Viridian Gym.
Viridian Gym stood just near the city center. Though Viridian City wasn't one of those ultra-modern metropolises brimming with skyscrapers, its downtown still pulsed with life. Bustling crowds filled the avenues, department stores overflowed with shoppers, and couples could often be seen enjoying snacks at cozy food stalls. Yet amidst all this urban vibrancy, a long-abandoned building stood blatantly and unapologetically at the heart of it all.
The gym looked like a half-constructed ruin—its weathered walls overgrown with creeping vines. Logan stood in front of the rusting iron gates, but made no move to enter.
"You're a Trainer, aren't you, young man?"
Just as Logan was lost in thought outside the gym, a gentle elderly voice spoke beside him. He turned his head and saw a kind-faced old woman standing next to him, a warm, grandmotherly smile on her face.
"Mm, yes. I'm a Trainer," Logan nodded politely.
"Well then," the old woman said slowly, her voice a little frail. "If you're here to challenge the gym, I'm afraid you've come to the wrong place. The Viridian Gym hasn't had a Leader for five years now."
Logan remained silent, listening patiently. He'd always respected his elders—a value he held close.
"No Leader in five years? Didn't the League assign someone new?" Logan asked, curious.
"They did try. But none of the citizens here accepted them. Any Trainer who came hoping to take over the gym eventually left. The previous Leader—Giovanni—was truly exceptional. He ran this place for many years. It's because of him that the people of Viridian City can't bring themselves to accept anyone else."
"Oh? Why is that?"
"Giovanni was such a generous man. Every holiday, he'd hand out sweets and snacks to the children. He donated large sums to charities each year. Many of the roads you see in this city? He paid for their repairs himself. Giovanni was born and raised right here in Viridian. Over the years, he gave so much to this city—he was deeply respected. They say he was the 'Strongest Gym Leader.' When he vanished five years ago, no one believed anything bad had happened to him. So the gym has remained empty. Everyone is still waiting for his return. Look over there…"
The old woman raised her hand with effort, pointing toward a massive building in the distance—nearly the size of a football stadium.
"Back when Giovanni still led the gym, every match would fill that place to capacity. The entire city would come to cheer him on. He never lost a single match. But ever since he disappeared, those days of excitement and joy have vanished. Ah… But enough of that. It's all in the past now."
She shook her head, letting out a soft sigh, and slowly shuffled away. Perhaps seeing a young Trainer reminded her of better days, and she simply needed someone to talk to.
Logan watched her go, a touch of wonder in his gaze.
"So Giovanni was that revered in Viridian City, huh? Then again, it makes sense. To be the hidden boss behind Team Rocket… If we forget about his past deeds, he must've been quite the charming gentleman."
After taking one last look at the forsaken gym, Logan turned and headed for the train station.
Maglev trains could reach speeds of up to 500 kilometers per hour. Clean and efficient, they had become the primary means of travel between cities not only in Kanto but also across other regions. At the Viridian City station, Logan purchased a non-reserved ticket for the next train bound for Pewter City.
Pewter lay to the north, and between it and Viridian stretched a rail line cut straight through the man-made Viridian Forest. Though the distance wasn't vast, the maglev train got Logan there in just half an hour.
He exited the bustling station and made his way to the taxi zone, hopping into an electric-powered cab. The region had long abandoned oil-fueled cars in favor of clean energy.
Pewter City sat nestled within rugged mountainous terrain—a true mountain city. Surrounded by the Viridian Forest and Mt. Moon, it wasn't as flashy or modern as cities like Goldenrod or Celadon. Its architecture leaned toward the bold and angular, reflecting a raw, earthy spirit. Pewter had always been known for its mining industry. With the mysterious influence of Pokémon, even the natural formation of minerals seemed accelerated. As a result, the majority of the city's population relied on mining as their livelihood.
The taxi zipped through the streets, and Logan sat in the back listening to the driver's endless chatter. The locals here were just like their city—straightforward and hearty. Logan didn't speak much, simply letting the man talk, soaking in stories and tourist tidbits about Pewter.
Unsurprisingly, what the driver talked about most was Pewter City's Gym Leader—Brock. The pride in his voice was obvious, and even an outsider like Logan could feel it.
In this world, professions of all sorts existed—singers, actors, models—but none held quite the cultural status of a city's Gym Leader. Each Leader was a symbol of their hometown, a beacon of pride and prestige. They were local idols, wielders of the city's highest form of authority. In a society that revered Pokémon and those who trained them, powerful Trainers were more than just celebrities—they were icons.
After what felt like an eternity of chatter, Logan finally arrived at the Pokémon Center.
Inside, he used a device powered by technology from an ancient ruin—later improved by a famous Pokémon analyst named Bill—to transfer his excess Pokémon to Professor Oak. The Pokémon Storage System was a marvel of convenience.
But what really irked Logan was the fact that… it cost money to use!
The Pokémon Center, a staple in every city, wasn't some tiny clinic—it was a massive complex, more akin to a luxury hotel. The first floor housed the core healing equipment and buzzed with nurses and Trainers awaiting their Pokémon's recovery. Upper floors contained ICU wards—for the critically ill or elderly Pokémon. And above those were hotel-style rooms. Certified Trainers even got steep discounts on accommodations.
"So just because I'm not an official Trainer yet, I can't get the discount? Then what exactly makes someone a Trainer, huh?"
Logan argued with the smiling receptionist, tapping the desk in protest.
He hadn't realized there was some kind of certification process. Was it like getting a driver's license? Did he have to take a test?
Still smiling, the receptionist replied calmly, "To become a certified Trainer, all you need is one Gym Badge."
Logan rolled his eyes. He had clearly come to the right place—but at the wrong time.
Fine. He'd just check into the nearest hotel close to the gym. Tomorrow, first thing in the morning, he'd challenge for his first badge. After all, being a Trainer came with privileges. Once recognized, it would open up many doors. And like every aspiring Trainer, he would one day stand on the stage of the Pokémon League. But that journey… began with the very first badge.
