Reborn in Type-Moon, My Sister is Aoko Aozaki

Chapter 94: Volume 1: Chapter 95 - The Seed of Jealousy

Inside the magus's workshop, Aozaki Rin patiently waited for Aoko and Touko to return. At the same time, he placed the birthday present he had prepared and wrapped earlier to the side, planning to give it to Aoko when she got back.

Alice, sitting on the sofa nearby, noticed the boy's actions after turning a page in her book and asked with some curiosity.

"What are you planning to give to Aoko, Rin?"

"It's a pair of gloves. But I don't know if Sister will like it..."

Although when he was preparing it, he had the idea of keeping the girl warm when winter arrived in a few months, now that it was time to give it, Aozaki Rin felt a little apprehensive.

"With Aoko, she'd probably be happy even if you didn't give her anything..."

Thinking of a certain girl's personality, Alice signaled for the boy not to worry.

However, just as the two were talking, the sound of footsteps with a somewhat suppressed feeling came from the corridor.

—Whoosh.

With a soft sound, the workshop door was slid open from the outside.

Through the outlines provided by his glasses, Aozaki Rin identified who had returned and subconsciously stood up with a smile.

"Welcome back, Sister Touko. Is Sister—"

However, as if sensing the strangeness in the atmosphere, the boy's words stopped midway. After blinking his eyes, he felt that Touko's mood seemed a little unusual and asked with concern.

"Sister Touko, are you okay...?"

Rarely, Touko did not answer immediately. She was drenched from head to toe, her black sailor uniform clinging to her body and outlining her fine curves. Her long hair was slightly disheveled, sticking to her skin from the rain.

Touko seemed to be immersed in some kind of emotion, as if she had returned to the workshop in a daze, seemingly not having heard Aozaki Rin's words at all, her eyes churning with rage and hatred.

"Touko."

Also noticing the abnormality in Touko, Alice's fine brows furrowed slightly, a bad premonition rising in her heart.

Since she had known Touko, she had never seen her in such a state of discomposure.

She was somewhat confused as to why, in such a short time, Touko had become so crestfallen, and why Aoko had not returned with her.

Is it related to the True Magic...

Thinking of the place the Aozaki sisters were heading to when they left earlier, a vague feeling flashed through Alice's heart.

But right now, she hoped more that Touko could quickly return to her usual self. After all, the worry on Aozaki Rin's face was gradually growing heavier.

Hearing Alice's cold yet slightly concerned voice, Touko finally seemed to snap back to her senses. She looked at the boy before her, who seemed to want to ask something but couldn't bring himself to speak out of worry, and understood that she had made him worry.

She forced a smile. She wanted to reach out and stroke Aozaki Rin's head to signal for him not to worry, but seeing that her own hand was still wet, she subconsciously pulled it back.

"It's nothing. My umbrella just got broken by the wind on the way, so I had to come back like this."

"Are you really okay, Sister Touko?"

Sensing that the girl was likely lying, Aozaki Rin reached out and took her hand, looked up, and asked again.

"...Mhm. Don't worry, there are some things I can handle myself."

Her body was a little cold from the rain. Feeling the sole warmth coming from Aozaki Rin's hand, Touko shook her head, pretending not to care.

In truth, on her way back to the workshop, she had been thinking all along about how she should get revenge on her grandfather, how she could reclaim the True Magic.

And even, driven by her emotions due to the old man's words, toward her own little sister, Aoko, she couldn't control the trace of jealousy and annoyance that arose.

Touko knew this was irrational, that it shouldn't be this way, that all the blame should be placed on that willful, stubborn old man. But her heart still couldn't help but reject her own sister. She just wanted to walk away, to get far away from this place that had almost destroyed her life.

But faced with Aozaki Rin's concern, Touko began to hesitate again.

She knew how long the boy had prepared for today's birthday party, how much he had been looking forward to it.

If she were to just leave like this, what would he think?

Disappointment? Sadness? Or would he abandon Aoko's birthday to come and stop her...

Spurred on by the fact that the very thing she had striven for had been so easily given to her sister, a comparative emotion莫名 (mòmíng - inexplicably) rose in Touko's heart.

It was a thought she had never cared about before, one she had kept suppressed deep down, but now it was sprouting like bamboo shoots after the rain, quietly rearing its head.

But just as her thoughts were in turmoil and hesitation filled her eyes, another set of hurried footsteps came from the corridor.

Aoko, half her body drenched by the rain, saw Touko in the room and, panting, subconsciously said.

"Big Sis, you have to calm down first. The old man over there..."

"Aoko, let's talk about that later. For now, let's cut the cake."

Looking at the forced smile on Touko's face, the deeply frowning Aozaki Rin in front of her, and Alice at the side who had clearly noticed something was wrong, Aoko was taken aback for a moment.

After receiving Touko's unspoken message—"Don't tell Rin about this"—Aoko opened her mouth, knowing that her older sister probably didn't want the boy to see her vulnerable side. After a moment's hesitation, she nodded.

After a few seconds, as if she had readjusted her emotions, she looked up and said with a light laugh.

"Y-You're right. Let's not worry about what that senile old man said. Let's just continue with our party. Come on, let's cut the cake!"

The two sisters tacitly ended the cold, hard atmosphere from before. Aozaki Rin wanted to press the matter further, but with Aoko and Touko holding his hands, and Aoko marveling with an expectant tone about what kind of birthday present she was about to receive, he couldn't bring himself to break the mood.

After all, he didn't want Aoko's birthday to be marred by any regrets. He could only wait until this was over to find another opportunity to ask.

Inside the workshop, the oppressive atmosphere that had seemed on the verge of exploding was swept away. With the sound of the boy's youthful, clear voice singing the birthday song, it became cheerful once more.

But amidst the well-wishes, no matter which of the four it was, their hearts were all filled with complicated feelings.

It was as if they were all coordinating with each other, rehearsing a play.
