Chapter 104: CHAPTER 105
c105: Gyarados, Ash's Conquest Battle!
"Ash, don't be reckless! This Gyarados isn't something you can handle alone!" Professor Oak called out urgently as he motioned for the other students to retreat. Rushing forward with his Champion-level Dragonite hovering behind him, Oak's face was lined with tension.
"Professor, believe in me," Ash replied without turning around. "This Gyarados has already been worn down during the underwater struggle. Froakie and I can take it from here."
"Besides," Ash continued, glancing back with amber-hued, unwavering eyes, "this is still part of my evaluation. You can't interfere mid-assessment, right?"
Oak paused, caught off guard by Ash's calm confidence. The boy's gaze.clear, unwavering reminded him of the moments he'd seen Ash in past simulations and aura tests, especially that incident with Riolu's awakening. For a second, Oak saw not a student, but a Trainer on the cusp of greatness.
After glancing at the visibly tired Gyarados thrashing in the river, Oak reluctantly nodded. "Alright, Ash. But be careful. If anything goes wrong, retreat immediately. Your safety is the top priority."
He added firmly, "Dragonite and I are right behind you. If the situation escalates, we'll step in."
"Understood, Professor," Ash responded. Then, with renewed focus, he prepared to finish the battle.
"Froakie, use Aqua Ring!"
"Quaa!" From the riverbank, Froakie croaked sharply, generating glowing rings of water that began circulating around its body, healing minor damage and boosting stamina. Without hesitation, it sprang into the river, feet kicking sharply.
Ash gripped his fishing rod tightly its line still firmly embedded in Gyarados's mouth maintaining tension like a seasoned angler. It was a duel of endurance now: Ash and Froakie versus the river's raging beast.
"ROAR!!" Gyarados, swept up in the escalating tension, let out a furious roar. The sound echoed off the canyon walls, sending chills down the spines of the gathered students. Even the group that had been chatting nervously now stood frozen.
Ash didn't waver. "Froakie, use Froakie Foam! Cover its eyes!"
"Quack!"
With only its head breaching the water's surface, Froakie swiftly reached behind its neck, detached two pads of frubble, and hurled them with ninja-like precision at Gyarados's eyes.
Because Ash hadn't used Aura telepathy this time, the wild Gyarados couldn't distinguish intention from aggression. Mistaking the frubbles for an offensive move, it raised its tail in defense too slow.
Splat!
"ROARRR!!" Gyarados reared, blinded and disoriented. Froakie's non-damaging move had functioned as planned: a tactical distraction. The beast thrashed, agitated but sightless, lashing its tail and stirring waves.
Ash saw the opening. "Froakie! Stay at range and fire Bubble! Don't let it get close!"
"Kwaa!"
Puff puff puff! Froakie leapt from the water, belly expanded, and let loose a burst of thick, high-pressure bubbles, aimed directly at Gyarados. Each orb hit the mark.
Bang bang bang! the attacks popped loudly against the enormous Pokémon's armored scales. Gyarados, unable to see, couldn't dodge and became a massive, immobile target.
"ROARRR!!" Gyarados screamed, whipping the river into a frenzy. It twisted midair, sending gales of wind across the water. The sky above darkened suddenly, and a low rumble echoed.
"Is it… Rain Dance?" one student muttered.
As Ash narrowed his eyes, droplets began to fall. "Yeah," he said. "It's trying to shift the weather."
Shhhk… The drizzle began softly, quickly intensifying over the river.
Gang Ping quickly coordinated the student evacuation, shepherding everyone back to safer ground. But Oak stood firm beside Ash, Dragonite hovering like a sentinel, prepared to act.
Ash, however, remained in full control. The rain whipped around him, the spool of his rod screeching as he reeled with one hand and signaled Froakie with the other. The fishing line never slackened he refused to let Gyarados break free.
"Froakie, maintain your distance! Keep pressuring it from afar!"
"Kwaa!"
Froakie bounced from wave to wave, striking with rhythmic bursts of Bubble, unrelenting. Ash didn't flinch as lightning flashed above; he was locked into the moment, one hand guiding the rod, the other commanding a bond built through trust and training.
This was no longer a fishing match. It was a battle of mastery will against will, Trainer versus titan.
Froakie, being a recently hatched starter Pokémon with limited combat experience, didn't have many attack moves in its current arsenal just Pound, Bubble, and Quick Attack. Although Gyarados's physical defense was weaker than its special defense, Froakie's small frame meant it didn't dare close the distance recklessly against the massive, serpentine Water/Flying-type. Ash understood well that a frontal assault would be suicidal.
The remainder of the battle strategy hinged on attrition. Froakie's access to Aqua Ring a regenerative support move learned during a previous mock battle at camp allowed it to gradually restore stamina. While Bubble dealt only minor chip damage per hit, Ash and Froakie exploited its range and frequency. After over ten minutes of sustained pressure, Gyarados's contest condition plummeted. With its eyes still sealed under the sticky frubbles of Frubbleshield, it had no way of tracking its nimble opponent.
Throughout the standoff, Froakie maintained a distant, evasive approach, circling and repositioning like a kite in the wind. Gyarados, disoriented and unable to land an accurate hit, took repeated blows. Onshore, Ash coordinated every motion, manipulating the fishing rod line tactically—reeling, jerking, and dragging intermittently to disrupt Gyarados's balance and keep it tethered, further wearing down its stamina.
All the while, the steady downpour continued in the Soaring Skies above a lingering result of Gyarados's earlier Rain Dance. Neither Ash nor Froakie paid it any mind. Their focus was absolute, locked into the rhythm of battle as if nothing else in the world existed.
Together, the boy and his Pokémon pressed on: one reeling and commanding from the shore, the other darting and striking on the water's surface.
5 minutes...10 minutes...15 minutes...
Froakie kept its distance, aided by the continuous healing from Aqua Ring, and kept pelting Gyarados with Bubble. Occasionally, when it spotted an opening—usually after Gyarados misfired an Aqua Tail into empty space it dashed in using Quick Attack to strike Gyarados's jaw or underbelly before retreating.
Ash, soaked to the bone, gripped the fishing rod like a lifeline. Rainwater streamed down his face, into his eyes, stinging like acid. His wet hair clung to his forehead, his T-shirt stuck to his skin, and his shorts were smeared with mud and shredded grass. The camp-issued slippers had slipped from his feet and now dangled uselessly at his ankles.
Yet none of this registered in his mind.
Ash saw only Gyarados his target. He thought only of Froakie his partner. And his hands never let go of the rod—the symbol of this relentless contest.
15 minutes...20 minutes...30 minutes...
Gyarados, blinded and fatigued, flailed in rage but could no longer keep up. Its great body, once fierce and intimidating, was now a massive, thrashing target with dulled reactions. Ash's strategic rod tugs kept it off-balance, while Froakie's barrage of ranged Bubble strikes and opportunistic Quick Attacks wore it down.
It was a simplistic strategy keep a safe distance, whittle away health with Bubble, then strike with Quick Attack when safe but it was flawlessly executed. What it lacked in complexity, it made up for in sheer persistence and resolve.
And even from afar, Professor Oak and the gathered campers recognized that.
They watched, mesmerized, as Ash sprinted along the muddy riverbank, fishing rod in hand, drenched and dripping, soaked like a drowned Rattata. But in their eyes, he stood tall not just a kid from Pallet Town, but a true Trainer.
This wasn't just a battle. It was a test of heart.
And for over thirty minutes, Ash had shown no signs of giving up. His unwavering spirit, his tenacity to outlast and outmaneuver a wild Gyarados using only a novice Froakie, struck something deep in every onlooker.
Even those who had doubted him were now quietly moved by his endurance, his connection with Froakie, and his fierce will to triumph.
