Chapter 85: Chapter 85 – The Unusual Makino
After recalling the Multi-Headed Dog to the Animal Path's summoning realm, Kaito cast a glance at the massive bird trembling nearby, considering what to do with it.
The Animal Path already had a bird-type summon, but it wasn't as large as this one. Judging by the attack it had launched on him earlier, this bird was fairly strong—possibly because it had devoured those pirates.
Sensing that its fate now hung on Kaito's whim, the bird's face twisted into a fawning smile. It lowered its head to the ground, stretching out its long neck as if submitting in surrender.
Seeing how surprisingly perceptive the bird was, Kaito found it amusing. He rubbed his chin.
"Well, fine. I'll make you one of my summons."
He walked over to the bird's head, gave it a quick once-over, then said,
"You look like an idiot... so from now on, your name is Rookie."
Rookie squawked twice, seemingly accepting the name without objection.
Kaito met its gaze and activated the Animal Path's power. The bird's massive eyes took on the same Rinnegan pattern. From this moment on, it was now officially his summon.
Patting Rookie's head, Kaito gave it its first command—fly up high into the sky. He himself stayed behind on the ground.
Turning back toward the small island, he placed his hand against the earth and muttered,
"A place like this shouldn't be allowed to exist."
As soon as the words left his mouth, the island began to shake violently. Cracks split across the surface, and dazzling white light shot out from the fissures.
With a deafening boom, the entire island exploded like a popped balloon, vanishing without a trace into the sea.
After the destruction, Kaito's figure floated upward. He landed on the circling Rookie's back.
With a shrill cry, Rookie soared toward the warship.
...
On the deck, the Marines spotted the giant bird approaching and quickly reported it to Kalifa and Ain. With Kaito absent, the two of them were the ranking officers aboard.
By the time Kalifa and Ain reached the deck, the giant bird was already closing in. Ain stepped forward, ready to use Geppo to intercept it.
But Kalifa stopped her, shaking her head. She had a gut feeling this bird had something to do with the boss again.
Sure enough, just as the bird reached the ship, it dissolved into a puff of smoke—Kaito dropped down from the cloud, landing on the deck.
Seeing him, Kalifa and Ain both breathed a sigh of relief. They exchanged a glance, then silently turned to go about their business again.
Neither of them even asked where Kaito had found such a bizarre creature. After all, anything related to him was bound to be a little bizarre.
...
Inside a bar in Foosha Village,
Makino stood behind the counter, absentmindedly wiping a glass.
Not long ago, Sabo's small boat had been destroyed under orders from the Celestial Dragons while he was at sea. He hadn't been seen since.
Luffy and Ace had taken the news hard, and they'd both been in low spirits for days. Makino was deeply worried for the two boys.
After wiping for a while, she paused, sighed, and lowered her head in thought.
"Poor Sabo… I wonder if Luffy and Ace are feeling any better. They're probably still training out in the forest."
Suddenly, a warm voice broke her thoughts.
"Miss, I'll have a glass of orange juice."
"Ah—sorry, I was spacing out! I'll get that right away!"
Snapping out of it, Makino quickly shoved aside her worries and looked up at the guest.
But as her eyes landed on him, she froze.
What caught her off guard were his eyes.
They were purple, with concentric black rings in both pupils. In his right eye, there were six mysterious tomoe-shaped symbols.
Just looking into those eyes made Makino feel as if her consciousness was being drawn into them.
The visitor was none other than Kaito. He had left the warship docked nearby, changed into civilian clothes, and come to Foosha Village alone.
Seeing Makino frozen and staring at him, Kaito gave a polite smile.
"What's wrong? Do I look scary or something?"
His words snapped her out of her daze. Realizing how rude she'd just been, Makino quickly shook her head.
"S-Sorry! I didn't mean to stare, it's just... your eyes are really unique. I couldn't help looking. I'm really sorry—this orange juice is on the house!"
"Haha, it's fine. No need for that. Just make the drink."
"Right away!"
Makino turned to get the juice. A short while later, she placed a massive glass of orange juice in front of Kaito.
Seeing the glass was nearly the size of a bucket, Kaito chuckled and took a few sips. The taste caught him by surprise.
"This is actually really good."
Makino, still wiping down the counter, smiled at the compliment. Her earlier nervousness eased up, and her tone grew more natural.
"Thank you for the praise. You look unfamiliar—this your first time here?"
"Yeah. I was asked to come check on someone's grandson."
"Oh? May I ask who it is? I know most of the kids around here."
"Sure. His name is Monkey D. Luffy."
"Luffy?"
Makino paused, shock flashing across her face.
"You know Grandpa Garp? Are you a Marine?"
"I am."
"May I ask your name?"
"Of course. Uchiha Kaito."
Uchiha Kaito?
Hearing the name, Makino instinctively covered her mouth.
She had heard of him before—these days, few on the sea hadn't.
The youngest Vice Admiral in Marine Headquarters, with terrifying power beyond imagination. It was said he was only a step away from becoming an Admiral.
The other guests in the bar, upon hearing the name, also looked over with curiosity, wanting to catch a glimpse of such a major figure.
Kaito hadn't expected such a strong reaction just from stating his name. Given that Makino had met Shanks—who was now a Yonko—why would she be so surprised? After all, he was still just a Vice Admiral.
With that in mind, he asked tentatively,
"Do you know Shanks? Has he been here before?"
But once again, Makino's reaction caught him off guard.
She scowled.
"Of course I know him! That red-haired guy... Luffy became obsessed with becoming Pirate King because of him!"
Huh?
Kaito remembered that in the anime, Makino had a great relationship with Shanks. She even had his child. So what was going on here? History had changed—again?
Damn. His advantage of knowing the future was starting to feel less and less useful.
Kaito rubbed his forehead with a sigh.
"Alright... then can you tell me where Luffy is now? I'd like to check on him."
"Mhm. He should still be in the forest to the east. He's been feeling down lately... I hope you can cheer him up a little, and maybe even talk some sense into him. Get him to stop chasing that Pirate King nonsense!"
"I'll try my best..."
