Chapter 124: Chapter 124: Silent Father's Love
In the corridors of the teaching building, parents of little young dragons were coming and going. Some were anxiously searching for their child's classroom, while others took the opportunity to chat with those of other races.
Leon and Rossweise headed straight for Noah's classroom.
The homeroom teacher was standing at the classroom door, greeting each family.
Saint Heath was, after all, a noble academy. Those who could attend were not from ordinary dragon families. So while the teachers were dedicated to their teaching responsibilities, they did not act aloof. They welcomed every family with a warm smile.
Just after finishing with one family and before she could catch her breath, the homeroom teacher spotted Leon and Rossweise walking toward her.
She quickly stepped forward and took the initiative to shake hands with them.
The vice principal had instructed that model families should be treated with ninefold—no, even tenfold—the enthusiasm.
"Welcome, both of you, to the essay ceremony. It must have been a tiring journey."
"Not at all. Teachers work hard every day to teach so many children; that's much harder," Rossweise responded politely.
The homeroom teacher felt a little embarrassed by the praise and covered her mouth with a light chuckle. "It's fine. It's my job, after all. Please go in first. Noah is seated in the middle of the front row."
Since she was much younger than the other young dragons and naturally shorter, it was reasonable to place her in the front row so she could clearly see the blackboard.
"Alright."
The couple was about to step into the classroom but suddenly stopped, as if they had thought of something.
Rossweise pursed her lips, hesitated for a moment, but couldn't help asking, "Teacher, I'd like to ask, will Vice Principal Wilson be here today?"
The homeroom teacher shook her head. "The vice principal is attending a meeting with the headmaster in the main campus today, so he won't be present at the award ceremony."
At that moment, the couple sighed in relief, as if they had been granted amnesty.
That old B-dragon, the "social death executioner," was not here. If there was a segment about model families during the ceremony, it should pass quickly.
Leon and Rossweise no longer had to worry about wanting to crawl into a hole like the last two times.
They walked into the classroom together and saw Noah in the first row.
"Mommy, Daddy, here~" Noah waved her hand from her seat.
The two of them walked over and sat on either side of her.
The classroom was spacious. To allow every family to comfortably and happily accompany their children during the ceremony, the academy had set up parent seats beside each young dragon's seat.
After sitting down, Leon asked, "The letter from the academy didn't mention this time's results. Have they not been announced yet?"
Noah nodded. "Later, the teacher will announce the top three essays based on overall ranking, and the students will decide whether they want to read them aloud."
She paused, blinking her beautiful eyes, and looked at Leon seriously. "Daddy."
Leon wasn't sure why his daughter suddenly became so serious. "Hmm? What is it?"
"If I get into the top three, I want to... read my essay. Is that okay?"
Leon was momentarily stunned. He hadn't expected Noah to choose to read her essay when it was entirely up to the student's will.
Although she was a competitive child, she didn't like standing out or showing off too much.
But Noah always had her own thoughts and considerations, and Leon had always respected her choices.
So Leon nodded and replied, "No problem. If you get the chance to read your essay, Mommy and Daddy will listen carefully."
"Mm-hmm!"
Then she turned to look at Rossweise.
Since their daughter wanted to read, Rossweise naturally had no objections.
However, the couple noticed a small detail that was different from usual.
This time, Noah had asked Leon first and only sought Rossweise's opinion after getting his response.
Normally, she would ask her mother's opinion first.
Was it an unintentional switch in order, or was there another reason?
Well, just a minor detail. Although Leon and Rossweise usually liked to compete over their daughter, "who gets asked first" wasn't something worth fighting over.
With less than twenty minutes before the ceremony started, parents continued arriving one after another.
As the family of three whispered among themselves, a familiar name suddenly echoed from the classroom entrance.
"Lar, do you have confidence in this competition?"
"I do, Daddy."
"That's good. Although I haven't read your essay, I believe in you. You'll definitely get a good ranking. When the time comes, you must read it out loud in front of your classmates. Understand?"
"Yes, Daddy. The teacher also said that my essay about fatherly love was very sincere."
"Hahaha! That's my boy. I'll reward you with a big meal when we get home."
As they spoke, Lar and his father strode into the classroom.
Since Leon's family was sitting in the front row, they saw them as soon as they entered.
Lar's father suddenly paused in his steps and immediately recognized Leon.
The moment he made eye contact with this guy who refused to show his tail, his knees inexplicably ached...
He pursed his lips and coldly snorted, holding Lar's hand as they went to the back seats.
Leon glanced at him and then asked, "That unlucky kid's essay was good?"
Noah nodded. "Even though he's bad at fighting, he does well in academic subjects."
"No problem. My daughter is definitely better than him." Leon patted Noah's little head.
Noah smiled, quietly waiting for the ceremony to begin.
Twenty minutes later, all the young dragons and their parents had arrived.
The homeroom teacher stepped onto the podium, smiling slightly and nodding.
"Thank you, parents, for taking the time out of your busy schedules to attend our class's essay competition award ceremony."
After the opening remarks, the homeroom teacher went straight to the point.
"The essays submitted this time were diverse, and each student had their own unique perspective on 'family,' which was excellent."
"I have written detailed comments at the end of each student's essay. You can review them after the ceremony."
"Now, I have three essays with the highest overall scores. I will announce the authors one by one, and they can decide whether to read them aloud."
After explaining the process, the families in the audience whispered among themselves, curious about whether their child had made it into the top three.
Even if they didn't, they could still learn from the teacher's comments to improve their young dragon's writing.
"Alright, now, I will announce the third place in this essay competition for Class One of the Young Dragon Division... Kelly! Congratulations~"
The homeroom teacher led the applause, and the students and parents followed.
"Kelly, would you like to read your essay?" the homeroom teacher asked gently.
A young dragon named Kelly stood up. She had simple ponytailed hair and wore round glasses. Beside her, her mother held her hand in encouragement.
Kelly, however, clutched the hem of her dress nervously. After a moment's hesitation, she shyly shook her head and softly said,"No need, teacher."
Her mother smiled reassuringly, showing no sign of blaming Kelly for her shyness.
The homeroom teacher also smoothed things over with a smile. "Alright. Everyone, though Kelly is quiet and reserved, her essay was full of love for her mother. Here, Kelly, take your essay."
Kelly took small steps to the podium, receiving her essay with both hands. "Thank you, teacher."
The teacher patted her head, and she returned to her seat.
"Now, the second place goes to... Rand! Congratulations~"
With only one spot left, Leon's family grew nervous in anticipation.
But when the teacher announced the winner, the first syllable wasn't "No"...
"Lar! Congratulations, Lar!"
Leon's heart sank.
"Lar! Congratulations to student Lar!"
Before the homeroom teacher could continue asking whether Lar wanted to read his essay aloud, Lar's father had already stood up from his seat, unable to contain his excitement as he proudly boasted.
"Thank you, teacher, thank you! Lar being able to take first place is in no small part thanks to you. But since the theme of this essay competition was about family and affection, I also helped Lar quite a lot in this."
Listening to Lar's father boasting about himself, Leon felt a mix of emotions.
Could it be that the unconventional "romantic love between parents" approach really didn't stand out...
It was indeed a little... unexpected.
But as for any disappointment, he would just process it slowly on his own later.
Leon turned instead to comfort his daughter.
"It's okay, Noah. Later, we'll check the teacher's comments on your essay, fix the weak points, and further develop the strong parts."
Rossweise also held her daughter's hand. "Maybe your Daddy and I didn't perform well enough on our date that day. Next time, we'll work harder together to aim for a better result."
Although Noah couldn't completely hide her disappointment, she was, after all, an understanding child. She knew that her parents had put in a lot of effort for her essay. She nodded. "Mommy, you and Daddy already did very well. Don't say that."
Rossweise smiled and patted her on the head.
At this moment, Lar's father was still basking in his triumph.
The homeroom teacher had no choice but to interrupt him. "Lar's father, so now, should Lar read his essay aloud?"
"Read! Of course, read! Lar, go on, read it for your classmates." Lar's father was very confident in his child's work—after all, it had taken first place. How could he not be?
Lar nodded straightforwardly, stood up, walked to the podium, picked up his essay, and began to read.
Lar: "Title: 'A Silent Father's Love.'"
Lar's father: "See? Just look at the title—it's full of depth, right?"
Several parents nearby could only politely echo, "Right, right, right."
"My father is a duke of the Scarlet Flame Dragon Clan. He usually has no time to play games with me or guide me in my studies."
"But I know that my father is busy with work. He actually loves me very much; he's just not good at expressing it."
As Lar read his essay on stage, his father listened intently from below, enjoying every word.
He practically had a comment of praise for every single sentence.
Midway through, the essay reached the part that tied into the theme, "A Silent Father's Love."
"I still remember one time when I got into trouble at school. When I got home, I thought my father would scold me, but he didn't. The next day, I asked my father, as usual, to teach me some simple magic, but his expression seemed a little strange."
Hearing this, Lar's father's smile stiffened slightly below. It was as if he suddenly realized something.
"My father didn't refuse me. He began teaching me how to use a small dragon flame spell. But before long, he was sweating profusely and couldn't even stand properly."
"It was only afterward that I found out—my father had actually injured his knee a few days before."
"I asked him how it happened. He said that while hunting, he accidentally hit a very hard rock and that he'd be fine after resting for a couple of days."
"But at that time, in order not to make me worry, in order to let me focus on learning magic, my father chose to remain silent. He chose to endure."
"This is a silent father's love!"
Sitting below and listening, Leon's previously disappointed mood suddenly lifted a little.
