Chapter 26: Chapter 025
Chapter 26: When the Avalanche Falls
The night was cool as water.
The weather in December was already a bit cold.
Liu Weimin's stomach started growling, but at this moment, the village secretary and others across from him had already put down their packages, revealing some supplies inside: rice, instant noodles, soda crackers.
But they didn't seem to intend to give Liu Weimin any food. After all, this was the apocalypse, and food was scarce. These people were all waiting for someone else to be generous and give Liu Weimin food, but everyone was counting on others, so no one gave anything.
Liu Weimin also couldn't bring himself to ask them for food.
But he had saved them today, hadn't he? How heartless people had become!
Then he suddenly remembered the road that the village secretary had told them not to go down earlier, and felt vaguely uneasy.
He wanted to go take a look!
So he said to his daughter beside him, "I'm going out for a bit, to check out that road." Looking at the pitch-black night road, a stretch of dark silence, he thought for a moment and said, "I'm not sure what the situation is over there, you wait here for me first."
Liu Huamei heard this and wasn't too happy about it, wanting to go along.
But Liu Weimin persuaded her, saying, "I'll be back soon."
With that, he went out the door of the tile-roofed house. The village secretary, who was eating crackers, saw Liu Weimin's actions and suddenly felt tense.
But Liu Weimin had already gone out, and it was too late to stop him.
The tattooed youth next to him, however, didn't think much of it. Seeing Liu Weimin leave, he suddenly became agitated.
Swaying slightly, he walked up to Liu Huamei, leaned against the doorframe with one hand, and said, "Beautiful lady, are you scared? Want to come into big brother's warm embrace?" His tone was full of mockery.
Liu Huamei looked at this person with disgust, not saying anything, just taking a few steps to the side.
But this retreat only made the tattooed youth more excited. He started pulling on Liu Huamei's arm. The few youths nearby saw this scene and began teasing and egging him on, also gathering around.
Just then, the village secretary ran over, patted the tattooed youth, and said in a low voice, "What time is it for playing around? Those few women you played to death are still outside! That police officer has already gone out! When he sees the bodies and comes back, he'll definitely cause trouble. Think about what to do!"
Hearing this, the tattooed youth instantly lost all interest, his gaze turning murky as he looked towards the door, then at Liu Huamei who had retreated to the edge of the doorway.
Liu Huamei was standing quite far away and couldn't hear clearly what they were saying, but she vaguely heard the word "bodies". And through her interactions with them along the way, she also felt that this group of people were not good people.
The village secretary and the tattooed youth exchanged glances with the others, then the tattooed youth made a gesture. Everyone understood, as if they had experience with this before.
Only then did Liu Huamei see the tattooed youth and several others slowly surrounding her. Liu Huamei had just turned to look outside, wanting to see if her father had returned.
Two men took advantage of Liu Huamei turning her head, her attention not on them.
They quickly grabbed Liu Huamei's shoulders. The tattooed youth swiftly snatched the axe from Liu Huamei's hand, while the village secretary tightly covered her mouth, not letting her make a sound.
Liu Huamei knew these people weren't honest, simple farmers, but she never thought they would dare to do this!
How despicable! How dare they!
At this moment, the villagers who had seemed so pitiful at the wall earlier had transformed into vicious wolves!
Liu Huamei struggled desperately, but after all, she was firmly pinned down by several adult men and couldn't break free!
"What about that guy?" the tattooed youth looked towards the door and said quietly.
The village secretary didn't even think about it and said, "Just like before, kill him." Seeming to realize they were short-handed,
he then looked at the dozen or so timid people behind them and said, "Everyone's hands are dirty. If trouble comes, we're all finished! Zhang Tianhe, Tiezhu, you've all used knives before!"
Hearing this, the people behind suddenly changed expressions.
Some remained silent, while others muttered softly, "You forced us to stab them!"
"Hey!" The village secretary sneered, "But didn't you do it? None of us are clean, we're all in the same boat. Heh, I saw you were very eager when dividing up the food!"
Then he said in a muffled voice, "Come help!"
If one person has done bad things, how do you prevent another person from speaking out?
You drag that person down with you!
When an avalanche falls, no snowflake is innocent!
The people in the back hesitated for a while, but eventually came forward to help. Several people took over from the tattooed youth, firmly holding down Liu Huamei so she couldn't make a sound.
The tattooed youth and a few others quietly stood behind the door, preparing to ambush Liu Weimin when he came in.
After Liu Weimin went out, he walked towards that road.
He turned on the multi-function police flashlight he carried and shone it in that direction.
Before he even got there, he could smell a stench mixed with a faint smell of blood from several meters away.
His heart sank, and he quickened his pace.
As the light swept across, the scene that entered his eyes instantly sent a chill through him.
In his many years as a police officer, he had seen his share of things, but this kind of scene was a first for him.
On that road, there was a small ditch on the left side. The small space was filled with human corpses.
These people's faces didn't show signs of turning into zombies. They had died while still human!
Some people's clothes had been stripped off.
There were men, women, and elderly, but the women's clothes were in disarray, obviously having suffered something before death!
And for some of the men's bodies, many had marks of being stabbed with knives!
Not just one stab! The dense knife marks made the corpses unrecognizable!
The bodies had probably been there for several days. The surfaces were already somewhat bloated, with maggots crawling on several heads.
As the light swept across, the scene became clear, and it was extremely nauseating.
Why didn't the village secretary let me come here earlier? What connection did these have to them?
Thinking back to the series of events that happened today, he had already vaguely felt something was wrong with these people.
"Not good!"
Suddenly remembering that Liu Huamei was still in the tile-roofed house, he instantly became anxious.
He hurriedly ran back towards the tile-roofed house, arriving at the door shortly after.
Although he was very worried about his daughter's safety, years of police work had given him some professional composure even in the most critical moments.
He slowly walked over, seeing that the door of the tile-roofed house had been closed, with not a sound coming from inside.
This abnormality seemed to confirm some of his worst thoughts.
He became secretly anxious, while at the same time, a surge of extreme anger welled up from deep within him.
Why!?
The beliefs he had held firm for so many years seemed to collapse like an iceberg!
The faith that had kept him going through countless difficulties,
The passion and fighting spirit that had once filled him with enthusiasm,
The principles he had sworn to defend with his life,
At this moment, they were crumbling!
With this kind of extreme anger, Liu Weimin kicked the door hard, sending it flying inwards.
The few people behind the door were knocked down by the force of the door.
Liu Weimin cautiously peeked in and feinted, then pulled back.
At this moment, a gleaming kitchen knife fell from above on the right side of the door.
It grazed Liu Weimin's face, missing by a hair's breadth. The speed of the knife created a gust of wind.
That was close, fortunately he dodged quickly.
Liu Weimin sidestepped and darted in from the other side of the door.
Just as he steadied himself, the tattooed youth and others surrounded him.
Desperate to save his daughter, Liu Weimin searched the crowd.
He saw his daughter being firmly pinned to the ground by several people. Liu Huamei's big eyes were filled with terror.
The last glimmer of hope in Liu Weimin's heart was completely extinguished!
