Chapter 29: Chapter 17: Secrets Beneath the Stone
It was almost curfew when Harris dragged them down a side hallway on the fourth floor, a flickering torch lighting their path.
Alex glanced around nervously. "You know we're not supposed to be here, right?"
"I know," Harris said, tapping the stone wall beside a faded tapestry with a centaur playing a flute. "But this castle is full of places even the professors don't keep track of."
Summer raised an eyebrow. "And how do you know about them?"
Harris didn't answer at first. His hand pressed against a specific brick near the bottom corner of the wall. With a low rumble, a hidden doorway creaked open, revealing a narrow staircase leading downward, lit by floating blue flames.
Alex's jaw dropped. "You're kidding."
Summer stepped forward slowly. "Is this a real passage?"
"One of many," Harris replied calmly. "Hogwarts has more secret routes than anyone realizes. Most students never find them. A few were used by the Marauders. Others are much older."
Summer turned to face him fully. "Okay, seriously, who are marauders and how do you know about all this? You've only been here a week."
Harris gave a small smile. "I… read a lot. And marauders are a group just like us who explored hogwarts."
That was the truth or close enough. He couldn't exactly tell them he had watched this castle in movies, read about it in books, and memorized the floor plans long before he was ever born here.
To them, he was just Harris Wells: quiet, observant, and a little too clever.
They stepped into the tunnel. The air was cooler here, the scent of dust and ancient stone thick around them. Harris led them down the spiraling path, torchlight following behind.
"This one leads to the base of the Grand Staircase," Harris explained. "Faster than the normal route, and safer during the nighttime. Filch never checks it."
"How do you remember all this?" Alex muttered, awed.
Harris hesitated. "I guess… my mind works differently. Some things stick like glue."
They walked quietly for a while, their footsteps soft on the stone.
Alex finally broke the silence. "So… how many more of these are there?"
"At least seven I'm sure of," Harris replied. "Maybe more. Some are forgotten by time. Some probably don't even open anymore."
Summer looked around thoughtfully. "We should map them. Keep it secret. Just for us."
Alex grinned. "An unofficial trio of Hogwarts explorers?"
"More like a survival network," Harris said. "The castle's beautiful, but it's dangerous. If anything ever goes wrong, these passages could save our lives."
The words hung in the air like a warning.
Neither Summer nor Alex laughed.
They understood. This wasn't just about sneaking out at night.
Harris was preparing for something. Something bigger.
And somehow, they knew they'd be part of it.
