Chapter 249: Chapter 250: "Where Is Makoto?"
Unohana was not only renowned across the Soul Society for her unparalleled healing techniques and kido mastery but also for her exceptional administrative skills.
As the chairwoman of the Women's Shinigami Association, despite Yachiru being the nominal president, it was Unohana who handled the intricate details and laid the groundwork for the association's establishment.
Today, with the association's inauguration approaching, Unohana personally led a group of female Shinigami to the Senju estate to prepare, temporarily designating it as the headquarters of the Women's Shinigami Association.
Even Yachiru, usually a lively and mischievous figure, appeared surprisingly docile and endearing while being gently led by Unohana.
To the uninformed, it might have looked as though this pink-haired girl was a sweet and obedient daughter being led by her mother.
"Yachiru, once we reach the estate, you can play to your heart's content, but you absolutely cannot damage anything. This is Makoto's courtyard and is only being lent to the association temporarily. Do you understand?" Unohana gently instructed.
Yachiru blinked her large, round eyes and nodded to indicate her understanding.
Smiling softly, Unohana led the group into the Senju estate.
Unlike Unohana's courtyard, which radiated serene beauty interwoven with luxurious details, the noble estate awarded to Senju Makoto by the Seireitei appeared rather… modest and worn.
This stark contrast underscored the care Makoto had poured into constructing Unohana's courtyard, treating it as his true home.
This realization deepened the sincerity of Unohana's gentle smile.
Turning to the group of female Shinigami following her, Unohana slightly bowed and addressed them with a tone both warm and authoritative:
"Please proceed with the preparations as planned, but I must ask you to be mindful. This is Vice-Captain Senju's private courtyard and is only being borrowed as the association's headquarters."
Hearing Unohana's instructions, the Shinigami from various divisions didn't show the slightest dissatisfaction. Instead, they seemed excited, occasionally glancing around, as if searching for traces of the esteemed Makoto.
At that moment, Shuhei Hisagi, now clothed after much effort, heard the commotion and hurried outside. Spreading his arms to block the group's path, he asked:
"Who are you? What do you want?"
His sudden appearance caught the female Shinigami off guard.
"Eh? Who is this?"
"He's wearing clothing with the Senju family crest. Could he be a relative of Doctor Senju?"
"At this age… could he be Doctor Senju's son???"
That last remark caused an abrupt chill to sweep through the group.
It wasn't due to a lack of curiosity, but rather a subconscious reaction to an unspoken pressure.
A moment later, Unohana emerged from the group, her hands folded neatly within her sleeves, her expression as calm and gentle as ever.
"And may I ask your name?" she inquired softly.
Shuhei, upon seeing Unohana, froze for a moment as though struck by realization. He quickly bowed deeply and said:
"Shuhei Hisagi greets Lady Unohana."
"Hisagi? That family name..."
Unohana's curiosity was piqued. "You know me?"
"Lord Makoto has frequently spoken of you and even sketched your likeness using his drawing techniques. I was fortunate enough to hear him describe you," Shuhei answered respectfully.
Sketching techniques?
Hearing this, Unohana's mind immediately recalled the hidden sketchbook she had tucked away, filled with countless, somewhat embarrassing depictions of herself drawn by Makoto.
"And what sort of image did Makoto portray of me?" Unohana asked nonchalantly.
Shuhei truthfully recounted his experiences: over the past few weeks, whenever Makoto had some free time, he would visit Rangiku and Shuhei, taking them on outings, sharing meals, and telling them stories about the Seireitei. Occasionally, he would sketch during these leisurely moments, his subject always being the graceful and composed Unohana.
After confirming that Makoto had depicted her as dignified and gentle in public, Unohana's expression remained unchanged, but a hint of delight flickered in her eyes.
"So, Makoto was the one who brought you to the Seireitei?" she asked.
"Yes, Lady Unohana. It was Lord Makoto who brought both me and Rangiku Matsumoto here," Shuhei replied.
Unohana's gaze swept the area briefly before she asked, "Then, where is Makoto?"
---
Meanwhile, less than five meters away inside the house, Makoto stood pressed against the door, not daring to breathe.
Even though he knew he had cast a kido barrier to block all sound and spiritual pressure, he instinctively held his breath.
Nearby, Rangiku, who was in the middle of trying on the noblewoman's attire under Makoto's guidance, froze as well, her movements stilled by Makoto's tension.
---
Outside, faced with Unohana's inquiry, Shuhei looked around uncertainly and replied, "I… I'm not sure. Lord Makoto told us to change clothes and then meet him."
"Us?" Unohana's sharp intuition kicked in as she turned towards the building Makoto was hiding in and asked, "So Rangiku Matsumoto is changing in there?"
"Yes." Shuhei, ever honest, nodded.
Unohana's eyes narrowed slightly as she noted the complete absence of spiritual pressure in the courtyard, particularly in the building where Makoto was hiding.
Turning back to the group of female Shinigami, she said calmly, "Please proceed with the preparations as planned."
"Yes, Chairwoman/Captain Unohana…"
As the group dispersed amidst a flurry of responses, Yachiru took off gleefully, disappearing in an instant.
Before long, only Unohana and Shuhei remained standing outside the building.
Inside, Makoto, peering through a crack in the door, broke into a cold sweat as he watched the ever-smiling Unohana approach the door.
