Chapter 12: 012: First Hunt
RAAP 12 - First Hunt
Ash cautiously flew closer toward Shanguang's location so as to not spook her. Upon perching on a branch, Ash concealed his aura, becoming one with the tree.
Meanwhile, Shanguang was completely unaware that she was being supervised from above. Not far from her hiding spot, there was a massive Silver Python napping on top of a boulder. Ash couldn't quite understand why she would hunt a prey that was much bigger than her.
However, she looked very confident whilst creeping closer from one bush to another. Once the distance was perfect, Shan Guang charged her claws with Lightning Element and ambushed the sleeping python with no mercy.
Under the moonless sky, Shanguang's abilities flashed brightly. Her [Electric Bite] successfully penetrated Silver Python's tough scales and skin. The Lightning Liger didn't even flinch when the serpent trashed its body around. She dug her claws deep into its skin, tearing the flesh apart with her sharp teeth until she exposed the serpent's spine.
Wasting no time, Shanguang unleashed her [10.000 Volts Charge] to its maximum potential to electrocuted the Silver Python to death.
The Liger's cub panted heavily. She barely had any strength left in her. However, she was proud of herself after doing a feat that she thought was impossible.
"I did it! Father… I did it, I can now hunt on my own…" Shanguang felt her mind was ebbing away. However, a sudden surge of energy rushed through her spine, waking her up in an instant.
"Wake up. The hunt is not over yet. And never will."
Shanguang was surprised upon hearing the familiar mind voice. By the time she turned her head, the graceful figure of a Heavenly Phoenix was in her sight.
"M-master?!"
Thus, Ash said firmly. "Finish your prey. It's not dead yet."
"Yes, Master!"
Stealing her heart, Shanguang offered her prey with one swift bite on its spinal cord. After which, she trotted back toward the Heavenly Phoenix.
"Master, I did it!" She said, standing proud on all four. Waiting to be rewarded with praises. "What do you think of my hunting skill? Am I worthy to be your disciple?"
"I'd give you an F. Foolish!" Ash said without batting an eye to her feelings.
"Eehhh?!"
"Xiao Shan." Ash lowered his strict tone into a gentle and caring one. "What makes us different compared to regular beasts?"
The little Lightning Liger was askew. "Ermm, our strength and ability."
Ash pointed the tip of her wing's feather onto her forehead, and thus he said. "The answer is our intelligence that makes us sentient beings. What you did a moment ago was an utter fool's doing. Hunting is not just about killing your prey, but also to survive the fight! If you exhaust yourself to death, what's the point of the hunt after all?"
Acknowledging her mistake and negligence during the fight, Shanguang looked down apologetically.
"I am sorry, Master."
Instead of giving another earful scolding, Ash gave her a gentle head pat.
"However, I would give you an S for your bravery and virtue. You did well, Xiao Shan."
Shanguang's eyes rounded wide, tears began to flow on her cheek. "En! Thank you, Master! I will be careful next time!"
Ash nodded. "Let's dispatch its body and harvest for what you need."
"Got it!"
The Liger cub began with dissecting the serpent's stomach, looking for the liver, kidneys, and the heart which has the highest protein value. Ash was quite astonished by the amount of food that she devoured despite her small stature.
Done with her share, Shanguang opted to behead the snake's head and offered it to him. "This is my tribute, Master. Please accept it!"
Ash couldn't say no to her plea. He accepted the tribute wholeheartedly. He then pecked the snake's skull to eat the brains which were rich in protein and fat.
Shanguang was eating with gusto until she couldn't stuff any more meat. She burped in satisfaction when she was done.
"Fyuh! I am full!" She said, laying on her belly and purring like a kitten. "I will dismember the carcass later. I'm so… sleepy."
"Sleeping after dinner is not—" Before he could finish, the little Liger was already soundly asleep with a full belly.
"She really can't be helped." Ash shook his head. "Now, what should I do with this pile of meat?"
Eating raw and fresh game meats was no longer an issue for Ash. However, eating slightly aged, mouldy meat was not an option for him. In order to preserve the meat, Ash decided to make a bonfire to cook the meat and store the rest inside the Storage Ring.
It was a bit hard to make a fire with his current physiology since he only had four talons on each leg which were not as dextrous as a human's hands. Nevertheless, his talon was sharp and tough like a steel sword and he managed to skewer the meat with a pole and put it on Y-shaped branches that he planted on the ground to rest the skewer on.
"Now, I need to make a fire…"
After piling up firewood that he gathered from the surrounding, Ash scratched his talon against a rock to create a spark. It took him a few tries until it finally caught the kindling on fire.
He immediately feels nostalgic when his gaze landed on the flickering flames.
Awakened by the smoky smell, Shanguang jolted in panic.
"Master, master! There is fire!" Shanguang roared.
Ash swooped down from his resting place to calm her down.
"I made that fire." He said.
"You did?!" Shanguang looked at him with rounded eyes. "I thought, only dragons and other Fire Elemental Beasts could make a fire with their abilities. Master, you are so amazing!"
"Let's not exaggerate. Besides, it only took me a few scratches on a stone to create some sparks, and there you have it. A fire."
"Making fire with just a few scratches on a piece of stone?! How?! Please teach me, Master!"
Ash was lost for words. He overlooked the fact that Immortal Beast in general was lacking in common sense and could only comprehend a few things that had already been recorded in their basic instincts.
'Seems like I need to teach her the history of human and their advancements in civilization from the ground up.'
