Chapter 71: Chapter 71: Advice to Misty
Seeing Psyduck floating on the water, Misty asked, confused, "Ms. Sabrina, did you do this?"
"No, I only gave Psyduck the command to expend mental energy. Psyduck used Confusion to float on the water," Sabrina replied calmly.
"Really? Psyduck's eyes are glowing!" Ash was astonished. He had finally come to believe that Psyduck had great potential.
"Then should we just leave Psyduck like this?" Misty asked, still uncertain.
"It just followed the instructions I gave it before the hypnosis. I tried to communicate with it earlier, but it didn't respond to my commands," Sabrina explained.
"What should I do then?"
Misty's anxiety grew. This was one of the few ways to train Psyduck, and if this method didn't work, she wasn't sure what else to try.
"Misty, you're Psyduck's trainer, so it's up to you to command it," Sabrina said, encouraging her.
"I'll do it...!" Misty was taken aback.
"What, is there a problem?" Sabrina asked, noticing her hesitation.
"Well... I don't really know what skills Psyduck can use, and I don't know how to command it," Misty explained awkwardly.
Although she had owned Psyduck for a long time, the only time she had commanded it was to use a basic move like grabbing, which had ended in Psyduck injuring its claws. As for any other skills, Psyduck hadn't demonstrated much.
Ash and Brock also felt a bit awkward. After all, the three of them were traveling companions, and if one of them was struggling, it made things uncomfortable for everyone.
"Confusion," Sabrina said, her tone calm as she coached Misty.
"I know," Misty nodded and pointed to a rock in the distance. "Psyduck, use Confusion on the rock over there!"
"Guba!" Psyduck roared suddenly, and a surge of psychic energy erupted. The water in the hot spring splashed outward, and a large stone, nearly as tall as a person, was lifted into the air.
The stone swung back and forth as it hovered, finally being hurled away by Psyduck's Confusion.
"Oh my god, that's amazing!" Ash was stunned. He never imagined Psyduck could use Confusion so powerfully, easily lifting and throwing a large stone. It was even more impressive than the Psychic Pokémon in Saffron Gym under Najun's command.
"Guba," Psyduck suddenly sank back into the hot spring, clearly exhausted. Misty, quick on her feet, rushed to catch Psyduck.
"Psyduck, are you okay?" Misty asked with concern.
"Guba?" Psyduck replied, tilting its head in confusion. It had no idea what had just happened. It had been enjoying its bath, and now it was surrounded by less water in the hot spring.
"You were amazing just now, Psyduck!" Misty praised, relieved that it was okay.
"Guba?" Psyduck still seemed puzzled.
Psyduck was soaking in a hot spring, so how could it have been so amazing? What had it done?
"What happened to you? You just threw that big rock!" Misty reminded it, eager for Psyduck to remember.
"Goo?" Psyduck tilted its head again, still not understanding.
"Psyduck, you don't remember what you did just now?" Misty asked, confused.
"Goo?" Psyduck was even more perplexed. It couldn't recall anything that had just occurred.
"Don't worry about it. Psyduck only released Confusion while under the hypnotic state. It won't remember anything it does during that time," Gary explained.
"Will this method actually be effective for training?" Misty asked, still unsure. If Psyduck could only use its abilities under hypnosis and didn't remember anything afterward, would it help at all?
"Of course it will, but it requires long-term training. Your Psyduck has a lot of mental energy. It's usually so 'dumb' because it's overwhelmed by this energy in its head. If you command Psyduck now, it should be able to do what you tell it to do," Gary reassured her.
"Then Psyduck, try using Confusion again," Misty said, hoping for the best.
"Guba?" Psyduck tilted its head, frowning. It couldn't remember how to use Confusion.
"Misty, since Psyduck doesn't remember what happened during hypnosis, it can't use Confusion again. But you can try some basic training like using Grabbing," Gary suggested.
"Okay, Psyduck, use Grabbing on that tree," Misty commanded.
"Guba!" Psyduck immediately followed the command, running to the land and using its claws to strike a nearby tree.
Bang!
Psyduck slapped the tree trunk with one claw, leaving three shallow scratches. But immediately, Psyduck cried out in pain as its claw swelled up.
"What a headache," Misty sighed in frustration. She quickly brought Psyduck back into the hot spring and used the warm water to apply a compress to its swollen claw.
Although Psyduck was still weak, at least it had followed Misty's command this time. Previously, whenever she tried to give orders, Psyduck would seem clueless, as if it didn't even understand what she was saying.
"Psyduck is like this because of its mental energy. Be thankful for that, because it means its potential is high. You now know how to train it. Focus on evolving it into Golduck as soon as possible, and you'll be able to help it control its mental energy," Gary advised.
Misty nodded. "I'll train Psyduck well."
Now that she understood Psyduck's potential and the method to train it, the rest was up to Misty. If she couldn't train Psyduck, it would be her own fault.
"But Misty, do you have any Pokémon that can use Hypnosis?" Ash asked, noticing a problem.
"This...!" Misty paused, suddenly realizing. None of the Pokémon she owned knew Hypnosis.
"Gary, do you know any water-type Pokémon that can learn Hypnosis?" Misty asked, feeling a little desperate.
"Water-type Pokémon… Psyduck can learn it, but you already have a Psyduck. The only other option is Poliwag," Gary said.
"Poliwag... I don't have one," Misty admitted, frustrated.
Gary paused, thinking for a moment. He remembered that Misty had a Politoed, which was bred from Poliwag. It seemed like she hadn't captured a Poliwag yet.
"Well, go catch one, or see if Ash or Brock has a Pokémon that knows Hypnosis," Gary suggested.
"None of my Pokémon know Hypnosis," Ash said, then had a thought. "Gary, by the way, how many Pokémon have you captured?"
"Why are you asking this?" Gary replied, slightly confused. "We're not discussing my Pokémon right now. Why the sudden question?"
"If you're going to ask, just tell me," Ash said, getting curious.
"Ten Pokémon," Gary replied.
"What! Only ten?" Ash was stunned. "I thought you'd caught a lot more by now."
"Why are you surprised?" Gary asked, a little confused. "According to the timeline, you've caught fewer than ten Pokémon yourself."
"I thought you caught more than that, but I didn't expect it to be fewer than Orange and Yellow," Ash remarked, referring to the other trainers they knew.
As the conversation shifted, Misty was still contemplating how best to train Psyduck. With new techniques in mind and advice from her friends, she was determined to help Psyduck reach its full potential.
