Chapter 53 - 54 Where Can You Go with a Child?

Chapter 53: Chapter 54 Where Can You Go with a Child?

“Talk less, do more.”

“Haven’t I done enough already? I…”

Yan Ze felt he was being treated most unjustly. It was he who had sent people to strengthen patrols and watch over Anji Hall, and when there was the slightest disturbance, he was the first to arrive!

“Be cautious in your words and actions.” Pei Huaian’s rebuke left Yan Ze without the desire to say another word.

Pei Huaian glanced at the disgruntled man and rarely offered words of comfort, “Miss Shao is cold by nature. No matter how much you ask, she doesn’t want to bother with you. I’m worried you’ll be unable to save face.”

What he meant was, “I’m doing this for your own good, to spare you the embarrassment.”

Shao He, observing their interaction, guessed that their relationship was out of the ordinary. Then she considered that now Old Madam Chu knew of her and the child’s presence in Anji Hall, she wouldn’t let matters rest.

There would surely be many more occasions when she would need Yan Ze’s help, so naturally, she should treat him more kindly. She then said, “It’s not that it’s inconvenient to say, but my master is an obscure figure whose name you wouldn’t recognize even if I told you.”

Pei Huaian looked at Shao He with surprise, not expecting her to respond.

Yan Ze, pleased with himself, looked towards the person full of astonishment as a smile slowly spread across his lips.

Pei Huaian, reminded of when he first encountered Shao He at Mass Burial Mound, knew she hadn’t been so amiable with him. Instead, she faced him with cold eyes, fearful he would harm her.

A bit uncomfortable, Pei Huaian clenched his fist and brought it to his mouth, coughing lightly to interrupt their conversation.

“Ahem, I believe Master Yan has important matters to attend to, should you not hurry along?”

Yan Ze frowned in confusion. What business was he unaware of?

“It appears Master Yan has a poor memory—the Court of Judicial Review still has cases waiting for you.”

Hearing the hint to dismiss him after being used, Yan Ze, under the chill gaze, didn’t dare to continue the conversation and could only say to Shao He with a smile, “I have urgent matters to attend to and hope to have the chance to chat with Miss another time.”

“I see Master Yan is quite busy; I fear it may be quite a while before you can find the time.” Pei Huaian’s warning gaze flicked over.

Yan Ze shrugged, “Even when busy, there’s time for rest. Farewell.”

He truly feared that one more second under that icy stare might pierce him through.

Shao He’s gaze shifted to Pei Huaian, advising, “You are at a critical point in your treatment. It’s best not to be away for too long, or the cold poison might recur, and previous efforts would be wasted.”

“Alright.” Pei Huaian looked at her face and felt his irritation soothed.

At that moment, a servant boy outside suddenly called, “Doctor Shao, there is a patient outside who needs your treatment.”

“I understand, I’ll be right there.”

Shao He looked at Pei Huaian, suggesting he rest here for a moment longer.

Pei Huaian entered the side room where Qingxia was entertaining Xiao Linzhang, with Qing Shan standing by and watching.

Hearing the door open, both of them turned their heads simultaneously, a wary look flashing through their eyes.

On recognizing the visitor, both of them bowed respectfully, “Master, what brings you here?”

“Has anything happened recently?”

Pei Huaian approached the bedside and picked up Xiao Linzhang, looking down at him with tender eyes.

Qingxia reported recent events while Qing Shan added, “Miss wishes to rent or purchase an estate.”

Pei Huaian was silent for a moment, staring at the child in his arms. He instructed, “Protect your mistress and the young master well. You know the consequences should anything go wrong.”

“Yes,” both Qingxia and Qing Shan bowed in acknowledgment.

Xiao Linzhang grabbed his finger tightly, and feelings of fulfillment washed over Pei Huaian as he looked at the soft child.

“Master, I have something to report,” called Ah Mo from outside the door.

“Come in.”

Ah Mo entered the room, nearly tripping at the sight of his tender-hearted master, which frightened him more than usual.

“What is it?” Pei Huaian asked, his tone displeased.

Ah Mo collected himself and stepped forward, “Master, Princess Ninghe has arrived and is waiting in the mansion for you.”

Pei Huaian intended to spend more time with the child, but out of necessity, he put her down and left.

Princess Ninghe was haughty and overbearing; should she have to wait too long, there was no telling what she might do, potentially causing even more trouble.

Before departing, Pei Huaian told Ah Mo, “Contact the estate broker and see to it that he sells the small estate next to the one in the north of the city to Shao He.”

“Master, this…” Ah Mo felt that something was very wrong. The master’s behavior could no longer be described as unusual.

Who exactly was this Doctor Shao, to compel the master to go to such lengths?

“Do as I say,” Pei Huaian’s cool voice came through.

“Yes, Master,” Ah Mo bowed his head, realizing he had overstepped. The matters of their master were not for them servants to speculate about.

Worried that Old Madam Chu would not rest, Shao He requested leave from Yun Qian after he returned with the medicinal materials.

“Young Master Yun, I would like to take a day off tomorrow to look at some estates with the estate broker,” she said.

Yun Qian, having already been informed by Aunt Liu and the servant boy about the events at the clinic, understood why she wished to leave upon his return.

He tried to persuade her to stay, “The Chu Family is aware of your situation and will probably not let matters rest. Staying here might be safer.”

“No, I fear it would be more dangerous if I stayed. I’m well aware of Marquis Pingnan’s typical conduct—they won’t let this go so easily. Staying would only bring trouble to you.”

Shao He didn’t want to trouble Yun Qian any further. She owed this man too much. Moreover, staying here long-term was not a solution.

“Where can you and the child go if you’re on your own? What will you do if something happens?” Yun Qian didn’t agree with her leaving now and voiced his concerns.

“Qingxia and Qing Shan are highly skilled in martial arts. Besides, I will still come here during the day to see patients. In this way, Old Madam Chu won’t know where the child is, nor be able to make a move,” Shao He explained.

Understanding his kindness, Shao He had already made up her mind to leave after Old Madam Chu’s interference.
