Chapter 232: Fate.
Indeed, it was satisfying when it clicked, the doctor was completely frozen, not even blinking, just like Eva and Niam. It was a ridiculous situation, because they were the ones who were surprised and overwhelmed by panic when they pointed the gun at James.
On the other hand James himself was kinda stupid and he knew it very well. He was reckless with the move, and if the gun would have actually chambered and shot, he would be fucked up on a different level and now would probably be gasping for air with broken ribs. But it worked and the gun wasn't chambered, but not just that.
The thing is, after the load clicked, after Niam pulled the trigger, he didn't even try to chamber, didn't even try to do anything. And not just him but Eva too. She didn't aim, she didn't switch off the safety or chamber any round, just looked with that desperate expression on her face and with the surprise that, what the fuck is this?
That wasn't the reaction she wanted, that wasn't how a person should react when a gun is aimed at him and the trigger is pulled. She wanted and thought he would be scared as fuck, like if he would beg or something. And well, that was their plan all along, that always was their plan, which just shows how lowlife they are.
They just want to scare people with the pistol and their family name. Yeah, with a pistol that doesn't even have bullets loaded.
Yeah, those two motherfuckers were aiming with a weapon at James that wasn't even loaded. They just wanted to scare him and show him who they are, to have some kind of upper hand… but they fucked up greatly… because the gun at James's waist was loaded and ready, as well as Mike at the door who was still peeking and was, well… he also shit himself seeing all of this. He wanted to act, he had his gun out too, but still, James wasn't the same as before. And he knew if he acted, even if it meant saving him, he could again turn into something worse…
And second, he heard about them, the Braccachi family and even their father is going around with an empty gun, only there to scare people… but that it really was something that was just utterly dumb for them. Not just dumb but life-ending… because even if it wasn't loaded with a single bullet, they aimed a deadly weapon at the exact same person they pretended to be.
The nation drug lord or at least the one who's going to end up controlling the entire drug market in the country.
"Really?" James asked as he shook his head, and he was a little under the spell of what the fuck he actually did, and well, he could have been now wounded or, at the worst, dead. But, well, it was funny to him.
These two are sweating like shit, their hands and legs shaking, those eyes that are just looking at him in fear… but the question of what?
How could they fear a man in front of them who said nothing to them about himself, just asked questions, and they were the ones that aimed a gun at him… well, it was because they knew that ain't no ordinary person, even though they were dumb with a golden spoon in their ass and thinking that they are better than everybody, they knew one thing… in this world there are different breed of people and now they are in front of this Scott guy, who is exactly that, a whole different breed.
Not even a single flinch in his eye, he didn't even look discomforted by the fact that Niam aimed the gun at him, nor that he pulled the trigger. That's just almost impossible to do… at least that's what Niam thought. But the doctor, who still sat there frozen down like trying to be invisible, knew exactly what it was.
She worked decades in this field and there are humans out in the world who fear no death, like they accept the fact that they can die at any minute, and it's not about just accepting but fully embracing it. Like for them, death means nothing, it's just a thing that will happen to them and they are comfortable with it. That is one of the biggest weapons in somebody's hands, the fact that they accept death and care none for it, just like how James did it, in her eyes. She saw it and understood that there was no way he knew that the gun was empty, no way that he knew it wouldn't fire, and still, he looked without a single blink and that smirk on his face, sitting comfortably without even one fake shake in his body.
For her, it was the first time she experienced something like this. Like, Niam and Eva,yeah, they came to her a lot, but only because their father sent them and just to hang out.
But James was a whole different breed. She experienced a lot throughout her years, shell-shocked soldiers, ones that got tortured or saw their partner's head exploding, the medics who got the most trauma of the wars, those who digged deep in wounds while bullets and shrapnel flew past their head, the firefighters who carried out burned children from houses, and mangled people from crashes, but for her James was the first one that she couldn't explain… like she couldn't say anything, really didn't even talk with him, but just looking at him she felt something deeply dangerous and a threat.
Yeah, a threat and the darkness engulfing him, because those eyes were empty and ones that showed no emotions, just like his reaction to the gun. Not even a single emotion… just that smirk… yeah, who the fuck would smile if not a sociopath or psychopath?
She was sure he was one of those.
"So what now?" James asked again as they lowered their gun and just sat there like nothing happened. Well, they didn't know what the fuck to do right after they fucked up this much. "Why y'all even have a gun when it's not loaded?" He asked once again as he looked at them and always laughed.
"F-for threatening…" Eva whispered to him as she looked down on the ground, her voice full of hesitation and well, the thought of how much they were fucked up.
The thing is, they weren't just scared of James, like yeah, his eyes and whole demeanor was just different and a threat, but the thing they were scared of was what would happen if he reported them.
Like they weren't that dumb, and their tactic didn't work, he didn't get intimidated by it. And now if he reports them in, especially during the national emergency, not just them but the whole fucking family would be fucked.
"Threatening?" James asked again. "Why would you want to threaten a random person who came to help his mental health?" He asked, and well, Mike, still at the door, felt it and he knew if James started asking questions, then they were fucked… like really fucked.
But he kinda wanted to see what would happen.
"Y-you look… intimidating…" She said again as she now looked up at James and the second she did, she immediately looked back down.
Intimidating? He thought about it for a sec because he never thought of himself that much, like these people don't even know who he really is, nor his influence… and just looking at him, they feel intimidated and the need to use force?
That's another level for sure.
"Do I really look intimidating, doctor?" He asked as he turned toward her.
Well, her eyes were wide open and her hands were shaking. They stared at each other with tension and from her viewpoint, for sure, he was intimidating and scary for different reasons.
If she just looked at him, he looked exactly like a gangster or an enforcer. The missing piece of his ear was clearly from a gunshot, and the small cut on his face that was barely visible, the limping too. The moment he walked in he gave off a vibe that he ain't no businessman or at least not a legal one.
And the signet ring just gave it off too.
The capital B in her mind, and what she assumed was a family name or a gang name… well, she was right, but didn't know which exactly.
"Yeah… kinda." She said,
"Hmm… still," he looked back at them. "It's just dumb to aim and pull the trigger of an empty gun… yeah, why the fuck did you even pull it?" He asked, looking at Niam now.
"I-I just—"
He didn't finish it because he was interrupted by James, who leaned forward a bit and started digging in his pocket, then leaned back and looked disappointed.
I left it home…
"Ma'am, do you have a coin by any chance?"
