While Eddie and Sabrina were discussing how to divide their opponents, their enemies materialized before them from the thinning fog.
When the Muk spotted its Trainer, it quickly slithered toward a figure barely visible in the mist.
"This Muk doesn't appear to be under mind control," Eddie observed solemnly. "Otherwise, it wouldn't move with such purpose." Unlike the Trainers and Pokémon downstairs who seemed to be acting on pure instinct, this Muk clearly retained its consciousness and appeared to be following commands.
As the thick fog gradually dissipated, it revealed a man in a ninja outfit standing beside a boy wearing a woolen shirt. An Muk and a Charmeleon positioned themselves in front of the pair, hissing menacingly at Eddie and Sabrina.
Name: Charmeleon
Level: 40 (Peak)
Name: Muk
Level: 65 (Quasi-Elite)
"Impressive," Eddie thought. "That Muk is even stronger than Sabrina's Alakazam. I suppose that's fitting for someone destined to join the Elite Four." Eddie wasn't particularly concerned about the Level 40 Charmeleon that hadn't evolved yet, but he was impressed by the powerful Muk—though he found it unsurprising.
The man in the ninja outfit was the third executive of Team Rocket whom Eddie had encountered at Mt. Moon just days ago—the Gym Leader of Fuchsia City and future Elite four member of the Johto region, Koga.
Sabrina had mentioned a Gym Leader but hadn't specified who their enemy was. Unfortunately for her, Eddie already knew everything she was trying to conceal.
"Koga and Gary are clearly under mind control, but the Muk isn't," Eddie pondered. "The Charmeleon has cloudy eyes and appears controlled as well. Why wouldn't the uncontrolled Muk try to rescue its Trainer instead of attacking us?"
Setting aside Koga's identity, Eddie was most perplexed by the Muk's behavior. Not fully understanding it, he voiced his confusion aloud to gauge Sabrina's perspective.
"...It's common knowledge that Pokémon only obey their Trainer's commands," Sabrina replied. "Even the Kangaskhan you're commanding now would only listen to you if its Trainer ordered it to."
Sabrina recognized something was amiss in this situation. By now, she was using Psychic to levitate in the air, arms crossed over her chest, constantly analyzing their predicament.
Though Sabrina's pose appeared cool and somewhat alluring, it actually indicated her serious concentration.
"Muk is exceptionally powerful," she reasoned after a moment. "It seems the mastermind cannot directly control it. Instead, they're probably giving orders to the controlled Trainer, who then commands Muk—essentially controlling the Pokémon indirectly."
"...Controlling a Trainer to control their Pokémon? I see. That explains it," Eddie nodded, finally understanding what their opponent was experimenting with. They were likely researching methods to control other people's Pokémon.
However, if that was truly their research, Eddie wasn't particularly concerned that the mastermind would attempt it personally. After all, conducting such an experiment firsthand served little purpose.
"The ninja Trainer is extremely powerful, and this Gary you mentioned isn't weak either," Sabrina stated coldly. "With their combined strength, the method we used before will likely be ineffective."
Her meaning was clear—Eddie and Sabrina couldn't defeat their opponents without going all-out, but doing so would seriously injure their mind-controlled enemies. How could they rescue them without being ruthless?
"But there must be a prerequisite for this to work!" Eddie exclaimed. "For the mastermind to give orders so easily, they must be able to observe this place. If we eliminate their means of surveillance..."
Eddie and Sabrina locked eyes, and the determination in Eddie's gaze startled Sabrina, causing her to blush inexplicably. Though confused by her reaction, she had no time to dwell on it now.
She understood Eddie's reasoning completely. In simple terms, if they destroyed the enemy's surveillance method and the mastermind lost the ability to control Gary and Koga, their Pokémon would become directionless and much less threatening.
"Go, Greninja! Blizzard!"
"Alakazam, Psychic!"
Alakazam summoned a psychic hurricane while Greninja unleashed a fierce Blizzard. The combined powers created a violent snowstorm.
Eddie and Sabrina's strategy was obvious—first, disperse the thick fog to discover how the enemy was observing them.
However, the controlled Trainers wouldn't simply stand by during this attempt—or rather, the puppetmaster behind the scenes wouldn't allow them to.
Charmeleon attacked Greninja with Flamethrower, while Muk launched another Acid attack at Alakazam.
Greninja and Alakazam, still in the process of executing their moves, couldn't dodge immediately.
But Eddie and Sabrina had anticipated the counterattack and already had Poké Balls in hand. Meanwhile, Kangaskhan continued protecting them from surprise attacks, waiting for the real enemy to appear before engaging.
"Charizard, Flamethrower!"
"Mr. Mime, Light Screen!"
Charizard versus Charmeleon was like Charmeleon versus Charmander—the pre-evolution stood virtually no chance. Charmeleon was instantly overwhelmed, its flames completely overpowered.
But Charizard's attack didn't stop there. As if pursuing total victory, flames hotter than a standard Flamethrower surged toward Charmeleon.
Gary—or rather, the mastermind controlling him—wasn't an amateur. He directed Gary to draw another Poké Ball, releasing a mind-controlled Golduck.
Facing the incoming inferno, Golduck deployed its own Light Screen, barely withstanding the attack.
Sabrina's side handled things more straightforwardly. Mr. Mime's offensive capabilities weren't exceptional, but its defensive abilities surpassed Alakazam's.
With a wave of her hand, an invisible Light Screen materialized, easily deflecting Muk's attack.
Mr. Mime didn't stop there, casting defensive moves like Reflect, Barrier, and Safeguard in quick succession. Though this appeared to consume considerable energy, once Mr. Mime completed its defensive setup, even Koga's Pokémon couldn't breach such protection in the short term.
By now, Eddie and Sabrina's joint attack had been completed, their coordination surprisingly seamless.
