Chapter 109: Chapter 109: Fishing Competition
"Alright, honestly, something like this could've just been a message. It's not a big deal or anything," Silas said casually.
"I still needed to give you a proper call, Silas," Jiro replied with a smile. "Anyway, that's all I had to say. You probably haven't eaten yet, right? Go ahead and grab some food. Contact me if anything comes up."
"Ok, ok," Silas readily agreed before hanging up the phone.
To be honest, he sometimes felt that Jiro was even more reliable than Brock. He didn't know if it was just his imagination.
In the backyard of Pewter Gym, Jiro turned to his father, Flint. "It's settled, Father."
Flint's face remained dark, but he gave a slight nod. "Yeah, that Silas Alaric is a decent Trainer—good talent, smart too. Spend more time with him these days."
"Mhm." Jiro nodded and tried to comfort his visibly irritated father. "It's nothing serious. Big bro didn't do anything outrageous. Calm down a bit."
"Don't mention that damn kid to me! It's all that Mika's fault for spoiling him!" Flint. grumbled and cursed.
"Didn't we send him to Grandpa already? Grandpa will straighten him out," Jiro replied, clearly not too worried. After all, their dad had once been straightened out by Grandpa the same way.
"Nope. I need to have a serious talk with your mom," Flint. said, still fuming as he stormed off.
Jiro opened his mouth, hesitating. He wanted to say, "Mom just came back into the house, she didn't go out," but in the end, he let it go.
No way he could just stand by and watch his old man get beat up.
Especially since his mom specialized in Water-type Pokémon.
Jiro shrugged, let out a sigh, and headed back toward the gym.
With his older brother sent to Grandpa's place, his workload had suddenly increased a lot. Not only did he have to handle all the gym affairs that Brock used to manage, he also had to look after his younger siblings. On top of that, he still had his studies. Life was rough.
"Master Jiro, Nurse Joy from the Pokémon Center asked if you could bring a few different Pokémon over. The new generation universal energy-level detection equipment just arrived, and she wants you to verify its precision one more time," a staff member called out as he walked briskly toward Jiro. Upon seeing him, his face lit up and he began explaining from a distance.
Jiro returned the man's greeting with a gentle smile and a nod before turning to enter the breeding room to begin selecting the Pokémon he'd need.
For people like them members of the Pokémon League's internal system, especially those in gym positions their precision-grade energy-level detection equipment was top-tier.
Of course, the downside was the cost—those devices were incredibly expensive.
In comparison, the universal models at Pokémon Centers were made for mass use and greater efficiency, so the costs had to be controlled, meaning the precision inevitably suffered.
Since this had to do with official gym challenges, even though the Joy family must've calibrated the machines beforehand, the local gym still had to run confirmations. It was part of the process.
Even if it was tedious.
Jiro let out a silent sigh. Life wasn't easy. Big bro, please come back soon.
Far away in Vermilion City, Silas had just finished his phone call when he was informed that his Rhydon had fully recovered.
As usual, he thanked Nurse Joy and was just about to leave when he noticed a blue flyer nearby.
"Oh, that!" Nurse Joy noticed Silas picking up the flyer and gave him an introduction.
"That's for an event being held this afternoon at the Reia Fishing Park!"
"Vermilion City is a harbor town, surrounded by rivers and the ocean, so the fishing industry is extremely well developed.
We have six different fishing parks here where Trainers can go fishing, and every two months, one of the parks hosts a special event.
Ray Fishing Park is the largest among them, and the prize for this competition is surprisingly generous—a pearl produced when a Clamperl evolves.
If I weren't so busy with work, I'd want to join myself," she said with a laugh.
As Silas listened to Nurse Joy's explanation and read through the flyer, he found himself tempted.
A pearl produced when Clamperl evolves was an incredibly rare item.
Clamperl, the Bivalve Pokémon, is pink and surrounded by a blue protective shell-like structure. Although it looks like a shell, its composition is different.
Clamperl has two evolutionary paths: if it holds a Deep Sea Tooth, it evolves into Huntail; if it holds a Deep Sea Scale, it evolves into Gorebyss.
This was discovered by Professor Brich during his research on the Iroha Islands. While investigating the phenomenon of Clamperl only evolving into specific forms on certain islands, he found traces of Deep Sea Tooth and Deep Sea Scale elements within the underwater cave currents of those islands.
He then conducted verification experiments, confirming the results. This added to the category of Pokémon with multiple evolution paths influenced by environment or items.
As for the pearls produced during Clamperl's evolution, it can only evolve once in its lifetime, and thus can only create one single, beautiful pearl in its entire life. This pearl has the effect of enhancing mental strength and amplifying Psychic powers.
Its value is dozens of times greater than that of the pearls from Shellder.
If not for the fact that the Deep Sea Tooth and Deep Sea Scale are only effective on Clamperl, their market value would be several times higher.
Still, Silas figured he probably wouldn't be able to win the championship.
After all, there were plenty of seasoned fishing veterans who fished for both fun and profession. As a young man, how could he possibly beat them?
"Besides," Nurse Joy added with a smile, "every trainer who participates, even if they don't place well, will still receive a Shellder pearl as a participation prize from the Lake Ray Fishing Grounds."
Nurse Joy beamed at Silas. What a cute young man—he wore his every thought on his face.
"Thanks, Nurse Joy."
Silas snapped back to reality and gave Nurse Joy a smile before walking out of the lobby.
"Hey, isn't that handsome guy named Silas Alaric? He's really good-looking! No wonder that Erika from Viridian keeps talking about him in the group chat."
"Totally! And his smile is so sweet—young people are the best!"
"Ugh, are you getting lovesick or what? Did you fall for him?"
"Oh, stop it! I did not…"
As they watched Silas's figure disappear into the distance, a group of Nurse Joys giggled and teased each other playfully.
"Alright, alright, back to work, everyone!"
An older Nurse Joy finally spoke up, her voice still carrying a hint of amusement. After all, the Joy family structure basically guaranteed that they were all relatives, so their conversations were nothing like a typical hierarchical workplace.
Silas made his way to the cafeteria to grab a meal while continuing to study the fishing competition.
The event was scheduled for today at 2 p.m., and participants could simply enter to register.
The organizers would release a massive number of marked Magikarp into a large lake. Each participant would be allowed to fish up as many as they could, but they'd only receive three special Poké Balls upon registration to catch them.
In other words, your final score would be based on the total weight of the three Magikarp you managed to catch and successfully store in those Poké Balls.
The contestant with the highest combined weight would be crowned the winner.
The competition would last a total of three hours.
"Actually… this sounds pretty fun," Silas thought. "Might be worth going just to experience it."
