Prodigy In Modern Family

Chapter 13: Rock On

Alex walked through the school corridor, enjoying the rare free period she had. She wasn't in the mood to sit around doing nothing, so she decided to look for a certain someone. As she wandered past the music room, she heard the distinct sound of an electric guitar. Curious, she peeked inside and found Klaus sitting alone, completely immersed in his playing.

She watched for a few seconds before stepping inside unnoticed. "So this is your famous guitar skill," she said. "I must say, I'm impressed… even though I have no idea what you're playing."

Hearing her voice, Klaus gasped dramatically, stopping mid-song. "You've got to be kidding me! You don't know what I'm playing?" He clutched his chest like she had just insulted his entire existence. "Oh god, Alex, this is unacceptable. This—" he gestured to his guitar, "—is Sweet Child O' Mine by Guns N' Roses! How can you not know this?"

Alex chuckled. "Well, excuse me for not being a rock expert."

Klaus sighed in exaggerated disappointment before motioning for her to sit next to him. "Come, sit. I'm officially taking charge of your musical education. I swear, how can someone not know Guns N' Roses?"

As she sat beside him, Klaus launched into a passionate rant about the greatest rock bands of all time. He spoke animatedly about Queen, The Rolling Stones,AC/DC,Metallica, and Led Zeppelin, his face lighting up with excitement.

Alex couldn't help but smile at the childlike enthusiasm in his voice. He looked so genuinely happy, completely lost in his world of music. It was a side of him she hadn't seen before—unguarded and passionate.

Then, as if realizing something, Klaus suddenly turned to her. "Wait a minute—you once told me you were in the school band, but you never told me what you play."

Alex smirked. "I play the cello."

Klaus stared at her like she had just spoken another language. "What the fuck is that thing?"

Alex burst into laughter. "Oh my god, Klaus. Are you serious?"

"I'm dead serious," he said, still looking at her with wide eyes. "A cello? That sounds like something old people listen to while drinking expensive wine."

Alex rolled her eyes. "It's a classical instrument, you uncultured rockhead. It's like a bigger violin, but it has a deeper sound. Ever heard of Yo-Yo Ma?"

Klaus scoffed. "No, but that name sounds fake."

She playfully smacked his arm. "You're impossible."

Klaus smirked. "Alright, fine. Since you're all fancy with your cello, you're gonna have to play for me someday. But fair warning—if it puts me to sleep, I'm never letting you live it down."

Alex smirked back. "Deal. But only if you play me some Guns N' Roses first."

Klaus picked up his guitar and strummed a few chords. "Sweetheart, you're in for a treat."

Minutes later

Klaus put the guitar down, wiping his hands on his jeans. He looked over at Alex with a grin, clearly pleased with the mini concert he had just given her. "Okay, I played for you. Now, tell me something about you, something that's related to music."

Alex tilted her head slightly, narrowing her eyes. "Are you blackmailing me now?" she asked with a smirk.

Klaus laughed, shaking his head. "No, no. I just can't ask you to play the cello for me. It looks like a giant violin, and I absolutely hate violins." He pulled a face, as though just saying the word "violin" left a bad taste in his mouth.

Alex rolled her eyes at his antics but couldn't help the small chuckle that escaped her. "Okay, fine. But this stays between us," she said, her tone suddenly more serious.

Klaus raised an eyebrow. "What's this? Secrets?"

She took a deep breath, her expression shifting slightly as she tried to ignore the small flutter of nerves building in her chest. "I can sing," she said quietly, almost as if testing how the words felt.

Klaus's eyes widened. "Wait, what? You can sing?" he repeated, his voice full of surprise. "Why the hell haven't you told me this sooner?"

Alex's cheeks flushed slightly. She shrugged, avoiding his gaze. "I don't know. It's not like I'm a professional or anything. I just... I sing sometimes. In the shower, mostly."

Klaus's smirk returned. "Well, I think you owe me a private performance then, don't you?" His voice was teasing, but there was something in his gaze—something genuine—that made Alex hesitate.

She bit her lip. "Fine, but only if you promise not to laugh."

"I promise," he said, his voice softening. "But you know, I might just fall in love with your voice."

Alex rolled her eyes, but the corners of her lips quirked into a small smile. "You're impossible."

"Come on," Klaus urged, settling back in his chair and crossing his arms. "Let's hear it. No backing out now, Alex."

And so, with a reluctant sigh, Alex cleared her throat, her nerves bubbling up once again. But Klaus's warm, encouraging smile kept her from backing out. She took a deep breath and began to sing softly, her voice quiet but confident. The room seemed to hold its breath as the soft notes flowed from her, the sound of her voice, a mixture of sweetness and vulnerability, filling the space.

Klaus sat back, watching her intently, a genuine admiration in his eyes. It was clear she had more than just a passing talent—there was something raw and beautiful in her voice. As she finished the short song, the silence in the room was almost palpable.

Alex opened her eyes slowly, almost afraid to look at him. "Well?" she asked, her voice soft.

Klaus was staring at her, his usual smirk gone, replaced by something softer. "Well," he repeated, as if he'd been knocked slightly off balance. "You've got an incredible voice, Alex. You should sing more often."

Her heart skipped a beat, and for a second, she felt almost embarrassed by his words. She quickly looked down, trying to hide the blush creeping up her neck. "I told you... only in the shower."

"Well, you should think about it," Klaus said with a wink.

Klaus leaned forward, his eyes glinting with excitement as an idea seemed to spark in his mind. "You know," he said, his tone a bit more serious now, "come to my house after school. I've written some songs, but some of them... I think they need a female voice."

Alex raised an eyebrow, curiosity piqued. "You want me to sing for you?"

He shrugged, a playful grin spreading across his face. "Well, I think you'd fit some of the songs perfectly. You've got the range, the tone—everything."

She hesitated for a moment, unsure, but then the idea of being part of something more than just the usual school day made her stomach flip with excitement. "You're serious?"

"Absolutely." Klaus nodded. "I don't just ask anyone to help with my music. But you... you've got something."

Alex couldn't help the smile that tugged at her lips. She felt both nervous and excited, her mind racing at the thought of actually singing in a more public way. "Alright, I'll come. But no more teasing, Klaus. You have to make sure it's worth my time."

He laughed, a deep, genuine sound that made her heart skip a beat. "I promise it will be. I'll make sure you don't regret it."

"Fine, but I'm holding you to that," Alex said, her tone playful but with an edge of seriousness.

Klaus leaned back in his chair with a smirk. "Deal. After school then. Be ready to rock."
