Chapter 5: Eric's Goal
Eric has no idea how much had passed since he walked into the library and starred reading. He had read more than three books so far and he has gotten a whole lot of information.
According to the information he got from the books, he was in a dangerous fantasy world, filled with monsters and fantasy creatures, and races.
The danger wasn't surprising but actually welcomed by Eric. He has a Revival System, without danger, how can he die, revive and grow stronger?
From what he got from the books, nearly every single desired fantasy race exists in this world. Dragons, Elves, Dwarves, Beastkins, and even Demon—though they never live the demon realm.
These races live very far away from human settlements, in their own territories or realms, as they called.
As for the monsters or Mana Beasts as they are called here? They are more like unique mutation variants of wild animals back on Earth. Except that they are extremely dangerous.
Then there's the human settlements. There are two kinds—the Barbarians and people like him who are part of a kingdom.
According to the information he got, Skyrend Kingdom is part of five kingdoms system that makes up the Vaelora Empire.
As for the Skyrend Kingdom? It's extremely old, like Millennials old. It was founded by a 9★ Knight, Skyrend. And since then, his family has ruled it.
And obviously, there's an aristocratic system in the Kingdom and these Noble Houses with titles help the Royal Family to rule it.
As for Eric new family, the Stormrider Noble House? It's a newly established Barony. It was Noble Title that was conferred by the current King upon his father, a Knight—an 8★ existence.
"Wow... That's..." Eric was speechless for a while when he saw this.
According to the information he got from the books he read, an Knight is an existence that can easily take down an entire army by himself. No matter the size of the army huge or small, they are no match for a Knight.
It kind of made him curious as to why the Noble House fell and the whereabouts of his father. And his mother, a 7★ Mage.
The power system of these world isn't too complicated as everything uses the Star Ranking system; 1★ to 10★.
Everything and everyone starts at 1★, then goes up the ranking as they increases their strength.
For humans, 1★ is no different from a normal human back on Earth. Except maybe stronger.
But those at this level are considered trash, as the average level of humans is 3★. Those below this rank are either commoner or those without talent, like the original Eric.
To increase their powers, humans absorbs the Mana from their surroundings or from monster cores.
But it's slightly easier for everyone to absorb Mana from monster cores than from their surroundings.
Eric was curious about something when he saw this and he decided to ask the system.
"System, can I also absorb Mana from the surroundings and monster cores?"
[Yes, Host. But it will be extremely difficult to increase your strength with it. Your potential determines the rate at which you can absorb Mana to increase your strength and your capped limit. With your potential, the highest you can achieve is 2★. And it's only through extreme difficulty.]
"Hmm, but I can increase my potential, right?"
[No, Host. But you don't have to worry about something so minimal and restrictive as potential. It doesn't apply to you as you can easily increase your strength however you wish.]
"Yeah. About that... The rewards upon death. Is there a limit to it or do I receive reward every time I die?" He asked.
He was actually curious about this. He has a feeling that there will be a limit to how many times he can be rewarded from dying.
[Yes. There's a limit, Host. You will receive varying rewards for the first ten time.]
"I thought as much. I really want to test it out and see. I wonder if suicide works... Or does it?" He said to himself.
[...]
"I guess I will have to look for someone to kill me then. Seems like I will have to start courting death or better yet, go hunting in the Luminveil Forest," he muttered to himself.
"Young Master, did you just say that you will go to the Luminveil Forest?" Alice's familiar voice echoed beside him, startling Eric.
He turned to look at his side and he saw her standing there with the same worried expression on her face.
He had been so focused in his own thoughts and digesting what he has read that he had failed to notice her presence.
"Alice, you're back," he said, as he stood up from the floor.
Alice reached out and held the helm of his shirt, with her eyes becoming moist.
"Young Master, please don't tell me that you're trying to kill yourself again after miraculously surviving. Don't you know what kind of place that forest?"
Luminveil Forest is a forest that's south to the Skyrend Kingdom and it's filled with all kinds of dangerous monsters and races.
It's a very mysterious and extremely dangerous place as no one knows the depth of it or the types of monsters inside. It's said that the forest spans the whole Empire and even out into the lands of the Barbarians.
As far anyone knows, only the exterior of it has been explored over the years and that has always has been at great cost.
"Of course, I know what type of place it is," Eric replied.
"Then why do you want to go there, Young Master?" Alice asked, with a very sad face and tears threatening to fall from her eyes.
"I misspoke. I don't have any intention of going there," Eric said with the best reassuring smile he could muster.
He saw that Alice wasn't convinced and he patted her head, "I promise."
As if it was the word she wanted to hear, Alice immediately cheered up, as a beautiful smile bloomed on her face.
"Young Master, I brought the Healer. Please come so that she can check you," she said.
Eric nodded and Alice led him to the Healer.
As they made their way to where the healer was, Eric's thought drifted to how he's going to live this new life of his.
After experiencing how easy it is to leave everything one has worked for, wealth doesn't feel that much important anymore. But he has a Revival System and death isn't the final stage for him anymore but rather, a means to increase his strength.
In this life, he wants to live comfortably and carefree, but to achieve that, he needs to increase his strength to the point that nothing can bother him. He needs absolute strength. Because against it, all forms of trickery are useless.
