Shadowbound: The Awakened Fool

Chapter 12: Chapter 12 Blue Flame

The sky above Serath Colosseum shimmered with warding sigils twin enchantments layered across the atmosphere like glass domes of spectral color. Beyond the city's outer cliffs, ocean wind howled, brushing across the colosseum's stone spires and thousands of gathered spectators.

Five magical academies had gathered.

Each representing a different region. Each handpicking their ten strongest combatants.

And only one school would walk away with the prize:

Elite government funding for two full years

Artifact research grants and spell archive access

And for the top-ranked individual: a key to the Secret Magic Agent Archive a vault of forbidden and classified techniques.

Inside the arena's central sanctum, the participants stood side by side, lined up before a ring of proctors dressed in deep violet robes, each bearing the seal of the Magisterium.

Elira Dawn stood among the staff gallery behind the Obscured Flame team, her arms folded, eyes focused not on the field…

…but on one man.

Kairo Vale.

The first trial was simple:

Stage Evaluation.

Each contestant would step forward, channel mana into the Assessment Obelisk, and let it determine their stage rank.

Most students stood somewhere between:

Stage 2 – Bound Core

Stage 3 – Elemental Fusion

Only a handful ever touched Stage 4 - Aspect Awakening during school years.

A single crystal stood at the center of the platform tall, thin, carved with concentric runes and three floating rings of light. One by one, students were called.

"Ren Vale."

Kairo's brother stepped forward confidently, adjusting the cuffs of his tailored green dueling coat. Mana surged lightly beneath his skin.

He placed his palm to the crystal.

It pulsed once.

Applause.

Ren turned, grinning.

Freya nodded slightly from her place near the Flame Division.

"Freya Vale."

She stepped forward like fire incarnate, long coat flaring behind her. Her eyes sharp, proud.

The crowd murmured.

Everyone knew her.

She placed her hand on the crystal.

It pulsed brighter.

Gasps followed.

Flame flared lightly across her shoulders in a phoenix shape her aspect trying to manifest.

She pulled it back and walked away without looking at anyone.

Names were called one after another.

Ice users. Earth callers. Lightning duelists. All lining up, testing, passing.

Then

"Kairo Vale."

A hush fell.

He stepped forward in silence. No fanfare. No coat today—just the regulation uniform, modified slightly with reinforced sleeves.

Whispers danced around him.

"That's the dropout."

"He's the one who beat Teyvar Gruln."

"But his affinity… isn't it still unconfirmed?"

The proctor frowned.

"Proceed, student."

Kairo lifted his hand.

Placed it calmly against the stone.

A long pause.

The first pulse came soft.

Then a second brighter.

The third was delayed.

Then the entire obelisk trembled.

The floating rings around the crystal spun faster. The glyphs glowed faintly blue not red, not gold. Blue.

The crowd grew restless.

"What's happening?"

"That's not a normal reading!"

Kairo said nothing.

He let the mana flow. Gently.

Then he twisted his hand and released the blue flame.

It spiraled from his palm, slow and controlled, rising like a gentle firestorm. No heat. No burn. Just a glow deep and haunting.

The obelisk pulsed violently.

Silence.

Then chaos.

"A dual elementalist?!"

"That's a royal-tier trait!"

"Wait he has an unstable aspect already?!"

Freya turned sharply.

Elira's eyes narrowed to slits.

Kairo removed his hand, the flame vanishing instantly.

He turned and walked back to the line.

Someone tried to ask a question.

He didn't answer.

From the judge's box, the High Evaluator stood.

"Obscured Flame Academy will proceed with a full team. Kairo Vale, Freya Vale, and Ren Vale are confirmed primary representatives."

He paused.

Then looked directly at Kairo.

"And student Vale your blue flame has been recorded for Magisterium review."

That evening, in the upper halls of the Colosseum, Elira found Kairo on the balcony overlooking the sea.

"You showed them," she said quietly.

He didn't turn.

"They needed a reason to stop guessing."

She moved beside him, eyes scanning the horizon.

"You're holding back again."

He glanced at her. "What makes you think that?"

"Because no student at Stage Four controls unstable flame without visible strain."

A beat of silence.

Then she asked:

"Just how much are you hiding?"

Kairo smiled faintly.

"Enough to win."
