Chapter 45
“Alright, I’m counting on you!”
Thomas gave instructions to the party members on either side, and a man and a woman from the vanguard stepped forward to block the golems charging from both directions.
“One of you in the rear, support us with magic. The other, cover with your bow. The last person, protect Erik.”
“”Yes, sir!””
Responding to Thomas’s orders, the team sprang into action immediately.
The female mage raised her staff and cast a water spell at one of the golems, hitting its right arm.
Seizing the opportunity, Thomas rushed forward and struck the golem’s wet arm with his mace. With a dull cracking sound, the golem’s right arm fell off.
Blunt weapons were particularly effective against earth-elemental golems.
Meanwhile, the male archer in the back fired a volley of arrows at the golem attacking the female warrior, striking its chest.
The golem staggered for a brief moment, leaving an opening.
The female warrior raised her battle axe high, then brought it down with all her strength.
The massive weapon struck the golem from the crown of its head, carving deep into its torso before stopping at its chest.
As she quickly retreated, the mage followed up with another water spell.
That final attack proved to be the breaking point—crumbling away, the golem disintegrated, leaving only its magic core behind.
With the tide of battle fully in their favor, the mage turned her support to the male warrior, while the female warrior rushed over to assist Thomas.
From there, it was over in an instant.
Without suffering a single injury, they took down all three golems with ease.
“Whew… That’s that.”
“Great work, everyone.”
As Thomas wiped the sweat from his brow and returned, I greeted him.
“Erik, weren’t you scared?”
“Not at all. You all defeated them so quickly that I didn’t even have time to be scared. I’m honestly impressed—this is a Rank IV dungeon, after all.”
Right now, I was accompanying “Silver Shield” in a Rank IV dungeon as their porter.
And, of course, the reason for that was to obtain a dungeon core.
Typically, fledgling adventurers and students enrolled in academy training aren’t allowed to challenge high-rank dungeons until they graduate.
But that system creates problems—some people rely on dungeon expeditions to pay for tuition, while others need practical training but have no means of acquiring it.
To address that, the guild allows those without proper exploration qualifications to work as porters.
Before coming here, I had instructed Eve to prepare a decently large space within The World and to surround it with walls so that its interior couldn’t be seen.
Thanks to that setup, my blessing appeared to be nothing more than an “Item Box,” allowing me to take on Thomas’s request.
『But Master, if you let them clear the dungeon like this, won’t the core belong to them?』
Eve had a point.
As a mere porter, I wasn’t entitled to any major rewards. While I wasn’t expected to fight, my pay was also relatively low.
The porter system was originally established so that veteran explorers could bring along rookies, allowing them to gain firsthand experience by observing real battles.
Newcomers would watch their seniors fight, learn from their techniques, and apply those lessons when tackling lower-rank dungeons.
That’s why the payment was considered more of a bonus, and most aspiring adventurers started out as porters.
(Don’t worry, I’ve got a plan for that.)
Hearing my response, Eve grew suspicious.
『Wait… Are you planning to steal the core after they obtain it?』
(Of course not! What do you take me for?)
I inwardly rolled my eyes at Eve’s joke.
But then, a thought struck me.
Eve had been showing more emotion lately.
Back when my blessing first manifested, she wasn’t the type to crack jokes like this.
Could it be that she was growing in some way?
While pondering that, I noticed Thomas and the others starting to move again.
Their post-battle inspection was finished.
『So then, Master, how exactly do you plan to obtain the core?』
Eve’s question came just as I began walking.
(Simple. When they find the core, I’ll offer to buy it at a higher price than the guild would pay.)
I answered with a completely reasonable, legitimate plan.
