Chapter 79: Between Friendship and Truth [79]
Clark's House – Dawn
Sunlight streamed through the curtains, gently illuminating the living room of Clark's house. In the kitchen, the sound of dishes being arranged mixed with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and sizzling bacon. Diana, already dressed in her casual attire, stood by the counter, watching Tina stir the contents of a frying pan.
"You seem very comfortable in the kitchen, Tina," Diana remarked, leaning slightly against the counter. "Is this something you learned here in Smallville?"
Tina shrugged, flipping the bacon with skill. "Not really. Cooking is a way to distract myself, especially now that I've decided to stop going to school."
Diana frowned, surprised by the statement. "Stopped going to school? Why?"
Tina chuckled nervously, the sound more strained than genuine. "Let's just say my life has taken a few twists in the past few months. School simply stopped being a priority for me."
---
At the table, Clark placed cups and plates as he listened to the conversation. He turned to the two, interrupting their tasks.
"Diana, Tina made that decision for reasons that make sense to her," Clark said calmly. "But that doesn't mean she's given up on everything. She's just seeking another path."
Diana looked at Clark, tilting her head slightly. "I see, but that makes me even more curious. Why do you, Clark, still go to school? From what I've seen, you seem to know far more than any teacher could teach."
Clark gave a faint smile as he pulled out a chair to sit. "It's more complicated than it seems, Diana. I don't go to school just to learn. It's a way to keep my life normal and observe what's happening in Smallville. Plus, my mom insists it's important to keep up appearances."
Diana sat beside him, her eyes gleaming with curiosity. "So it's like an undercover mission? Interesting. But don't you find it exhausting to pretend to be someone you're clearly not?"
Clark crossed his arms, reflecting for a moment before responding. "Sometimes, yes, it's exhausting. But it's also necessary. My presence there allows me to help people in ways they don't even realize. Besides, being in school connects me to the human side of my life."
Tina approached the table, placing a plate of bacon and eggs in front of them. "Clark has this talent for seeing usefulness in everything," she said with a hint of irony. "I, on the other hand, prefer to avoid complications."
---
Diana observed Tina for a moment before turning back to Clark. "And Chloe? Is she still in school too? You mentioned you needed to talk to her yesterday. How did it go?"
Clark hesitated for a moment, picking up his fork and toying with the food on his plate before responding. "It was... complicated. Chloe has a lot to process right now. I told her the truth about me, but she's still trying to figure out how she feels about it."
Diana leaned slightly closer to him, her expression softening. "She seems to be someone important to you. It's good you gave her the time she needs. Some truths aren't easy to accept."
Clark nodded, but there was something in his eyes that suggested the conversation with Chloe still weighed on him.

Smallville High
Clark parked his truck in the school lot, the engine quieting as he watched the activity around him. Chloe stood near the main entrance, talking to Pete and Lana. Chloe's smile seemed more reserved than usual, and Clark knew it had to do with their conversation the night before.
'I need to talk to her,' he thought, stepping out of the vehicle and walking toward the group. Pete was the first to notice his arrival, waving enthusiastically.
"Hey, Clark!" Pete said, leaning against a nearby post. "Finally decided to show up."
Clark gave a faint smile, but his eyes remained fixed on Chloe, who stopped talking to Lana and looked directly at him.
"Chloe," Clark said softly. "Can we talk for a moment?"
Chloe hesitated, her eyes briefly darting to Lana before nodding. "Sure, Clark. What do you want to say?"
"About last night," Clark began, but Lana interrupted, crossing her arms with a curious look.
"There you go again, Clark," Lana said with a half-playful, half-teasing tone. "Can't let Chloe breathe for a second, can you?"
"Lana," Chloe said with a tired smile. "It's fine. He just wants to talk. But... can we save this for later, Clark? I need to sort out a few things with Lana right now."
Clark frowned, feeling a slight frustration but nodded. "Alright, Chloe. We can talk later then."
Chloe gave a brief smile, picking up her bag and pulling Lana toward the school entrance. "See you later, Clark."
Clark watched as they walked away, a mix of relief and concern on his face. He was so lost in thought that he almost didn't notice Pete approaching.
"So, big guy," Pete said, giving Clark a light slap on the shoulder. "What was that about? Trouble with Chloe?"
Clark sighed, crossing his arms as he gazed into the distance. "It's not exactly trouble, Pete. It's complicated."
Pete raised an eyebrow, leaning against Clark's truck. "Clark, the word 'complicated' might as well be your middle name. What's going on this time?"
Clark hesitated, trying to decide how much he could share with Pete without revealing too much. "I told Chloe something important last night. Something that changes a lot. She needs time to process it."
Pete looked at Clark, curiosity shining in his eyes. "Something important, huh? Does this have to do with your big secret?"
Clark shrugged, looking down. "Yeah, it does."
Pete let out a low whistle, shaking his head. "Man, you've got guts. I wouldn't even know what to do if I were in Chloe's shoes. But hey, if anyone can handle it, it's her."
Clark smiled faintly, but his mind was still preoccupied with what lay ahead. "I hope so, Pete. I really do."
Pete gave Clark another pat on the shoulder before walking away. "Come on, big guy. The bell's about to ring. Better not be late."
Clark nodded and began walking toward the school entrance alongside Pete, but he couldn't help glancing over his shoulder at Chloe and Lana, trying to imagine what Chloe was really thinking.

Smallville High – Main Hallway
Chloe and Lana walked side by side through the school hallway, surrounded by the muffled sound of conversations and the occasional clang of lockers being shut. Lana cast a curious glance at Chloe, clearly eager to speak.
"Lana," Chloe began, noticing her persistent look. "If you have something to say, just say it. I know you're holding back."
"Okay, I'll say it," Lana replied, stopping abruptly and crossing her arms. "This is about Clark's girlfriend, isn't it? Diana?"
Chloe took a deep breath, trying to organize her thoughts. "Yes... and no," she replied carefully. "Diana is part of the story, but it's not just about her."
"Part of the story?" Lana raised an eyebrow, irritation starting to creep into her voice. "Chloe, Clark has always been mysterious. He's always had something he didn't want to share. And now, suddenly, he's involved with someone like Diana, who's clearly not just any girl. Doesn't that seem... strange to you?"
Chloe looked away, biting her lip lightly. "Of course it seems strange, Lana. But there are things Clark... just can't share with everyone."
Lana frowned, leaning slightly forward. "And you know what it is, don't you? He told you. That's why you two had that conversation last night."
Chloe hesitated, knowing she couldn't deny it without sounding suspicious. "Yes, he told me some things," she admitted, keeping her tone neutral. "But, Lana, I can't tell you anything. It's not my secret to share."
"Not your secret to share?" Lana repeated, her frustration evident. "Chloe, we're friends. If you know something about Clark, something that could change everything... do you really think it's fair to keep me in the dark?"
"Lana, this isn't about fairness," Chloe replied firmly. "It's about respecting Clark. He trusted me because he thought it was the right time. If he hasn't told you yet, it's because he's not ready. It's not my place to decide."
Lana crossed her arms more tightly, her face flushing with indignation. "So that's it? You know something huge about him, something that probably explains all his mysteries and excuses, but you think I don't deserve to know? After everything I've been through with him?"
"Lana, it's not about who deserves what," Chloe said, trying to stay calm. "I understand you're frustrated, but this isn't a competition. And, honestly, you know how Clark is. He doesn't hide things to hurt anyone. He does it because he thinks he's protecting everyone."
"Protecting everyone?" Lana let out a bitter laugh, shaking her head. "You know what it feels like to me, Chloe? It feels like you're taking his side because he gave you something he never gave me: trust."
Chloe stared at Lana, surprised by the accusation. "That's not it, Lana," she said softly. "I'm not taking sides. I'm just trying to respect his choice."
"Respect his choice?" Lana stepped back, shaking her head in disapproval. "You know what, Chloe? Maybe you're right. Maybe this is between you and Clark. But don't expect me to stick around while you two keep shutting me out."
"Lana, wait," Chloe tried, but Lana was already walking away, her quick footsteps echoing down the hallway. Chloe stood still for a moment, feeling the weight of the confrontation.
