Chapter 93: Volume 1: Chapter 94 - What Do You Take My Life For?
Though it was the peak of summer, the old man's voice was like a cold wind in the dead of winter, causing the temperature inside the cave to drop by several degrees.
It was a long while before Aoko seemed to snap out of the old man's words. Her fine brows furrowed, and she stared at the old man with a completely uncomprehending expression.
"I say, have you gone senile from sleep, old man? Wasn't it decided from the very beginning that Big Sis would inherit the Magic? What's the meaning of changing your mind now? Besides, I have no intention of becoming a magus. If you're talking in your sleep, then wait until you wake up."
Rejecting the old man's proposal without any politeness, Aoko couldn't help but feel that her grandfather might have really gone senile to say such things at a time like this.
"Let's go, Big Sis. Rin is still waiting for us to go back and cut the cake. Don't mind what this old geezer just said."
Aoko subconsciously tugged on Touko's sleeve, but found that she didn't budge. She spoke with some concern.
"You're not taking the old man's words seriously, are you, Big Sis? I told you, just ignore him."
However, Touko did not respond to Aoko's words. She just kept her head slightly bowed. A moment later, she lifted her expressionless pretty face, which now had a somewhat sinister feel to it. Her eyes, cold as ice, stared at the old man as she asked.
"Are you serious?"
"I am."
The old man nodded, as if he had already made up his mind. After saying this, he closed his eyes again.
Touko took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. But no matter how she suppressed the emotions in her heart, an uncontrollable anger still boiled in her mind.
She subconsciously clenched her fists, and as if through gritted teeth, words trembled from her lips.
"Fine. Very good..."
"Big Sis..."
Sensing that Touko's emotions were a little out of control, Aoko was just about to tell her not to mind the old man's senile behavior—after all, she would never follow his words and choose to inherit the Magic—but Touko's anger erupted first.
"I'm asking you, what do you take my life for, you stinky old geezer!? You were the one who said the Aozaki family needed someone to inherit the Magic, which is why you made me stay in the workshop studying magecraft all this time! But now you're telling me I don't even have the qualification! Why didn't you make that clear from the beginning, why wait until now!? Do you think I'm your toy? That my life is something you can just play with as you please, you bastard!? You tell me, what am I supposed to do now!?"
Having never seen her older sister in such a thunderous rage, Aoko was stunned for a moment by Touko's aura, standing frozen on the spot, unable to say a word.
To be honest, she couldn't imagine how intense the anger in Touko's heart must be at this moment. But just seeing the girl, who had always presented herself with a reliable and elegant image, now in such a state of fury was enough to catch a glimpse of the pain in her heart.
After all, for one's life's goal to be completely negated after so many years of hard work, the fact that she hadn't had a direct mental breakdown was already a testament to the girl's strength.
Faced with Touko's stern questioning and reprimand, the expression on the old man's face did not change at all. He didn't even lift his eyelids, just answered faintly.
"You can continue to work hard as a magus, just not as a Magician, like in the past. Or, you can try to become a normal person."
"A normal person... Heh, you're telling me to be a normal person..."
As if amused by the old man's words, Touko panted heavily, her body trembling slightly. She staggered back two steps and let out a self-deprecating laugh, a hint of killing intent now in her cold gaze as she looked at the old man.
"At this point, you want me to live a normal life? Ha... Do you think that's even possible anymore?"
Gritting her teeth tightly, as if holding something back, Touko's fingertips dug fiercely into her palm.
Understanding that the old man before her had no intention of changing his decision, Touko stared at his body as if brewing something, but in the end, she seemed to give up. Her gloomy, pretty face was as cold as frost. After a long while, she finally swung her sleeve and left, her voice icy.
"I will make you regret this, you stinky old geezer."
"Wait, Big Sis! And you, old man... hurry up and take back what you just said!"
Aoko grabbed Touko, who was about to leave, and shouted anxiously at the old man. She knew that if she let Touko go now, the situation might become quite terrible later on.
But Touko just shook off Aoko's hand, her head bowed as she roared.
"Don't come near me, Aoko! And don't you dare follow me!"
"What are you talking about, Big Si—"
Aoko subconsciously wanted to retort, but when she saw the anger, hatred, and a certain unfamiliar coldness in the gaze Touko threw her way, the words immediately got stuck in her throat.
But at that moment, Touko also seemed to realize that she was just taking her anger out on her. She bit her lip, turned her face away, a flash of regret in her eyes, but it was still mostly filled with fury.
She ignored Aoko, who seemed to have been frightened by her gaze, brushed past her directly, and, without even taking the umbrella at her side, quickly left the cave.
And it was only after nearly half a minute after Touko had left that Aoko came back to her senses. She turned her head and questioned the feigning-sleep old man.
"Why did you say that, old man!? Why won't you let Big Sis inherit the Magic!? Her talent is better than mine anyway, and she's worked so hard for so many years, why not just give it to her like before!? Don't tell me you think a normal person like me, who hasn't learned a thing, can do better than her!? Is the Aozaki Magic some kind of cheap, dime-a-dozen thing!?"
Faced with the girl's furious words, the old man rarely spoke up again.
"True Magic is not an existence that relies on talent or aptitude. Of course, you can refuse if you wish. But if something like what happened that other night occurs again, you will only be able to watch that child from the side, unable to change a thing."
Opening his eyelids, his deep eyes seemed to see through the girl's heart. The old man's words were devoid of emotion.
Aoko was stunned for a moment, then she realized what the old man was referring to. Her face turned somewhat unsightly, and as if in disbelief, she looked at the old man and cursed.
"Bastard! Are you using both me and Big Sis as your tools? You just remember this, you stinky old geezer!"
Not wanting to deal with this stubborn old man any longer, Aoko angrily picked up an umbrella, rushed out of the cave, and shouted loudly.
"Big Sis! Big Sis! Touko..."
Amidst the dense rain, Aoko's anxious voice echoed.
And on the mountain path, the black-haired girl let the rain drench her body, her pretty face filled with coldness.
