rhydon gave a slight hop, its legs lifting off the ground—and then, boom!
As it landed heavily once more, the entire battlefield trembled.
Ampharos visibly winced in pain. Ground-type moves were super effective against it.
Its ongoing Charge move was also interrupted and failed to activate.
"Nice reaction," Surge praised inwardly.
But how will you handle this? he thought with interest. "Ampharos, use Focus Blast!"
Silas's expression changed drastically. That was ridiculous! Focus Blast had a base power of 120 and was a Fighting-type move—super effective against Rhydon!
But seriously, what kind of level 31 Ampharos could learn Focus Blast? Was this a joke? Where was the fairness?
Ampharos's yellow body began to glow with a white light. The red orb on its forehead emitted a particularly intense radiance.
Its flat, paddle-shaped arms slowly raised to the center of its white belly, forming a platinum-colored sphere.
Before Ampharos even completed its motions, Silas quickly gave instructions to Rhydon. He wasn't going to assume Surge was bluffing.
"Use your tail to launch Rock Slide! Then smash it apart with a Double Arm Hammer!"
Sure enough, Ampharos was really charging up a Focus Blast, which made Silas cringe internally.
Rhydon rotated its body slightly, sweeping its tail to gather rocks and launch a Rock Slide at Ampharos. At the same time, white energy gathered around both of its arms.
After being struck by the Rock Slide, Ampharos's face twisted in greater pain, but it gritted its teeth and launched the fully-charged Focus Blast anyway.
The platinum-colored energy sphere flew swiftly toward Rhydon, colliding with its twin arm hammers.
For a moment, the two forces were at a standstill then the energy sphere exploded violently, sending up clouds of dust and smoke.
"Rhydon, keep going..."
Just as Silas was about to command Rhydon still hidden in the smoke to continue its attack,Surge called out.
"That's enough. You've passed this Gym Challenge."
Surge as aware of how badly Ampharos was doing. Judging from what he'd just seen, Rhydon was clearly injured but still capable of fighting.
A single-arm Hammer Arm already had a base power of 100. With both arms and a slight level advantage, Surge estimated that Rhydon still had enough stamina to take another Focus Blast.
But that wasn't necessary.
The purpose of a Gym Battle was to evaluate the capability of Trainers and Silas had more than proven himself.
There was no need for Ampharos, already at its limit, to endure more damage.
Silas immediately halted his commands. Before long, the dust began to settle.
In the middle of the battlefield stood Rhydon. Its arms were raised in front of it in a defensive posture. Its body was covered in wounds, and it was breathing heavily.
Its gaze remained fixed on Ampharos, who was nearly exhausted.
"It's over now, Rhydon. The battle's finished."
Upon hearing its Trainer's voice, Rhydon finally let down its guard a little and exhaled in relief.
Both Trainers simultaneously recalled their Pokémon.
"You did well, Ampharos."
"Thanks, Rhydon."
The always-serious face of Surge finally relaxed into a smile though it looked a little stiff.
"Great command decisions. Quick reactions too. But you were a bit nervous."
Silas chuckled awkwardly. This was his first time battling a true Elite Four-level Trainer face to face—it was only natural to be a little tense.
Otherwise, against an Ampharos that had just reached the Advance tier, Rhydon wouldn't have struggled so much.
He hadn't reacted fast enough. He should've commanded Rhydon to go for Rock Polish and close the distance with melee attacks. That way, Ampharos wouldn't have had the chance to use so many charge-up moves.
Without those, it would've been limited to its standard Electric-type techniques—completely ineffective against Rhydon.
Silas reflected on this, silently criticizing himself. Still a bit too green.
Surge, the Gym Leader, walked up to him and pulled out an orange badge from his jacket pocket the Thunder Badge.
"Here, the Thunder Badge is yours now! Keep it up, young man!"
Silas instinctively accepted the badge, just about to thank him but Surge had already left the battlefield.
At that moment, the referee who had long since faded into the background stepped up and said, "Trainer Silas Alaric, just keep the badge safe. We'll take care of entering the corresponding data into the system.
Battles against Gym Leaders follow a different procedure than usual."
Silas quickly expressed his thanks and then left the Vermillion Gym, heading back to the Pokémon Center.
After handing over Rhydon's Ultra Ball to Nurse Joy for healing, Silas sat down nearby and began to think.
To be honest, he hadn't expected to battle the actual Gym Leader in this challenge, and the whole thing felt rather anticlimactic.
Even though it could be said that the match had been decided, something still felt off to him. And the so-called guidance or advice he was told he'd receive never came it was strange.
Meanwhile, in the Vermillion Gym's office, the blonde-haired Surge, wearing a jacket, rubbed his temples with a headache.
"Crap… I left too quickly and forgot to give him any advice."
I'm so out of practice. Looks like I really need to spend more time around the gym again.
"That Rhydon must be newly Caught the coordination wasn't great, but the command was quite impressive," he mused.
Silas, of course, had no idea what Surge was thinking at that moment. Although it felt strange, getting the badge was enough to make him happy.
It was just a shame that he left in such a rush he forgot to strike his signature victory pose. He felt a little regret about that.
As for doing that signature pose in the middle of a busy Pokémon Center lobby, surrounded by onlookers well, he'd probably be trending on the forums the next day. Instant fame, immediate social death.
"Beep~"
Suddenly, his wristwatch rang with an incoming call. Silas glanced at the caller ID and answered, a bit puzzled.
"Hello, this is Silas Alaric speaking."
A voice very similar to Brock's came through. "Good afternoon, Silas. Long time no see."
It was Jiro—Brock's second younger brother. He was 14 years old now, but he was already regularly helping out alongside Brock.Compared to Brock, he was even more mature and steady.
Back when Silas had stayed at the Pewter Gym, he often chatted with Jiro. But ever since Silas had left, Jiro hadn't contacted him once. So for him to suddenly reach out like this, Silas had no idea what was going on.
"Long time no see. What's up, Jiro?"
"Still as straightforward as ever, huh, Silas?" Jiro chuckled lightly. "I've got something big to tell you—well, not that big, really."
Silas didn't reply. He was used to Jiro's odd way of speaking and knew he'd continue after a pause.
Sure enough, after a short breath, Jiro continued, "Silas, for the foreseeable future, if you need anything or need help with something, you'll have to contact me instead."
"What happened to Brock?" Silas asked instinctively.
"Dad sent him to the Diglett Tunnels to train with Grandpa. Said it was to help him gain some insight. I don't really know the details," Jiro responded from the other end.
