Chapter 81
“Oh, found a herd!”
Halfway up the mountain slope, they were there.
The golden wool, visible from the sky, shimmered brilliantly under the sunlight.
“It was worth flying all this way.”
A smile spread across my face at the sight of the rare monsters, the Golden Sheep.
『Shall we slaughter the males for meat and capture the females for their milk and wool?』
Eve made a sudden and rather gruesome proposal.
“We’re not eating them right away, so let’s just catch them for now and send them over.”
With that, I began to descend, lowering my altitude. And then—
“Meeeeehhh!”
As I landed before the herd, the Golden Sheep cried out in alarm at my sudden appearance, warning the others.
“Meh-meh-mehhhh!”
One of them glared at me before charging straight toward me.
『Master, be careful. They’re quite strong.』
“Yeah, I know.”
I had read about them in the monster encyclopedia at the academy’s library.
Golden Sheep might seem weak because adventurers actively hunt them, but they were not to be underestimated.
In reality, they were about C-rank in strength. However, because the rewards for defeating them were so high, adventurers relied on teamwork to bring them down.
“Mehhhh!”
“Whoa, pretty strong.”
Its golden-threaded wool was surprisingly tough, and with its weight behind the charge, an ordinary human would have been sent flying.
“But this much isn’t a problem.”
Thanks to my extensive training and experience, my physical abilities had become quite something. To me, this was no different from a playful puppy pouncing.
“Alright, up you go!”
Lifting the Golden Sheep, I opened the entrance to The World.
“Meeeh! Meeeeeeh!”
I tossed it inside.
“Now I just have to leave the rest to Eve.”
Eve would skillfully guide them through the corridors and into the 【Ranch】.
“Meeeeeeh! Meeeeeeeh!”
As I was thinking this, the remaining Golden Sheep scattered in different directions all at once.
“Hey, wait!”
As expected of wild monsters, they had quickly realized they couldn’t win and decided to flee in separate directions.
However—
“Kaiser, circle around and block their escape.”
“Kweh!”
At my command, Kaiser dove from the sky, cutting off their retreat.
“Meh! Meh-meh!”
With the Crystal Bird in front and me behind, the Golden Sheep trembled in fear.
“Come on now, I’m not going to eat you. Just go inside quietly.”
Whether they understood my words or simply realized they had no way out, the Golden Sheep began moving in the direction I pointed… or rather, Kaiser herded them toward The World’s entrance.
“He’s like a sheepdog.”
Kaiser, being smart, understood my intentions and guided the Golden Sheep inside.
After a while, I had successfully captured all of them. To check on their condition, I returned to The World.
“Look, Master. They’re all calm, aren’t they?”
Inside, Eve greeted me in a shepherd-girl outfit.
“You’re right. I thought they’d be more aggressive. What happened?”
Given that they were C-rank monsters, I had expected them to either resist or panic.
“It’s thanks to that.”
Eve pointed at a pile of hay.
“At first, they were restless, but as soon as they started eating that hay, they suddenly calmed down.”
Could this be another effect of the 【Ranch】?
The hay stack remained untouched no matter how much the Golden Sheep ate.
Once full, they began lying down comfortably in the ranch.
“Twenty-three in total. Since food isn’t an issue, raising them should be easy.”
Golden Sheep were notoriously difficult to capture alive.
This was because they lived on the mountainsides—areas so treacherous that even if one managed to capture them, transporting them back was nearly impossible.
However, capturing them alive had significant benefits. The most valuable being—
“Master, since we have them, let’s try milking one.”
Eve promptly brought a bucket.
“Will this be okay? Won’t they struggle?”
“It’s fine. If they do, I’ll just restrain them by the neck against the wall.”
Ignoring Eve’s rather brutal suggestion, I approached a Golden Sheep.
Surprisingly, it stood still, showing no hostility.
“Alright, easy now. Just gonna milk you a little.”
I spoke gently while placing the bucket underneath and began milking.
The biggest advantage of capturing Golden Sheep was obtaining their milk.
Golden Sheep milk was almost never found on the market.
During hunts, some adventurers might attempt to collect it, but since battles took place on precarious mountainsides, it was an impractical endeavor.
Thus, even when milk was obtained, it was quickly monopolized by nobles and wealthy merchants.
“Mehhh~”
“It’s actually pretty cute like this.”
The Golden Sheep let out a pleased sound, apparently enjoying the milking process.
“Yes, indeed. Obedience is the best trait in any creature.”
Eve nodded in satisfaction.
After a while, the bucket filled with fresh sheep’s milk, and the Golden Sheep peacefully returned to its herd.
“Well, that’s one goal accomplished.”
My main objective this time was to test the 【Ranch】.
Before heading to Astana Island, I wanted to secure a more reliable food supply.
Thanks to the 【Farm】, crops were no problem. The next logical step was livestock.
Knowing that Golden Sheep lived near the mountain range, I had been determined to obtain their superior milk.
With 【Flight】, scouting wasn’t an issue.
And as for capturing them, once they were inside The World, transportation became effortless.
Now, seeing how relaxed they were in the 【Ranch】, it was clear this was an ideal environment for them.
“Master, here’s the sheep milk, low-temperature pasteurized.”
Eve returned, holding a bottle of fresh milk.
Taking a sip—
“Wow, it’s rich and slightly sweet. The smooth texture is incredible.”
This milk would undoubtedly enhance any dish it was used in.
“It was worth the effort, wasn’t it, Master?”
Eve beamed at me.
“Yeah. With this, I can make the finest butter and cheese. My cooking options just expanded.”
Feeling the passion for cooking ignite within me, I realized I’d have to reconsider the kitchen setup in my Room…
