Pokemon: Bounty Hunter

Chapter 110: Chapter 110: A Grand Scene

"Wow, so many people!"

Silas couldn't help but exclaim as he looked at the massive crowd in front of him.

After all, in the Pokémon world, with its vast lands and sparse population, it was rare to see such large gatherings except during major events or at popular tourist spots.

Even the last time at Cape White's scenic viewpoint didn't have this many people.

Let alone a fishing spot like this in a somewhat suburban area.

Although Silas had done some research on the Pokémon forums before coming here for the competition, the grand turnout still took him by surprise.

No wonder the fishing grounds were offering such great rewards for the champion it was basically free advertising.

At the entrance of the fishing site hung a large banner that read.

"Ray Fishing Ground Fishing Tournament" in bold characters.

Looking around, all he could see were people dressed like anglers.

Familiar faces gathered in groups of two or three, chatting and laughing while holding fishing rods and tackle boxes.

Of course, there were also many like Silas—empty-handed Trainers who had just come to participate for the experience.

And who knows, maybe winning the championship could mean a nice windfall, right?

"Hey, Silas! Good afternoon!"

A voice greeted him from behind.

Silas turned around and responded with a smile, "Good afternoon, Night."

Standing behind him was a blonde-haired boy who looked a little rough around the edges.

Glancing at his shoulder, Silas asked, "Where's your Pikachu?"

"It's training with big brother Lt. Surge's Raichu," the boy replied.

Night full name Night Maple was the grandson of the previous Gym Leader of Vermilion Gym. Silas had met him aboard the S.S. Anne and found him to be someone with a strong sense of justice.

"Speaking of which, big brother Surge mentioned you before," Night said with a grin. "He only found out later that you were the champion of the S.S. Anne tournament. He's been singing your praises ever since."

The two of them chatted and joked around for a while.

As for why Night was here, the reason was simple one of the major shareholders behind the Ray Fishing Grounds was the Vermilion Gym. This time, Night was serving as one of the organizers of the fishing tournament.

Just earlier this afternoon, Silas had planned to contact the heir of the Vermilion Gym, so the two of them arranged to meet up.

"Come on, I'll take you inside to handle registration and all that."

Night led Silas into the fishing grounds.

There was still some time before the tournament began, so most of the participants were waiting outside.

After all, most of them were fishing enthusiasts who had already signed up days ago through other means.

Only a few Trainers like Silas, who were temporarily staying in the area, came to register on-site.

As they walked through the gate, Silas gazed at the shimmering, expansive lake in front of him and couldn't help but let out a sigh of admiration.

Paired with the distant forest and mountains, the view was simply stunning.

"Big, isn't it? Beautiful, right?" Night said proudly as he introduced the place. "This lake in the Ray Fishing Grounds is called Poseidon Lake. It connects directly to the ocean, and it's said that long ago, someone spotted the Sea Guardian Lugia here—hence the name.

This is also the largest lake near Vermilion City.

Thanks to the surrounding forest and mountain range, the scenery is really something.

Not only is it a fishing spot, but it's also one of the major tourist attractions in Vermilion!"

They arrived at a group of tents set up by the lakeside. Ignoring the ones marked for registration, Night led Silas into a yellow tent, where a single man was sitting at a desk with a computer.

"Uncle Ray, help my friend here get registered."

The man, addressed as Uncle Ray, chuckled as he took Silas's Trainer ID and began entering his information.

While that was going on, Night continued explaining.

"This time, we've divided the lake into four smaller fishing zones for the tournament, numbered from one to four. Each zone has twenty-four designated fishing spots.

As for the Magikarp stocked in the lake—their number and weight are completely randomized. No one knows the exact details, so there really isn't any good or bad zone.

But I can get Uncle Ray to give you one of the better fishing spots and let you head over there in advance."

"There's a difference between fishing spots?" Silas asked, sounding confused.

Night looked at him with equal confusion. "Didn't you go fishing almost every afternoon on the S.S. Anne? Even though sea fishing is different, you should at least know that much."

"I was just fishing for fun. I never really studied it," Silas shrugged.

Night rolled his eyes. "Then your patience is something else. I couldn't sit still like that if I was only doing it for fun."

Then he began to explain the concept of "fishing spots" to Silas, who gradually started to understand.

Due to various factors, groups of Magikarp tend to gather in specific areas within the lake, while the rest of the lake has them scattered sparsely.

Experienced anglers can identify which areas are likely to have schools of Magikarp and fish there to get better results.

So even though each zone has twenty-four spots, some are definitely better than others—this was one of the hidden challenges in winning the tournament

Of course, that doesn't mean Magikarp in the better spots are necessarily heavier, but statistically speaking, the chances of catching a big one are definitely higher than in other areas.

There was once even a record of someone catching a huge Magikarp at a wild, non-designated fishing spot—but occurrences like that are a once-in-a-decade kind of thing.

"Uncle Ray was once the six-time consecutive champion of our Celadon City Fishing Grounds. He's a master-class angler, really impressive!"

Night was introducing the seemingly unremarkable uncle who had just stood before them.

The uncle smiled modestly, handed Silas back his ID card, and then passed him three specialized Poké Balls along with a fishing rod temporarily loaned by the competition officials for participants to use.

After a brief exchange, Night and Silas left the tent.

The two discussed Pokémon training for a bit, but Night glanced at the time and excused himself to attend to something else.

Silas then headed alone to the No. 3 Lake, the venue he had been assigned.

As the start of the competition drew near, there were already a few scattered participants pacing around the area. From what he had just learned, Silas understood they were selecting their fishing spots.

He looked around and noticed that all 24 fishing spots around the area were clearly marked with flags, each bearing a number.

"Spot No. 18… ah, there it is."

Silas casually strolled over to the spot Uncle Ray had recommended. A few middle-aged anglers were already sitting there.

Seeing Silas walking over with the brand-new beginner's fishing rod provided by the officials, the others more or less figured out what kind of competitor he was.

One of them smiled and asked, "You don't look like someone who's into fishing, kid. Just here to soak up the atmosphere?"

"Ah, yeah. But come on, Uncle, look at it—No. 18! It's got 'prosperity' written all over it! This spot's gotta be a lucky one!"

Silas boldly bragged, full of confidence.

The anglers couldn't help but chuckle. This kid was really something pure dumb luck, maybe.

"Yeah, this spot is actually not bad. Well, do your best, then!"

They all offered Silas warm and friendly encouragement.
