Chapter 31: Waiting near the bridge

Five days later, at the end of the week, Kay stood in the training field with Eevee and Growlithe, proudly smiling.

He couldn't help but feel impressed by how much progress his Pokemons had made in such a short time. Their hard work and dedication had really paid off.

Eevee was the first to catch Kay's attention. It had managed to bring two of its moves; Double Team and Bite to Expert mastery.

Watching Eevee use these moves now was incredible. Its Double Team had become so smooth and quick that keeping track of the real Eevee among the copies became very hard. Bite, on the other hand, had become faster and more powerful.

But that wasn't all. Eevee had also made unexpected progress with other moves. Kay had planned for Eevee to focus on improving Toxic to Proficient mastery, which it successfully did.

What surprised Kay the most, however, was that Eevee had also improved Swift to Proficient mastery.

The stars it released were now faster, and more accurate, making the move much more effective in battle.

And then there was Eevee's speed. After days of intense training, its movements had become significantly faster.

Kay felt proud knowing that this improvement would make Eevee an even stronger competitor in battles to come.

Growlithe had also made huge strides. Its Ember attack had reached Expert mastery, with the small bursts of fire now burning hotter and more intensely than ever.

Double Kick had also improved to Expert mastery, with each kick becoming faster and more precise.

Kay remembered how much effort Growlithe had put into its Double Kick training, and seeing the results now was incredibly rewarding.

Not only that, but Growlithe also improved Sunny Day and Double Team to proficient mastery.

Sunny Day was now much more reliable, with Growlithe able to brighten the sky and enhance its fire-type moves in just seconds.

Its Double Team, though not as advanced as Eevee's, was still impressive, creating convincing copies that could confuse even strong opponents.

The time for the meeting to head to the tournament had finally arrived. Kay stood in his small room, packing the last of his belongings into his bag.

He made sure to include everything he thought he might need because it was clear he would be away from home for several days, or even more.

His Pokemons would need to be ready for anything, so he double-checked that his Pokeballs, potions, and snacks for Eevee and Growlithe were safely packed.

Before leaving, Kay glanced at Growlithe, who stood eagerly by his side. "Time to get going," he said, holding up the Pokeball and calling Growlithe back inside with a flash of light.

"Stay there until we arrive, buddy. We don't need any unneeded attention, also you'll be our winning card, so you should keep hiding."

With his bag slung over his shoulder, Kay headed to the living room, where his family was waiting to see him off.

He had already told them he would travel for a few days, but he had not told them about the tournament.

His mother looked worried, but she still smiled and hugged him tightly. "Take care of yourself, Kay. Don't forget to eat properly,"

"I will, Mom," Kay replied, stepping back. "I'll only be gone for a few days. There's something important I need to do in another city, but I'll be back soon."

After saying goodbye, Kay stepped out of the house with Eevee trotting at his heels.

The two began walking toward the city's borders, where Kay was supposed to meet the tournament organizers.

The sun was high in the sky, casting warm light over the streets as they passed by familiar buildings and shops.

For the first few minutes, the walk was quiet, with Eevee occasionally glancing up at Kay as if to check that they were on the right path.

After about half an hour of walking, something large began to appear in the distance.

It was a massive bridge stretching far across a wide river, its towering structure visible even from afar.

Kay stopped for a moment to look at this bridge. It was his destination. It marked the meeting point where the tournament organizers would meet him.

He couldn't help but wonder what awaited him in this tournament; new challenges, powerful trainers, and maybe new and strong Pokemons.

After walking for a few more minutes, Kay and Eevee finally arrived at the massive bridge. It stretched across the wide river, towering over the landscape with its impressive structure.

As Kay arrived at the spot near the bridge, he couldn't help but feel a little uneasy. He didn't know exactly when he was supposed to meet the tournament organizers.

Earlier in the day, he had tried to call the phone number provided to him, but the number wasn't working anymore. That had left him with a nagging doubt.

The only thing that gave him the confidence to come here was the card he had received from Lucian.

Lucian was a very strong trainer. Kay didn't believe someone like Lucian would lie or trick him, so he chose to trust the card and show up at the bridge as planned.

When Kay arrived at the meeting spot, he pulled out his phone one more time and tried calling the number again.

He waited for the phone to ring, but just like before, there was no response. The number seemed completely disconnected.

Kay sighed and lowered his phone. 'Well, I guess I'll just have to wait and see,'.

He looked around, hoping to spot someone else nearby, but the area was mostly empty except for the occasional car passing by.

'If nobody shows up by the end of the day, I'll just go back home.' He had already come up with an excuse to tell his family: he would simply say that he decided to postpone his trip for another day.

With nothing else to do, Kay sat down near the bridge and pulled out his Pokedex. Since he had time to kill, he decided to check on his Pokemons' stats.

He started with Eevee, who sat next to him, its ears twitching as it watched Kay open the Pokedex.

"Let's see how you're doing, Eevee," Kay said with a smile as the screen displayed Eevee's stats:

Eevee:

Potential: Orange

Stage: Superior Steel

Moveset:

Tackle (Proficient)

Helping Hand (Elite)

Wish (Expert)

Bite (Expert)

Sand Attack (Proficient)

Dig (Expert)

Quick Attack (Expert)

Double Team (Expert)

Swift (Proficient)

Toxic (Proficient)

Kay grinned as he read through the stats. "You're looking stronger now, Eevee. All that training is definitely paying off."

"Eevwee..." Eevee let out a happy bark, wagging its tail proudly.

Next, Kay decided to check Growlithe's stats. He didn't need to call Growlithe out of its Pokeball, as the Pokedex allowed him to view all his Pokemons' stats directly. With a few taps, the screen displayed Growlithe's information:

Growlithe:

Potential: Red

Stage: Inferior Steel

Moveset:

Ember (Expert)

Double Kick (Expert)

Helping Hand (Novice)

Sunny Day (Proficient)

Double Team (Proficient)

Kay kept waiting by the bridge, his patience being tested as the hours dragged on. By now, he had been standing there for nearly ten hours, and the bright daylight had faded into the dark of night.

The silence around the bridge was unsettling, broken only by the occasional chirp of crickets and the distant sound of flowing water from the river below.

Time seemed to crawl for Kay. He had nothing to do but wait, and as the hours passed, doubt began creeping into his mind.

'Maybe I was wrong to come here,'. The number he had tried calling earlier was still disconnected, and there was no sign of anyone arriving.

It was almost midnight now, and Kay had started to give up hope. He glanced at his watch, seeing the minutes tick closer to 12:00.

"If nobody shows up by midnight, I'm leaving," he muttered to himself, trying to convince himself that heading home was the smart choice.

At 11:58, Kay began gathering his belongings, preparing to leave. He slung his bag over his shoulder and called Eevee to his side.

Just as he was about to take his first step back home, something unexpected happened.
