Pokemon: My Wife is Meowscarada

Chapter 36: 36. Gardevoir

The wind wailed softly as Ryn glided westward. Below, the land stretched in scarred ruins, whispering of a lost era. "Let's see what this one's hiding as I get closer to that ruined temple," he said.

"Mewtwo, any giant Pokémon nearby?" he asked, glancing at her. Her sleek form hovered beside him, eyes closed. A faint violet glow pulsed as her Psychic powers swept the landscape. She shook her head, her telepathic voice brushing his mind. * None for now *

They descended toward the temple, a crumbling monolith of moss-draped stone entwined with gnarled roots. Moss clung to the walls, casting a ghostly green glow.

Ryn's boots crunched on the mossy floor as he approached the entrance. An invisible barrier shimmered before him, rippling like liquid light, as he tried to touch the walls. His heart raced, a blend of frustration and curiosity. "Mewtwo, can you break it?" he asked, stepping back.

Mewtwo raised a hand, her psychic energy flaring in violet sparks. * I could try * she thought. Before she could prepare a Shadow Ball to strike, a voice, soft, melodic, yet heavy with exhaustion, echoed in their minds. "* Are you… human? *"

Ryn froze, his hand dropping to the Poké Balls at his belt. "Who's there?" he called, his voice sharp with unease. Mewtwo's eyes narrowed, glowing faintly as she scanned for threats.

The barrier flickered, and a narrow opening appeared, just wide enough to pass through. The voice spoke again, softer now. "* Come inside. Let us… talk *"

Ryn exchanged a cautious glance with Mewtwo, who also looked confused. For week he hadn't found a way to leave or determine his location, and he had many doubts. * Maybe my questions could finally be answered * he thought, and decided to check it out.

Deep inside the ruined temple, they found a shiny blue Gardevoir. Her elegant form radiated quiet sorrow. Her red eyes gleamed with ancient wisdom, but her posture slumped, as if bowed by an unseen burden.

"* You are not of this world right. *" her telepathic voice whispered gently.

"How do you know? What is this place? How do I get out of here?" Ryn asked, a flurry of questions.

Gardevoir's gaze softened, but her voice trembled with the weight of a forgotten past. "* This is the land of Xytherion, a land lost to time. Long ago, it was a haven of peace, where Pokémon roamed free, kind, carefree spirits loved by all who shared this land. But then, a meteorite fell from beyond our world *"

Her words sparked vivid images in Ryn and Mewtwo's minds.

She continued, "* Its dark power corrupted any who neared it, corrupting them completely. Pokémon and humans fought together to seal that cursed stone, but the corruption had already spread across the land, corrupting many Pokémon. Even after death, their spirits remained corrupted *"

Ryn's eyes widened with understanding. He'd seen how wild and ruthless the Pokémon here were, and now he knew why. Fear flickered in his gaze as he asked, "Will my Pokémon get corrupted?"

Gardevoir nodded, her expression grave. "* Only if you stay too long. I sense something about you and your Pokémon, perhaps a resistance to corruption, but I'm unsure what it is. You and your Pokémon may be fine for a time *"

Ryn let out a sigh of relief, his shoulders easing slightly.

He pressed on, urgency in his voice. "How can I leave? Can I help you? And what are these ruins? Do they all contain the meteorite?"

Gardevoir sighed, her voice heavy with sorrow as she answered each question. "* Each temple holds either a powerful corrupted Pokémon or the corrupted spirit of a dead Pokémon, too strong to destroy, sealed to prevent their escape *"

"* This one, where we stand, holds the corrupted spirits of humans. My human partner, Zar, and I were tasked by our tribes to guard it. He failed to become a Guardian like me and passed away. No temple now has a human Guardian, as all who attempted the role failed *" Her voice wavered, laced with grief for her lost partner, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears.

Gardevoir's voice grew heavier, her sorrow deepening. "* Some, like the giant Tyranitar, a mother guarding the corrupted spirits of her dead child and clan members, are sealed within these temples *"

"* Others, like the great Torterra, an ancient creature, bear a different burden. He carries the sealed meteorite on his back, its dark power bound within his ancient shell. He stays in the ocean, anchored in one place far from the land, ensuring no more can be corrupted by it *"

Ryn and Mewtwo's minds flashed to the giant Torterra they had glimpsed, its massive form rooted in the sea. * So that's why he stayed so far from shore * Ryn thought, his chest tightening with awe and pity.

"* The guardian of the sky temple is a giant Dragonite, the last of its clan. Its kin migrated beyond Xytherion long ago, but it remained, bound by duty to guard the door. It sings of its loneliness, a melody that echoes across the skies *"

Ryn's heart sank further, picturing the lone Dragonite, the Tyranitar guarding the dead spirits of its clan, and Gardevoir herself, staying here lonely even though her partner passed away an unknown time ago.

Gardevoir continued, her tone resolute. "* We guardians are unique. After becoming guardians, we gained the ability to resist the corruption that lingers in Xytherion. But even we would fall if we neared the meteorite. To protect the world, humans and Pokémon called upon the god Pokémon, Arceus. With its power, they sealed Xytherion across dimensions, hiding it to stop the corruption's spread *"

Ryn was overwhelmed, imagining how long they must have spent here, lonely and alone. "Is there any way I can help?" he asked, his voice trembling with desperation and resolve.

Gardevoir let out a weary sigh. "* For now, I don't know if you can help. But I've felt the corruption weakening. In a few thousand years, it may fade. Until then, we have no choice but to wait *"

"* Now, let me tell you how to leave. You are slowly being corrupted. While you and your Pokémon may be more resistant than others, you must get out quickly *"

She raised a hand, her eyes glowing faintly. "* In the sky, there is a door guarded by the giant Dragonite. It will send you home. Seek it, and do not stay here any longer *"

Ryn nodded, his mind racing. Gardevoir's gaze softened, a faint smile touching her lips. "* It was good to meet a human after so long. I wish to know what's happening in the outside world, but you should go now *"

Ryn felt a pang of guilt for leaving Gardevoir and every Pokémon in this world without being able to help. Still, he understood he didn't know what made him and his Pokémon special or resistant. * I have to trust her warning * he thought. He nodded, agreeing he should leave as fast as he could.

But before leaving, Ryn paused. "Wait, I have something for you." He reached into his bag, pulling out a chocolate bar, a meager token of thanks, and handed it to her. "Unwrap it and eat it. It's… something good from the current world."

Gardevoir tilted her head, curious. "* What is this? *" she asked, her telepathic voice tinged with wonder.

Ryn smiled faintly. "It's a sweet called chocolate. You'll like it."

Gardevoir took the chocolate, her fingers trembling slightly as she held the unfamiliar gift. With a gentle wave of her hand, her psychic energy enveloped them. The world blurred, and Ryn and Mewtwo materialized beside a giant Dragonite.

The giant Dragonite turned, its mournful song fading as it sensed their arrival. Its eyes, ancient and weary, studied them with quiet curiosity.

Ryn stepped forward, his voice steady despite the weight in his chest. "Hello, Dragonite. I'm Ryn, and this is Mewtwo. Gardevoir said you can send us back to our world."

Dragonite nodded, having received Gardevoir's message that Ryn and Mewtwo were uncorrupted and could be allowed to leave. It led them to a golden door, similar to, or perhaps the same as, the one through which Ryn had entered Xytherion. With a gentle motion, it opened the portal, a shimmering gateway to their world.

Ryn pulled out another chocolate bar and unwrapped it carefully. "This is for you," he said, holding it out to Dragonite.

The chocolate was tiny, about the size of Ryn's hand, looking very small for the giant Dragonite. Dragonite looked curious and gently took the chocolate with its giant claws, eating it and amazed at how good it tasted, appreciating this creature more.

Back in her temple, Gardevoir unwrapped her chocolate and took a small bite. She spoke softly in the empty room, "* This is sweet and good. The world has changed so much *" She thought sadly.

"* What other amazing things are out there? *" she wondered. "* Zar would have loved this… *" With a sigh, she added,

"* It was nice to see humans again. Are our tribes still close like in the past? *"

* From Ryn's bond with his Pokémon, the world probably is, maybe even closer than before * It took her a week to learn Ryn's language as she watched him and his Pokémon from afar, but their connection felt stronger than the old days of humans and Pokémon.

Ryn and Mewtwo emerged from the portal, surfacing in the deep ocean with Mewtwo's psychic aid. They finally rose out of the deep ocean water.

Ryn looked at the water, his mind heavy with Gardevoir's stories: the Tyranitar's torment, Dragonite's loneliness, Torterra's sacrifice, and who knows how many countless others, along with Gardevoir's grief for Zar.

He nodded, pulling a water bottle from his bag. "Let's help them," he whispered.
