vol. 1 chapter 8 - First job after reincarnation
First job after reincarnation
“Lady Spirits? Why are you in such a panic?”
I called out to the Goddess of Spirits, who had just pulled off the impressive feat of falling on her butt midair. She looked at me like she was seeing something impossible.
“W-Why are you here, Miss Seras…?”
Lady Spirits stammered, eyes trembling with fear.
To explain: despite being a goddess, Lady Spirits is only a mid-ranking deity. Meanwhile, I, though “just” an angel, am directly under one of the highest gods—Creator God Ren. That gives me a lot more freedom and authority in practice.
Technically, gods outrank angels by divine law, so she really doesn’t need to be this scared… but here we are.
“By order of Creator God Ren, I’ve reincarnated into this world to deal with the distortions caused by your failure in management, Lady Spirits.”
“Hiii…! I’m so sorry for causing trouble…!”
“It’s fine. This is just work.”
Honestly, she’s way too scared… I mean, I’m technically below her in rank. She should be a little more composed.
“That aside… Why, exactly, were you trying to show yourself to a human? That’s against the rules set by the Supreme Gods, you know.”
“Ah! Um… that is…”
“Don’t tell me… You broke the rules trying to make up for your mistake?”
“Auuu… That’s exactly what happened…”
*Deep sigh.*
She even flinched at my sigh.
But really, this is a common issue among gods and angels created by higher beings—especially those with maxed-out faith stats. When they mess up, they panic and start digging their own graves.
“Good grief… If you keep doing things like that, one of the Supreme Gods will erase you eventually, you know?”
“Yes… I’m sorry…”
“And also, I told you this last time we worked together…”
I couldn’t help myself—I launched into a lecture, covering old points I’d already given her feedback on.
Another frustrating trait of gods and angels created with blind faith is that they don’t grow. They never question their own capabilities, so when they «N.o.v.e.l.i.g.h.t» fail, they tend to run off in the weirdest directions. And since no one around them dares correct them, they stay stagnant.
After 5 billion years of seeing this same scenario over and over, I’d developed a habit of calling people out, no matter their rank.
“…That’s why, Lady Spirits, all you can do now is not repeat the same mistake. It takes time to regain lost trust, you know?”
“Y-Yes… I’m very sorry…”
“…If you understand that, then I suppose it’s fine. I got a little too heated myself—my apologies.”
Yeah… I definitely let my emotions get ahead of me there. Time to cool it down.
“Anyway, what were you even trying to tell the human? You were going to reveal your form just for that?”
“Um… so…”
Still teary-eyed from the scolding, Lady Spirits began to explain.
Apparently, she wanted to try and recover from her failure by delivering a divine oracle—specifically, a warning about the upcoming disaster in 14 years.
“As you might already know… because of the ‘Divine Phantoms’ in this world, people’s faith in me is really low… Sooo… I thought if I showed myself, they’d take the oracle seriously…”
“Ahh, I see.”
That explains the odd reading I picked up earlier—some non-human entity gathering strange amounts of faith. So that was a Divine Phantom…
“Don’t worry. I’ll handle the world-saving part. If anything else crops up, just reach out.”
“Understood…”
Though there’s still one thing that really bothers me.
“By the way… Were you not informed by the Creator God that I’d be reincarnating into this world?”
“N-Not at all… This is the first I’ve heard of it—from you…”
…Right. So that goddamn Creator really didn’t tell her anything.
Just drop dead already, you damn f*ing god!**
If he’d just passed along the message like he should’ve, this whole mess could’ve been avoided. I swear, once this job’s done, I’m paying him a visit—and not a friendly one.
“Haaah… Alright. I’m heading back to the child I reincarnated into. Please do your best with your own duties too, Lady Spirits.”
“Yes… I’m so sorry to leave this to you, Miss Seras… But I’m counting on you…”
After exchanging goodbyes, I watched as Lady Spirits passed back through the gate and returned. Then I too returned to my new body.
…Well then, let’s start by keeping this fetus and its mother in top health.
