Chapter 70: Chapter 70: Methods of Training Psyduck
"It should be very weak. Misty usually dislikes Psyduck," Ash said thoughtfully, resting his chin on his hand.
"I don't dislike Psyduck," Misty replied defensively. "I just think this Psyduck is... different from the others I've seen before."
"Then Misty, do you know more about Psyduck?" Gary asked, leaning forward, curious.
"I don't know," Misty admitted, a bit embarrassed. She dreamed of becoming a water Pokémon master, so she naturally had to understand all water-type Pokémon, but Psyduck remained an enigma to her.
Although Misty loved water Pokémon, she preferred the cute and adorable ones. Psyduck's silly behavior just frustrated her, and she had never quite understood it.
"Although Psyduck is a water-type Pokémon, it actually has a very high Psychic talent and powerful psychic abilities," Gary explained, his voice filled with knowledge. "The stronger Psyduck's psychic power, the more headaches it experiences, which makes it seem dumber. But the dumber it appears, the higher its potential."
"What! Is there such a thing?" Ash exclaimed, shocked. He had let Misty capture Psyduck because it seemed so clueless, but now he regretted it. He knew how powerful Psychic-type Pokémon could be, and hearing this new information made him second-guess his decision.
"Really?" Misty asked, looking at Psyduck, who was floating in the hot spring with a look of contentment. She hadn't been paying attention to what Gary had said, too focused on how her Psyduck had been acting. But if Gary was right, then maybe her Psyduck wasn't as ordinary as she thought.
"Sabrina, you're a Psychic, right? You should be able to sense the psychic energy in Psyduck," Gary said, turning to Sabrina.
Misty quickly turned her gaze to Sabrina. Sabrina's father, Najun, was a well-known psychic, so Misty had always assumed Sabrina had similar abilities.
"Miss Sabrina, is it true?" Misty asked, her voice filled with hope.
"I'll help you check," Sabrina replied with a calm nod.
She approached Psyduck and placed her hand gently on its head. Her eyes closed in concentration as she tuned into Psyduck's mental energy.
Once Sabrina sensed Psyduck's psychic power, her pupils widened in surprise.
"Miss Sabrina, what's wrong?" Misty asked, seeing the change in Sabrina's expression.
"This Psyduck has incredibly strong mental power and great potential. It could easily reach Elite level," Sabrina said, her voice serious.
Sabrina's perception of Psychic Pokémon allowed her to detect their potential. She sensed that Psyduck's mental power was on par with her own Abra at its peak. This meant Psyduck had at least Elite potential, and possibly even Champion-level potential.
"Really!" Misty exclaimed, surprised. She had been struggling with how to handle Psyduck, but now she saw it in a new light.
Ash and Brock were also shocked by the revelation. They hadn't expected that Psyduck, who always seemed so silly and slow, actually possessed such impressive potential.
"But even if Psyduck has great potential, how do we train it?" Misty asked, frowning.
"Yes, having high potential is one thing, but training it is another," Ash and Brock chimed in, agreeing that Psyduck's training would be a challenge.
"Well..." Misty trailed off, clearly uncertain. She had always seen Psyduck as a bit of a burden, and now with this new knowledge, she wondered how to unlock its true abilities.
Gary explained, "To train Psyduck, there are two methods. One is to let it evolve into Golduck, which would allow Psyduck to fully master its psychic powers."
"The second method is hypnosis. If we hypnotize Psyduck, it can become familiar with how to control its mental powers. Over time, it will be able to control its abilities better."
These methods weren't just random ideas from Gary; they were conclusions he had discussed with Professor Oak.
"What else can Psyduck evolve into?" Ash asked, intrigued. He took out his Pokédex from his yukata pocket to look up more information.
"Golduck, the Duck Pokémon, is the evolution of Psyduck. It has webbed feet on both hands that it uses to move at great speed in the water. It is the fastest water-type Pokémon," the Pokédex explained, displaying a photo of Golduck.
"Golduck looks so cool," Ash said in awe. It was hard to imagine that the goofy Psyduck could evolve into such a sleek and powerful form.
"Golduck is so cool!" Misty exclaimed, suddenly becoming a fan of Golduck's appearance.
But Brock, ever the practical one, added, "Misty, your Psyduck isn't at a high enough level yet. You still have quite a way to go before it can evolve into Golduck."
"Uh...what's hypnosis training?" Misty asked, intrigued by the idea.
"Hypnosis training is when you use Hypnosis to put Psyduck into a hypnotic state, then give it instructions to use Confusion while it's in that state. Over time, this will help Psyduck control its psychic powers and reduce its headaches," Gary explained.
"Hypnosis training? I've never heard of this method before," Ash said, clearly impressed by the idea.
Misty, Brock, and Ash were all hearing about hypnosis training for the first time. It was a method that not many trainers knew about, and it sounded like it could be the key to unlocking Psyduck's potential.
"Of course, there are Pokémon that are born specifically for training through this method," Gary added. "If Psyduck can master the Sleep Talk technique, training will be even easier."
"Then Gary, how do we get started with hypnosis training?" Misty asked earnestly, eager to help Psyduck reach its full potential.
"Sabrina, your Hypnosis abilities should be perfect for this. You can give Psyduck subconscious commands," Gary said, turning to Sabrina.
"I'll give it a try," Sabrina said, not hesitating. She had confidence in her abilities.
Sabrina didn't refuse. She gently pinched Psyduck's bill and positioned its head to face her. Then, she focused and let her psychic energy flow.
Psyduck stared at her, confused and uncomprehending.
"Guh?" it muttered, not understanding the situation at all.
Sabrina's eyes glowed with a blue aura as she activated Hypnosis. Almost immediately, Psyduck's eyelids drooped halfway, and its body relaxed as it floated gently in the water.
As Sabrina guided it into the hypnotic state, the water around Psyduck seemed to become like solid ground, and it floated calmly, completely entranced.
Psyduck's usual confusion and clumsiness had faded away, replaced by a peaceful, almost serene state.
"This is working," Gary whispered, observing the process.
With the hypnotic training beginning, the potential that Misty had once struggled to understand now seemed clear. Psyduck, though often seen as silly and clueless, was actually full of untapped power. It was time for Misty to properly unlock its potential.
