The terrifying Blizzard suddenly surged throughout the tower, making the entire Pokémon Tower howl like a phantom. Support pillars creaked ominously, and cracks began forming in the surrounding walls.
The thick fog that had permeated the fourth floor was finally dispersed by the combined power of Alakazam's Psychic and Greninja's Blizzard!
With the obscuring mist temporarily cleared, Eddie and Sabrina quickly searched for the enemy's surveillance method. They immediately spotted two Pokémon that had been hiding since the battle began.
A Gastly lurked behind Gary and Koga.
A Golbat hung upside-down from the ceiling, clutching a small mirror in its mouth.
"So it's Gastly creating this mist—is that how they're controlling everyone?" Eddie wondered.
"And that Golbat must be their surveillance method. We should eliminate it first, then deal with Gastly."
Eddie quickly analyzed the roles of these two Pokémon. In the original timeline, Gastly had also controlled people, but now Team Magma operatives had replaced the original culprits. The mechanism of Gastly's mind control remained largely unchanged.
As for the Golbat, the mirror in its mouth appeared capable of transmitting Golbat's Supersonic waves to display images elsewhere. Though Eddie didn't understand the exact principle, he'd seen similar devices in Pokémon Chronicles.
Name: Golbat
Level: 60 (Quasi-Elite)
Name: Gastly
Level: 80 (Champion)
"Damn," Eddie cursed silently as he assessed the newly revealed Pokémon's strength. "As expected, that Gastly is their main force, and Golbat probably belongs to Koga."
However, this situation wasn't entirely unexpected and remained within his ability to handle.
"Kangaskhan! Keep Gastly occupied," Eddie commanded. "Miss Sofia, hold off those two Trainers. I'll handle Golbat."
Eddie immediately mobilized their combat resources and launched his attack, targeting the airborne Golbat.
Though Charizard was only Level 40, seemingly outmatched against the Level 60 Golbat, the latter's primary role wasn't combat. Otherwise, it wouldn't have been hiding on the ceiling, avoiding direct engagement.
Its purpose was surveillance. If Golbat abandoned that role to attack, the enemy would lose their view of the battlefield and couldn't command Koga and Gary. This meant Golbat couldn't risk attacking.
Because if it did, Eddie and Sabrina would seize that opportunity to defeat the Pokémon left without their Trainer's guidance.
Still, Charizard might struggle to defeat Golbat due to the significant level gap. While Golbat couldn't attack, it certainly wouldn't sit still and allow itself to be hit.
So...
"Go, Charizard! Show us your true power!"
Eddie had several trump cards at his disposal. However, dealing with a Golbat that could only dodge didn't require power of Viridian —Mega Evolution would suffice.
He quickly donned special gloves embedded with evolution stones.
Charizard began radiating evolutionary light, roaring skyward. Though the transformation was brilliantly dazzling, Charizard understood the urgency of their situation and completed its evolution rapidly.
Name: Mega Charizard Y
Type: Fire/Flying
Ability: Drought (When this Pokémon appears, the weather becomes sunny and remains so for a while)
Despite being inside the tower, Mega Charizard Y's ability affected the area beyond the building's walls.
Outside, where heavy rain had been pouring, the thunderstorm briefly dissipated as intense sunlight broke through the clouds. Warm rays penetrated the Pokémon Tower, illuminating the entire floor.
This radiance enhanced Mega Charizard Y's Fire-type moves considerably.
This was precisely why Eddie had chosen the Y evolution. While the X form was powerful, it excelled in melee combat—not ideal for pursuing the nimble Golbat. Charizard needed enhanced Special Attack to effectively target the flying Pokémon.
"Mega Charizard Y, Fire Blast!"
The Y evolution dramatically boosted Charizard's Special Attack. Combined with the sunlight, its Fire-type moves gained tremendous power, and its attack range expanded significantly.
Mega Charizard Y pursued Golbat relentlessly through the air. Though Golbat was extremely fast, Charizard's attacks had sufficient range that each blast grazed its target, inflicting considerable damage.
At this rate, Mega Charizard Y would soon overcome Golbat.
"Mega Evolution? I didn't expect him to possess both a Key Stone and a Mega Stone," Sabrina thought, surprised. "Regardless of whether he's playing dumb or not, someone powerful must be backing him. Ordinary trainers can't acquire such rare items."
Sabrina had recognized Eddie's intentions when he produced the glove, but she was nonetheless impressed by his resources.
She glanced at Kangaskhan, already locked in combat with Gastly, growing more convinced that Eddie had powerful connections.
If Eddie could have read Sabrina's thoughts, he would have laughed uproariously. There was nobody "behind" him—he'd earned everything through his own battles and hard work!
As for the Mega Stone and Key Stone, they were mission rewards he'd obtained across different game regions.
The enemy was clearly growing desperate. Champion-level Gastly was now engaged with Kangaskhan, which possessed comparable Champion-level strength.
While Eddie had to focus on directing Charizard against Golbat, Kangaskhan fought Gastly based on its own battle experience.
Eddie wasn't concerned about Kangaskhan falling to Gastly—the two were old acquaintances, familiar with each other's tactics. Even without Eddie's commands, Kangaskhan could hold its own against Gastly for a considerable time.
How did Eddie know they were old acquaintances? He could tell from their taunting exchanges during combat:
"Gaaast!!!" (You again? Why is it always you, Kangaskhan? Why do you always get in my way?!)
"GAROO!!!" (Hahaha, you pathetic Gastly! You've never been a match for me!)
Thanks to his translation abilities, Eddie could understand their Pokémon trash-talk perfectly. He was somewhat amused to discover that Pokémon could insult each other just like humans.
With Gastly occupied, the enemy had no choice but to command Koga and Gary to attack.
Gary's Golduck and Charmeleon launched Hydro Pump and Fire Spin at Sabrina.
Koga released his Arbok, and both Poison-types immediately used the devastating Gunk Shot to target Eddie.
The enemy's strategy had shifted—they were now prioritizing Eddie. If they could eliminate him, Golbat's predicament would resolve itself.
"Hmph! Compared to me, a Gym Leader Trainer, they're targeting that guy instead? Are they underestimating me?" Sabrina felt inexplicably angry, unsure if the enemy was dismissing her abilities or had other motives.
She ignored Gary's Pokémon attacks completely—their combined assault couldn't even breach the defensive barriers she'd established earlier. Why bother responding?
Using Teleport, Sabrina transported herself, Alakazam, and Mr. Mime behind Eddie. He was focused upward on attacking Golbat, leaving his rear vulnerable.
But Sabrina's arrival ensured that Alakazam's and Mr. Mime's Light Screen blocked the incoming attacks.
Such defensive measures weren't flawless, however, so Sabrina prepared to unleash her full strength.
"I don't care if he's pretending to be stupid or genuinely clueless," she thought. "Right now, we're allies. If you want to attack him, you'll have to get through me first!"
With a casual wave of her hand, an earring materialized in her palm. The small accessory contained an embedded Mega Stone, which Sabrina quickly attached to her ear.
"Alakazam, let's show these fools who look down on us our true power once again!"
