Chapter 13: Chapter 13 The Opening Battle
The Colosseum trembled beneath the roar of twenty thousand voices.
Banners of five schools flew high in the air, enchanted to shimmer and shift with the color of their chosen elements. Shields of energy encased the field, forming layered wards that separated the audience from the chaos about to unfold.
It was time.
The first team battle.
Obscured Flame Academy vs. Westholm Arcana Institute.
Each side had five combatants. Five minutes. Victory by surrender, knockout, or spell-stabilization collapse.
Kairo Vale stepped onto the obsidian platform with four others at his back: Freya, Ren, and two upperclassmen: Mira Vellin, the illusionist-healer, and Aeric Thorn, a third-year wind specialist.
Across the field stood the Westholm team uniforms pristine, sigils stitched in white thread, eyes sharp and already analyzing Kairo like a specimen.
"Obscured Flame," their lead mage smirked. "I thought you all led with fire. This one doesn't even smell warm."
Kairo said nothing.
The announcer's voice echoed from the arena's edge:
"Match One: Obscured Flame vs. Westholm Arcana. Begin!"
The platform flared. Mana surged.
Kairo moved instantly.
A burst of static cracked from beneath his boots, a teleport-flash faster than the eye could follow.
He appeared in front of the Westholm lead.
"Wha.."
A lightning arc slammed into the boy's chest, not fatal, but precise, rupturing his mana circuit and sending him sprawling across the stone.
Kairo didn't stop.
He flowed through the line like a current, dodging a barrage of ice needles, sliding under a vine trap, and redirecting a fire burst into the air with a snap of his fingers.
The field crackled.
Then, something shimmered behind him.
A second-tier Westholm striker closed in, using mirrored illusions to mask his blade.
Kairo paused.
His aura shifted.
From his back, a ripple of energy spread quietly, radiant, and lethal.
Then it manifested.
A koi fish made entirely of blue-white lightning swam through the air in a spiral around him, its scales shimmering like polished crystal, its body long and fluid. Its eyes crackled like twin stars.
Aspect Form: Lightning Koi.
Visible. Controlled. Stable.
The crowd went dead silent.
Then chaos exploded.
"Did you see that?!"
"That's a visible aspect fully formed!"
"Already?! At his age?!"
The Westholm illusionist recoiled, her mirrored clones scattering in static as the koi passed through them, dispelling them with pure presence.
Kairo turned, lifted one finger.
The koi pulsed.
A bolt of lightning tore through the air, arcing from Kairo's hand to his target in three successive strikes, each redirected by the koi in perfect angles.
The illusionist dropped.
Outside the barrier, Elira Dawn stood frozen.
She'd seen hundreds of students. Dozens of rare aspects.
But this this was deliberate control.
That koi wasn't born wild. It was shaped.
Tamed.
High in the magisterial balcony, the evaluators stirred.
"That's a lightning aspect."
"Formed and sustained, without a flare surge. His resonance is complete."
Another murmured, "How many aspects did we confirm in this year's roster?"
"Seventeen visible. Four stabilized. Only three matured."
Those three watched from their own seats.
Arvan Kael, Ice Division prodigy from Northern Veil Academy.
Sera Jinn, a flame martialist from Ember Crown Academy, whose flaming lion aspect flickered behind her at rest.
Dalron Vex, Earth Division powerhouse from Stonewall Dominion, his iron-armored rhino aspect already summoned at his side.
They all turned when Kairo moved.
Arvan narrowed his eyes. "He's not on the prodigy list."
Sera blinked. "That's not a common lightning form."
Dalron grunted. "Too elegant for a frontliner."
Meanwhile, Freya watched from the side of the field, her fire rippling across her shoulders as she prepared to step in.
She didn't speak.
Didn't blink.
Because for the first time since the tournament began, she wasn't sure if she was stronger than her brother.
In ten minutes, the battle was over.
Obscured Flame had four standing.
Westholm had none.
The announcer's voice was a thundercrack:
"Victory: Obscured Flame Academy!"
As the team returned to the preparation zone, a voice called out from the corridor beyond the arch.
"Not bad," came a calm, steady tone.
A figure stepped from the shadows, tall, composed, dressed in black with crimson trim.
Theren Lucal.
Top-ranked student of Obscured Flame Academy.
His aspect an enormous wind serpent coiled faintly behind him.
He looked at Kairo. For the first time.
"You've got control," Theren said. "But I wonder…"
He leaned slightly forward.
"How long you can hide the rest."
Kairo didn't answer.
The koi swirled once around his shoulders and vanished in a blink of blue light.
