Chapter 14: (RBT) Chapter 14: A Distant Relatives' Meeting
Lucifer was greatly surprised.
The last time he had seen Tracy was only a few years ago. At that time, he wasn't much different from how he was during the war, like a young man full of the fire of vitality... but less than ten years had passed, and that same Tracy now looked as withered as a corpse.
If one didn't know them, one might think he had been punched in the eye by some Royal Court lord, or even Teresa. If it weren't for the fact that Tracy was an upright man who devoted his body and soul to the nation and its people, Lucifer would have thought he had found a girlfriend on the side and been squeezed dry.
"Let's stop with the nonsense. The meeting is about to start. Lucifer, and also…"
Tracy spoke halfway and then suddenly froze awkwardly. He turned to look at Ermengarde beside him with a slightly questioning gaze.
"Ermengarde, sir!"
"…Hmm, the envoy from the Liches, I see. Lady Ermengarde, you may follow me."
With that, Tracy squeezed forward, leading Lucifer and Ermengarde towards the meeting room.
In contrast to his face, which looked as if it had been squeezed dry, Tracy's footsteps remained steady and powerful. It wasn't hard to see from the details and his aura that over a hundred years of clerical work had not caused his strength to decline in the slightest.
"Lucifer… who is this person? He looks a lot like Ms. Teresa."
Tracy and Teresa had many similarities… the same pink hair, the same pair of black horns pointing to the sky, and the same qualification to be recognized by the Royal Crown. So much so that some uninformed people couldn't even tell if the two were brother and sister, or sister and brother.
"He's Lady Teresa's little brother, Tracy-kun."
"?…" Tracy whipped his head around to look at Lucifer with suspicion.
Alright… now I know who's been spreading most of those rumors.
"Eh? But I heard that Ms. Teresa only has an older brother?"
"A little brother can grow up to be a big brother, you know—Ah, I'm just kidding, don't mind me, friend."
Lucifer didn't continue teasing, seeing the cold glare directed at him. Tracy then looked away.
Tracy considered himself not very close to Lucifer, but that didn't mean their relationship was bad. After all, they were comrades-in-arms who had fought side-by-side in difficult times. Moreover, compared to the Blood Demon Overlord, who was both sharp-tongued and cruel-hearted, Lucifer was much easier for someone like him to get along with.
However, he didn't know why, but it seemed Lucifer always tried to avoid the internal affairs of the Royal Court and Kazdel. If it weren't for a direct order from Teresa or the Blood Demon Overlord, Lucifer would resolutely refuse to even set foot in this place… He feared that for this meeting, he was undoubtedly dragged here by force by the Blood Demon Overlord.
I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing…
After walking through a few corridors, Tracy brought Lucifer and Ermengarde to the meeting room, also known as the War Council.
The meeting room was spacious but remarkably simple, with only a round table and a few chairs. On the table were just a few cups of tea. And before they arrived, three lords of the Royal Courts were already waiting.
"Ah… we meet again, Lucifer. And welcome, Ms. Special Envoy from the Liches."
As the most approachable of the Royal Court lords, Laqeramaline greeted Lucifer and Ermengarde and invited them to sit down like a kind older sister.
In contrast, the negative example, the Blood Demon Overlord, just snorted contemptuously and then closed his eyes to rest. As for the King of the Corpse Eaters, he uttered no words, as if he were a background NPC.
The three representatives of the Royal Courts were gathered together… one of the few moments the Sarkaz race could be called "united."
"The Demon King will arrive shortly. I ask for your patience."
Tracy found a chair and sat down, awaiting Teresa's arrival. The Blood Demon Overlord and the King of the Corpse Eaters said nothing, but Laqeramaline pulled Ermengarde, who was next to her, into a conversation.
"My, my, are Liches so young these days? How is life in Leithania?"
"Uh… well…"
This was a little different from the situation Ermengarde had imagined. The War Council, representing the Royal Court and the Demon King, should be an extremely solemn place. She, who was only here to listen, shouldn't be able to interrupt with even a single word… but what was this atmosphere, like sitting around and gossiping with distant relatives back home?!
"Hmm… is Fleamont that strict? I remember his personality being quite peculiar."
"His personality is terrible! That old man is super selfish!"
When the topic turned to Fleamont, Ermengarde instantly perked up. The little Lich girl immediately opened up, venting all the hardships of being used by Fleamont to the Banshee who was many years her senior without holding back. Her ability to change expressions was faster than a Sichuan opera performer changing masks; even Laqeramaline couldn't keep up for a moment.
Perhaps because Ermengarde's complaining was a bit loud, the Blood Demon Overlord opened his eyes with displeasure. But upon hearing her endlessly slander Fleamont, he closed his eyes again in satisfaction.
Seeing the Blood Demon Overlord's satisfaction, the King of the Corpse Eaters couldn't help but trip him up a bit (he must really hold a grudge). He moved closer to Lucifer and mused in a perfectly audible voice:
"Youngster Lucifer… that red wine you said even Ducale recommended last time really was good. I never thought his taste in food was still usable. I thought that man's taste would have deteriorated to a pathetic state, just like his ideas."
"…"
The King of the Corpse Eaters' words had clearly triggered the Blood Demon Overlord's "keyword." The Overlord, who had been AFK, instantly opened his blood-red eyes and glared at the King.
"Nezzalem… you self-proclaimed God of War of the Sarkaz. Have these thousands of years finally made your brain decay?"
"I think my mind is still quite clear. Unlike someone whose position doesn't go up, and it wouldn't be strange if it went down, who likes to act like a whining child… how pathetic."
Listening to the verbal sparring between the King of the Corpse Eaters and the Blood Demon Overlord, Lucifer quietly shifted closer to Tracy. Damn it… the King's verbal skills are worthy of being the oldest Sarkaz next to the Shapeshifters. That attack power is truly vicious!
"I was just chatting with the younger generation, Ducale… what are you getting so worked up about?"
"Me, worked up? I think my tolerance is quite high… This is just a stereotype against Blood Demons. Or are you discriminating against my Sarkaz race?"
"Not at all. I'm just discriminating against you."
The clash between the King of the Corpse Eaters and the Blood Demon Overlord made the conversation between Laqeramaline and Ermengarde come to a halt. Fortunately, no matter how fierce their verbal sparring became, they still had no intention of coming to blows. Perhaps the Blood Demon Overlord knew well that if he made a move, Laqeramaline and Tracy would definitely side with the King. As for Ermengarde, she didn't count. And as for Lucifer… he'd probably grab Ermengarde and flee at the speed of light.
"Let's end this pointless chatter here, gentlemen… the Demon King has arrived."
Seeing that the Blood Demon Overlord and the King of the Corpse Eaters were about to enter phase two, Tracy cleared his throat lightly to interrupt them. As he spoke, the meeting room door was pushed open once more… at last, Teresa had arrived at this battlefield without smoke or fire.
"Sorry for being late! I happened to oversleep a bit during my nap, hehe… You all look like you're having a fun chat. I wonder if I could join in?"
"..." Tracy, who had just stood up and was about to sit down, almost fell off his chair after hearing his little sister's sentence.
Truly worthy of Lady Teresa. Just by opening her mouth, she almost made her older brother, Tracy, lose his composure…
