Chapter 83: Chapter 83:The Terrifying Strength of Dragonite! The Truth Behind the Mission to Protect Jirachi

Ohtaka looked at Natsume's Dragonite and smiled, "Do you know why I am a country-level gym leader?"

"While your Dragonite is indeed strong."

"There are others with near-legendary Pokémon, not just you."

"The Sakura gym in Hokkaido also has a Goodra that is regarded as near-legendary, but it is only a regional-level gym leader."

Natsume slowly floated upward.

He hovered above Ohtaka, looking down at him standing beside Corviknight, calmly asking, "So, what do you want to say?"

Ohtaka slowly looked up, and as he stared at Natsume floating above, he suddenly felt less inclined to speak.

Didn't this group of intelligence gatherers mention that Natsume was a psychic type?

Ohtaka silently mounted his Corviknight.

"I want to say that if you want to have a match, I will oblige you."

"Come forth, Talonflame!"

"Talonflame!"

Talonflame flapped its wings, flames flickering on its wings.

"Corviknight, let's go!"

Corviknight carried Ohtaka as they flew down toward the battle arena below the gym.

Name: Talonflame

Type: Fire/Flying

Level: lv64

Ability: Flame Body

Individual Values: HP 30, Attack 30, Defense 31, Special Attack 31, Special Defense 30, Speed 31

Moves: Flamethrower, Aerial Ace, Flare Blitz, Air Cutter, Roost

Inherited Moves: Flame Charge

Potential: Elite

Absorbed Treasure: Sharp Beak

Natsume reviewed the data on this Talonflame.

This Talonflame appeared to be Ohtaka's ace Pokémon.

Its strength and talent were impressive, and it had absorbed a treasure.

Natsume said to Dragonite beside him, "Pay attention this time; this opponent is quite strong."

"Dragonite."

Dragonite waved its fist.

Dragonite promised it would teach them a lesson!

"Natsume, you can fly now."

Jirachi, watching Natsume who was floating slowly toward the battle arena beside Dragonite, looked surprised.

Natsume smiled and said, "Yeah, I just learned this new ability."

"But I'm not quite proficient yet."

Jirachi floated in front of Natsume, flying backward as it moved forward.

"You don't use psychic powers like that."

"I'll teach you~"

As Jirachi spoke, it gently pressed its head against Natsume's forehead.

A strange energy flowed from Jirachi's body into Natsume.

Jirachi used help on you.

Your understanding of psychic powers has increased.

You have learned new moves: Teleport, Psyshock, Psycho Cut, Reflect, Light Screen.

Natsume felt the energy inside him and looked at Jirachi in astonishment.

Jirachi grinned and said, "Give it a try~"

Natsume's body flickered and instantly vanished into thin air.

Natsume used Teleport and reappeared above the farm's battle arena.

"Now I really feel like a humanoid Pokémon."

Natsume thought to himself.

"Dragonite~"

Dragonite accelerated and flew to Natsume's side.

Rotom flew to the center of the battle arena.

Rotom looked at Ohtaka, who was ready for battle, and asked, "So, are the rules for this battle 1v1 or 2v2?"

Ohtaka glanced at Natsume's Rotom and calmly replied, "Ten minutes."

"If my Talonflame can't take down your Dragonite in ten minutes, I will leave here directly."

"If you can withstand my Talonflame for ten minutes, that means your strength is at least at the country level."

Natsume chuckled upon hearing Ohtaka's words, "You really are the Flying-type gym leader; you speak confidently."

Ohtaka stood atop Corviknight, extending both of his hands, "This is the sky, my domain."

"Talonflame, go!"

"Talonflame!"

A burst of flames shot from Talonflame's mouth, heading straight for Dragonite.

Talonflame's Flamethrower roared like a writhing flame dragon, burning through the night sky!

Around them, it became as bright as daylight!

"Dragonite~"

Dragonite flapped its wings and swiftly dodged the Flamethrower attack.

"Aerial Ace!"

"Dragon Claw!"

Both Ohtaka and Natsume's commands were very concise.

"Talonflame!"

Talonflame suddenly accelerated and charged toward Dragonite.

Talonflame's speed was astonishing, instantly reaching Dragonite.

Dragonite flapped its wings, condensing Dragon-type energy in its claws.

Light blue gas rose from Dragonite's sharp claws.

Just as Talonflame was about to collide with Dragonite, Dragonite's claws suddenly unleashed a powerful gust of wind.

The massive Dragon Claw slammed down on Talonflame's wings like a mountain.

Boom~ Bang!

Accompanied by a loud explosion, terrifying shockwaves pushed outward.

The energy protective barrier around the gym rose instantly, blocking the ensuing waves of impact.

At the same time, Talonflame, which had been charging at Dragonite, streaked through the air like a burning meteor, leaving a long red trail behind.

With a resounding crash, Talonflame hit the ground of the battle arena.

The ground shook with a booming impact!

It seemed as if the earth had been torn apart by Talonflame's fall, as a massive crack spread outward.

A deep pit formed where Talonflame landed!

Dust, thick smoke, and flying debris filled the air.

The scent in the atmosphere was pungent.

Ohtaka, with his arms still outstretched, watched the scene in front of him, and his expression suddenly froze.

Dragonite: "?"

Dragonite looked back at Natsume with a confused expression.

Where was the formidable opponent he had expected?

Natsume was also a bit stunned.

Was that it?

As Natsume regained his focus, he thought it actually made sense.

In numerical terms, Dragonite's physical attack reached a staggering 134 points.

Aerial Ace is a physical move in the Flying type, but Talonflame only has an attack value of 81 points.

Dragonite's physical attack was maxed out, while Talonflame's was only 30 points.

Combined with the treasure Quick Claw, Dragonite had gained an even faster speed.

The treasure Dragon Fang amplified the power of Dragon-type moves.

The treasure Muscle Band further enhanced Dragonite's strength.

The reason near-legendary Pokémon are called near-legendary is that, at the same level, their strength greatly surpasses that of ordinary Pokémon.

Added to the strength from the treasure,

This was how Dragonite unleashed a Dragon Claw that slammed down with the force of a mountain!

As the smoke slowly dissipated,

Talonflame flapped its wings, seemingly trying to fly again.

However, one of its wings was hanging awkwardly.

Its wing had been broken.

Natsume looked at Ohtaka.

Ohtaka slightly parted his lips, seemingly wanting to say something, but no sound came out.

Being a country-level Flying-type gym leader, Ohtaka had certainly worked his way up.

His strength was certainly not weak.

But at this moment, his ace had been swatted down to the dirt by Natsume's Dragonite with a single strike from above.

"Wow, champion."

Ohtaka's voice was a bit hoarse.

"Your Dragonite actually possesses champion-level strength."

To knock down his Talonflame with a single claw, Ohtaka could only think of a champion-level Pokémon.

Natsume looked at Ohtaka and asked, "Do you want to continue the fight?"

"No need, I've lost."

"Talonflame, use Roost."

On the ground, Talonflame used Roost to heal itself.

If the battle were still ongoing, Dragonite would not allow Talonflame to recover there.

Once Talonflame's condition improved, Ohtaka picked up his Poké Ball and recalled his Talonflame.

Battle Diary: You have defeated the Flying-type gym leader.

You have gained treasure: Sharp Beak; you have gained Flying Type Gems; you have received Exp. Candy 3 that provides a lot of experience.

Please defeat more type gym leaders.

"Actually, I'm quite curious,"

Natsume said to the somewhat dazed Ohtaka, "Even if you believe my strength is lacking, what gives you the confidence to think Jirachi needs your protection?"

Ohtaka replied, looking at Natsume, "Jirachi awakens once every thousand years; its energy has given life to the land, and it is currently in a weakened state."

"Of course it needs our protection."

"If I had known you possessed champion-level strength, I probably wouldn't have come all this way."

"Weakened state?"

Natsume had a strange expression.

"Dragonite!?"

Dragonite looked increasingly displeased with Ohtaka.

So, you mean to say I can't even compare to a weakened Jirachi?

Every day, Dragonite raced against Jirachi in speed.

But Dragonite had never caught up to Jirachi.

Ohtaka did not notice Dragonite's irritated expression.

He continued, "Moreover, I can tell you that many people are coveting Jirachi's powers."

"There are country-level forces wanting Jirachi to alter their land."

"There are ambitious individuals eager to use Jirachi to gain eternal life."

"And some wish to possess powers rivaling those of gods through Jirachi."

"Since I've found you here, those people will definitely track you down as well."

Ohtaka looked at Natsume and said, "If Jirachi continues to stay with you, your farm will undoubtedly face trouble ahead."

Natsume, listening to Ohtaka's words, countered with a question.

"Those who covet Jirachi's powers are not just present in our time."

"But tell me, why has Jirachi returned safely to the earth every time over the past few millennia?"

Ohtaka frowned slightly upon hearing this.

The existence of Jirachi has been recorded throughout the ages, including those that experienced the Millennial Comet.

Ohtaka had initially thought that Jirachi's ability to safely fall into sleep every time was because each era had individuals like himself working hard for Jirachi.

Rulers, for the stability of society, would also help Jirachi safely pass through those seven days.

But after careful consideration, was it truly just because of that?

If Jirachi had indeed lost its strength, then how could the changes in Natsume's farm be explained?

Ohtaka now believed that all the changes in the farm originated from Jirachi's life energy.

A possibility caused Ohtaka's pupils to widen.

"Jirachi hasn't lost its power?!!!"

Wasn't it recorded that Jirachi's powers were all given to Aoi District?

If it hadn't lost its power, why would Jirachi choose its own guardian?

Ohtaka suddenly felt a bit confused.

"Natsume, let's not worry about him~"

"He's too boring."

Jirachi tugged at Natsume's arm, saying, "Let's go see my ice sculptures~"

"I worked really hard on them."

Natsume smiled at Jirachi and said, "Alright."

"Dragonite, I'll accompany Jirachi to the ice cellar for a bit. You all can handle things here."

After saying this, Natsume disappeared with Jirachi.

"Wait for me, Rotom~"

Rotom shouted, "I want to see the ice sculptures too."

Rotom flew over to follow them.

Ice sculptures?

What ice sculptures?

Ohtaka wondered.

Can Jirachi really make ice sculptures?

Come on, this is a Pokémon that is said to awaken only once every thousand years in legends!

"Sandslash."

Sandslash suddenly walked up to Ohtaka.

Sandslash patted Ohtaka's hand.

"Sandslash?"

Ohtaka looked at Sandslash in confusion.

"Sandslash!"

Sandslash handed Ohtaka a hoe.

"???"

Ohtaka was momentarily stunned.

What does this mean?

"Dragonite."

Dragonite looked at Ohtaka and shook its fist.

"Dragonite says that if you don't listen to Sandslash, it will hit you."

Kirlia kindly translated Dragonite's meaning.

"Dragonite~"

Dragonite nodded.

The corners of Ohtaka's mouth twitched slightly.

If a champion-level Pokémon really wanted to hit him, he had no way to defend himself.

"Sandslash."

Sandslash indicated for Ohtaka to follow.

Reluctantly, Ohtaka picked up the hoe and followed Sandslash into the land.

Ohtaka took out his phone, hesitated for a moment, and made a phone call.

"Yamada Roto, it's me."

"Ohtaka, what's up?"

A somewhat aged voice came from the phone.

Ohtaka said, "I found Jirachi."

Yamada Roto responded, "Oh, that's great."

"But there was a little incident."

Ohtaka simply explained his encounter with Natsume.

And the conversation he had with Natsume.

"Yamada Roto, what do you think about this matter?"

"Hehe."

Yamada Roto chuckled, "Ohtaka, do you not understand why Jirachi chose to stay by Natsume's side?"

Ohtaka replied bluntly, "I really don't understand."

"Do you know Mew?"

"Mew?"

Mew is considered in academic circles to be the ancestor of all Pokémon, born alongside the world.

Ohtaka certainly knew about this well-known Pokémon in the Pokémon world.

Yamada Roto slowly said, "So do you know the kinds of occasions on which it has been sighted?"

"This..."

Ohtaka shook his head, "How would I know something like that?"

"There was a child who claimed to see Mew at their birthday party."

"Someone claimed to have discovered Mew at a festival celebration."

"And another person said they witnessed a human suddenly transform into a Pokémon and fly into the sky while watching a trainer tournament."

Ohtaka instinctively responded, "It sounds like they were all in very lively places."

"That's right."

Yamada Roto chuckled, "So, those who study Mew believe that Mew is like a street performer, loving to go to lively places."

"Pokémon, whether it's a Caterpie by the roadside or a mythical Pokémon like Mew that possesses immense energy, are essentially simple creatures."

"They express their feelings very directly."

"Have you considered that Jirachi chooses to stay with that youth named Natsume because he truly enjoys being with Jirachi?"

"And that he doesn't have a single thought of wanting to exploit Jirachi?"

"Because Natsume genuinely just likes Jirachi."

"So that's why Jirachi is willing to stay on this farm?"

Ohtaka stood frozen, listening to Yamada Roto's words.

Yamada Roto continued, "Jirachi is never looking for a guardian."

"Jirachi is simply searching for its companion."

Ohtaka suddenly understood Yamada Roto's meaning.

"I see, so do we still need to continue the task of protecting Jirachi?"

Yamada Roto replied patiently, "Of course we need to continue."

"When Jirachi isn't angry, it is just an ordinary Pokémon."

"But if Jirachi gets angry, they will understand why Jirachi is called a god!"

Ohtaka realized what he truly needed to do.

Ohtaka redialed the rangers' base: "Notify everyone to gather in Morimachi."

"Coordinate with Natsume, the gym leader, to protect Jirachi."

Is the task to protect Jirachi?

No!

The real mission for Ohtaka was to ensure that those who dared to target Jirachi would set aside their greed.

Under the moonlight,

"Sandslash."

Sandslash urged Ohtaka.

Ohtaka put down his phone, saying helplessly, "Hey, I am still the Flying-type gym leader, you know."

"Sandslash."

Sandslash pointed at the ground.

"Yes, yes," Ohtaka replied.
