Chapter 12: Deny
As they entered her room, Alex closed the door behind them, her heart pounding in her chest. The tension between them had been simmering for days, and now, with her choice made, she was ready to embrace it fully.
Klaus barely had a chance to speak before Alex stepped closer, her eyes filled with determination and something else—something that made his breath hitch.
"You drive me crazy, you know that?" she murmured, placing her hands on his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath her fingertips.
Klaus smirked, his hands instinctively resting on her waist. "Likewise, baby girl."
A spark ignited between them as she leaned in, her lips brushing against his in a feather-light tease before pulling back just enough to see the effect she had on him. His jaw clenched, his grip on her tightening slightly.
Without another word, Alex pushed him onto the bed, straddling his lap, her eyes locked onto his with a mixture of playfulness and intensity.
Just as their lips were about to touch, klaus rolled over , pinning her beneath him. Before whispering in her ear.
Alex stared up at him, her breath caught in her throat. His hands were firm on her waist, keeping her in place, but his expression was different now—serious, almost hesitant. The playful teasing that had been between them moments ago had vanished.
Her heart pounded as she processed his words. "Wait… what?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Klaus exhaled, shifting slightly but still keeping her pinned beneath him. "I've been thinking about this for the past few days," he admitted. "We've only known each other for two weeks, and for half of that time, we barely even talked. Don't get me wrong, I feel this connection too, but… I think we should slow things down. Let's wait. Let's be friends for a while first."
Alex's eyes widened. She searched his face, trying to find any sign that he was joking, but there was none.
A mix of emotions swirled inside her—confusion, frustration, even a hint of hurt. She had made her choice. She had fought against her own hesitation, against her mother's warnings, and now he was the one pulling away?
"Are you serious right now?" she finally asked, her voice shaking slightly.
Klaus nodded, his grip on her waist loosening slightly. "Yeah, I am," he said, his voice steady but soft. "I don't want this to be something we rush into just because of the tension between us. I want to know you, Alex. Really know you."
Alex stared up at him, her lips parting slightly as if she wanted to argue, but no words came out. She had spent days agonizing over this, convincing herself that she wanted him, that she would fight for this—only for him to tell her to wait?
A part of her wanted to push him away, to get up and storm out, but another part—the rational part—knew that Klaus wasn't rejecting her. He was choosing her in a different way.
She let out a breath she didn't realize she had been holding and turned her head slightly, staring at the ceiling. "So, what? You want us to just act like nothing's happened between us?"
Klaus sighed and shifted off of her, lying beside her instead. "No. I just want to give this the time it deserves," he said, turning his head to look at her. "I don't want this to be something impulsive. I want to be with you, but the right way."
Alex clenched her jaw, frustration still simmering beneath her skin. "And what if I don't want to wait?" she asked, sitting up and looking down at him.
Klaus smirked, his hands resting behind his head as he looked up at her. "Then I guess I'll just have to prove to you that I'm worth waiting for."
Alex narrowed her eyes at him, feeling both irritated and—annoyingly—impressed. She hadn't expected this. She had thought he would jump at the chance to be with her. Instead, he was pulling back, showing control where she had lost hers.
She let out a frustrated sigh and flopped back onto the bed beside him. "You're infuriating."
Klaus chuckled, turning his head to the side to look at her. "You'll survive."
Silence stretched between them for a moment before Alex finally muttered, "Fine. Friends… for now."
Klaus grinned. "For now."
But they both knew waiting wouldn't be easy.
Alex smiled at him. "It was intelligent to use Manny to talk to me."
Klaus laughed. "Yeah, it was quite a coincidence. He was only my Plan B."
Alex raised an eyebrow. "Plan B?"
Klaus smirked. "Originally, I was going to climb up to your window and sing you a song I wrote. I even bought more flowers—that's one of the reasons I arrived a little late."
Alex tilted her head. "One of the reasons?"
Klaus chuckled. "Yes, I also wanted to make you wait a little."
Alex scoffed, crossing her arms. "So let me get this straight—you were really about to go full Romeo on me? Climbing my window, singing a song, and showering me with flowers?"
Klaus smirked. "Of course. But, you know, without the tragic ending."
Alex rolled her eyes. "I don't know… My mom might've pushed you off."
Klaus laughed. "That's why Manny was Plan B. Less chance of broken bones."
Alex shook her head, still smiling. "You really went through all that trouble just to talk to me?"
Klaus's teasing expression softened as he met her gaze. "Of course. You're worth the effort."
For a moment, Alex didn't know what to say. The way he looked at her, like she was the only thing that mattered in that moment, made her chest tighten. She had spent days thinking he was avoiding her, only to find out he had been planning ridiculous, romantic ways to get her attention.
She rolled onto her back, staring up at the ceiling with a small smile. "You're insane."
Klaus grinned. "Maybe. But it worked, didn't it?"
Alex huffed out a laugh, shaking her head. "Yeah… I guess it did."
A comfortable silence settled between them. No tension, no uncertainty—just the two of them, lying side by side, knowing that no matter what happened next, this was far from over.
Alex turned her head to look at him, a playful glint in her eyes. "Why don't you sing the song then?"
Klaus raised an eyebrow. "Right now?"
She nodded, smirking. "You went through all that trouble to write it, didn't you? I think I deserve to hear it."
Klaus exhaled dramatically, running a hand through his hair. "You just want to see if I can actually sing, don't you?"
Alex shrugged. "Maybe."
Klaus sighed, sitting up. "Alright, but don't judge too harshly. I'm not a professional."
Alex rolled her eyes. "Just sing, Klaus."
He cleared his throat, then started softly, his voice deep and smooth.
"I tried to write a thousand words, but none could say enough...
Your laugh is like a melody, your touch a spark of love.
I look at you and wonder how the stars don't dim in shame,
Because even in a crowded room, I only know your name.
Your eyes, they speak of stories, untold mysteries they hold,
Like an endless ocean, your gaze pulls me, so bold.
And every moment near you, I forget the world around,
A melody of feelings in a place where I'm unbound.
I want to hold you closer, yet we drift, afraid to fall,
But every time I think of you, I can't help but give my all.
The distance keeps me wanting, a hunger I can't deny,
But I'm here, waiting patiently, for you to hear my sigh."
Alex's playful expression slowly faded as she listened. His voice was surprisingly good, warm and steady, with just the right amount of roughness to make her chest tighten.
Klaus watched her reaction as he finished the verse, then smirked. "So? Do I pass?"
Alex blinked, trying to hide how flustered she felt. "That was… actually really good."
Klaus grinned. "You sound surprised."
She crossed her arms. "I just didn't expect you to be able to sing and be annoyingly smooth at the same time."
He leaned in slightly. "So, does that mean I impressed you?"
Alex scoffed, pushing his face away. "Don't get cocky."
Klaus chuckled. "Too late."
She shook her head, but she couldn't stop the smile on her face. Maybe waiting and taking things slow wasn't such a bad idea after all.
Then Alex said" How do we start this friendship?
Klaus chuckled softly, still savoring the moment. "I guess it starts with getting to know each other beyond the teasing and the flirting." He tilted his head slightly, his gaze softening. "We could talk more, see where things go, but no more rushing into anything."
Alex raised an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued. "So, we're going to take it slow, huh? No more songs or impromptu confessions?"
He grinned. "Only if you don't mind a few more surprises. But yes, let's start slow. No pressure, no expectations. Just... us getting to know each other as people, without all the games."
She smiled, feeling the weight of his words sink in. "That sounds... nice."
Klaus's gaze lingered on her for a moment, a soft warmth in his eyes. "And who knows, maybe we'll figure out that we're meant to be friends first... or maybe something more."
Alex couldn't help but laugh. "You're impossible, Klaus."
He leaned back, teasing her once again. "You love it."
She rolled her eyes, but there was a smile tugging at her lips. "I guess I do."
"Then we'll take it from here," Klaus said, a playful but sincere glint in his eye. "No rush. Just us."
