Chapter 70: Chapter 70: Six Against One
The Mega-Evolved Charizard, having broken through its natural restraints, roared toward the sky. Its oppressive, draconic pressure washed over its teammates, a tangible force that made the very air tremble. The weakest among them, Cubone, couldn't even withstand the aura and nearly fainted. Fortunately, Red reacted instantly, using his psychic power to shield the small Pokémon before healing it with a gentle application of his Viridian Power.
"What an astonishing aura!" the Millennium Gengar stammered. Even after living for a thousand years, it had never witnessed Mega Evolution and was stunned by such a drastic transformation.
After seeing Charizard's power, Scyther's bladed arms began to tremble.
'What? Scared?' the Blood-Red Gyarados teased.
'No! I'm trembling with excitement for the battle that's about to unfold!' Scyther's eyes gleamed as it shouted, its entire body radiating a fierce battle lust. It had long harbored the desire to challenge Charizard.
"It seems your fighting spirits are high, which makes me very pleased," Red nodded, his gaze falling on the smaller Dratini and Cubone. Seeing that the two young Pokémon were not afraid of Charizard's oppressive presence, he smiled with relief.
"Let's make a plan!" the Millennium Gengar proposed. "The boss didn't immediately order us to fight. He definitely wants the six of us to defeat Charizard with a strategy!"
The other Pokémon agreed. Although still at odds with Gengar, Scyther was not foolish enough to argue at such a critical moment.
(I hope this cooperation can reconcile you two,) Red thought, glancing at Scyther and Gengar before turning his attention back to his ace.
"How are you adapting?"
Upon hearing this, Charizard nodded excitedly, the dark blue flames coiling around its mouth eager to be unleashed. Although it knew Mega Evolution was temporary, it was so thrilled to enjoy this new form that its confident grin never faded.
"To defeat Charizard, the most important thing is to defend against its flames!" Gengar announced, turning to the Blood-Red Gyarados. "Gyarados, I'll leave the fire to you!"
"Secondly, Charizard isn't afraid of water anymore, so the main source of damage will have to be Onix's power. Rock-type moves are our best bet. As for Cubone, act when you see an opening; the main purpose is to train you!"
"Scyther and I will be the primary supporting attackers. Dratini, you fight alongside Onix. Dragon-type moves can also counter Charizard, but don't be rash!"
After listening to Gengar's plan, the other Pokémon nodded in agreement. Even Scyther gave Gengar a slight nod of approval, realizing this Ghost-type Pokémon wasn't as lazy as it appeared.
"I just thought hard about it. Actually, any of us could have come up with that if we thought carefully!" Gengar said humbly. The sentence instantly boosted the goodwill of the other Pokémon—a truly high-level display of emotional intelligence.
"I didn't expect that Gengar to be quite the talker," Red praised, signaling Charizard to get ready.
"When this stone lands, your battle begins immediately!" Red said to all his Pokémon, pointing to a small rock floating in his hand with psychic power. Under their intense gazes, he tossed it into the air. A few seconds later, it hit the ground.
'I'm going first!'
The Blood-Red Gyarados roared, its Intimidate trying to weaken Charizard's attack. It then swung its massive tail, channeling its Torrent-boosted power into a furious assault.
'Good one!'
Charizard's claws glowed with an emerald energy as it met the attack with Dragon Claw. Boosted by its new Tough Claws ability, the blow was so powerful it sent the massive Gyarados skidding back several feet.
"What a pity. It didn't even make the Dragon Scales on Charizard retract!" Seeing that the grayish-black scales had not changed, Gengar knew that the Multiscale ability was still active.
Sharp stones floated around Onix; Cubone hefted its bone club; Scyther began to gather airflow, and Gengar's hands formed shadowy blades of a Shadow Sneak. After Dratini unleashed a powerful Dragon Breath, the moves of the four other Pokémon followed in a coordinated barrage.
The best defense is offense. Charizard had always followed this principle. A swirling, dark blue energy enveloped its body, forming the fierce phantom of a giant dragon. With Dragon Rush also receiving the boost from Tough Claws, its power was immense.
The attacks collided with explosive force, shaking the hills. Residents far away in Lavender Town were stunned by the sound, nearly calling Officer Jenny. Fortunately, Mr. Fuji and Reina quickly explained the situation, preventing another unnecessary misunderstanding.
A scraping sound came from the smoke. Charizard emerged, its protective Dragon Scales now retracted due to the powerful attack. The effect of Multiscale was gone.
"What a good ability!" Gengar said enviously. The full-power attack of six Pokémon seemed to have little effect; Charizard still looked full of energy.
'Excellent! My flames are completely excited and burning!'
Charizard unleashed a torrent of high-temperature, dark blue flames. Seeing this, the Blood-Red Gyarados quickly countered with Hydro Pump, but it underestimated Charizard's current strength. Even its powerful jet of water was immediately suppressed. Onix quickly used Iron Tail to heave a boulder into the path of the fire, but the huge rock began to melt under the intense heat.
Cubone lovingly stroked its bone club, which had almost been caught in the blaze. Fortunately, Charizard, knowing it was Cubone's only weapon, had casually knocked it aside, saving it from being melted.
Seeing only five Pokémon before it, Charizard immediately understood Gengar's plan. The ghost's eyes glowed blue, intending to use Hypnosis, while Scyther, already prepared, unleashed an Air Slash.
'Petty tricks!'
Charizard scoffed, using Fire Spin on the ground to create a wall of fire, blocking Gengar's line of sight and defending against the wind blades.
'Now, lie down obediently!'
Charizard shattered the rocks on its body with its wings, enduring Onix's Rock Slide attack, then used Dragon Claw to pin a figure to the ground, followed by a point-blank Flamethrower. The figure, which looked like Gengar, dissolved into a mist amidst a scream.
"Substitute? A good tactic," Red said with a hint of praise. He never believed Gengar would be defeated so easily. If that were the case, its thousand years of experience would have been wasted.
"It seems my tactic was successful!" the real Gengar floated out from a shadow, a grin on its face. The previously excited Charizard suddenly looked confused; it found it temporarily couldn't use Dragon Claw.
"It's the effect of Disable," Red explained to the bewildered Charizard. "Gengar has the Cursed Body ability, which has a thirty percent chance of sealing the opponent's last used move. The effect lasts for four turns."
'What a treacherous Ghost-type Pokémon!' Charizard said, displeased. Its proud move was sealed just like that; it was truly frustrating.
"Isn't this to defeat a master like you?" Gengar said, scratching its head awkwardly. The flattering words momentarily satisfied Charizard's pride, but Gengar's eyes were now emitting a faint blue light, preparing to use Hypnosis.
'You little rascal! Daring to trick me!'
Charizard roared, spitting dark blue flames from its mouth and fiercely flapping its huge wings, unleashing a devastating Heat Wave. The scorching heat instantly enveloped the area in front of Gengar. Seeing this, the ghost abandoned its plan for Hypnosis and turned to use its own psychic power to control the wave of fire.
