Strongest Demigod System

Chapter 96: Promise of Power

Azrael immediately understood what Cleopatra was saying.

The other students in the school weren't like him. They weren't orphans with no backing.

They all knew that in order to grow stronger, they would have to kill Lesser Daemons, so most of them would have already started to train on their own to grow their Divine Core as much as possible.

Although Divine Academy was also going to give the students a chance to kill Lesser Daemons during the training exercises, why should they have to wait for the school to provide them with a chance when they could go ahead and do it themselves?

It was the most sensible thing to do.

But another question came to Azrael's mind after this realization.

He glanced at Cleopatra curiously. She still had her confident grin in place, like she could read his mind without even trying.

Cleopatra spoke.

"You want to know why I'm helping you, don't you?"

Azrael waited for her to continue, and Cleopatra didn't disappoint.

She stepped close to him and leaned down while putting her hand on his chin.

Their faces were so close that Azrael could count the lashes on her brow. If he dared to move forward a little, he could connect their lips.

"I already told you, didn't I? There are other ways to gain power even without a God aspect. I know you want to be strong, that's why you're still in this school even when all the odds are stacked against you. That tenacity is what attracted me to you in the first place. I can teach you things that no one else is willing to teach you. All you have to do is say yes to my offer. Become mine and I'll change your life."

Azrael stared Cleopatra in the eye, and there, he saw a possessiveness that went beyond anything he had ever seen in his life.

Cleopatra didn't just want to be with him as a romantic partner.

He could tell that she wanted to hold him in the palm of her hand.

... She wanted to own him.

Azrael narrowed his eyes at her and spoke.

"Give me the Hymn to Thor and I'll think about it."

If Cleopatra was willing to go this far just to have him, then he was going to see just how much further he could push her.

Cleopatra blinked before chuckling.

"You're a modern-day swindler, aren't you? You know I can't do that. It's not mine to give."

Azrael pulled his chin away from Cleopatra's hold, and Cleopatra smiled before she stood back up.

Behind both of them, the facility worker was trying his best to become invisible.

Their moment seemed far too personal and intimate to be seen by others, and he wondered if he should even be there.

Cleopatra sighed at Azrael's stubbornness.

"Well, I'm in no hurry to hear your answer. This much shouldn't be enough to change the mind of the man I chose for myself anyway. Now, I'll give you what I actually want to teach you."

Cleopatra stretched her hand out to the facility worker, and he came forward with a stone that looked like obsidian. It was completely black with a smooth surface. It was shaped like an oval, and there was a small hole at the top where a chain was tied to make it into a pendant.

Cleopatra threw it at Azrael, and Azrael caught it easily and raised it to eye level.

"What is this?"

"That is Essence Breaker. It's a special rock that actively repels any form of Divine Essence that tries to enter it. It can only be found in the Null Zone, so I'm sure you understand just how precious it is."

Azrael looked down at the black rock and turned it around in his palm. It was cool to the touch, like it was constantly absorbing all the heat around it in an endothermic reaction.

Azrael wondered what Cleopatra was giving him something like this for.

"You don't have a God Aspect, so you can't hope to ever match any of your classmates in terms of raw power, but that doesn't mean you have to remain powerless. The path I'm about to show you is something that depends entirely on your skill, determination, and pure bloody luck. Many people have tried to walk down this path and they weren't able to because it wasn't meant for them. But I believe that someone like you might just be able to make it."

Cleopatra raised her hand to the man beside her, and he put another piece of Essence Breaker in her hand.

The room suddenly grew tense as Cleopatra released some of her Divine Essence from her body. There was a wave of static that spread through the air, like someone was charging the air with lightning, and Azrael watched as the Essence Breaker slowly turned from its regular black to a pale blue around its edges.

The blue coloration traveled inward from the edge and slowly turned white as it encompassed the entirety of the rock.

Then, finally, when the entire rock had been changed, the rock exploded!

BANG!

Azrael dodged a piece of rock that shot past his head, and he narrowed his eyes at the rock in his hand as Cleopatra continued talking.

"The Essence Breaker tries its best to prevent Essence from passing through, but once you are capable of charging it with your Divine Essence, this happens. You aren't going to be taught how to manipulate Divine Essence until you get to your second year. At your current level, it's more beneficial for you to rely on your God Aspect. But you don't have a God Aspect, so I'm going to test and see if you're worth teaching Essence Manipulation.

"That rock in your hand needs to be filled with exactly fifty units of Divine Essence before it shatters. If you can learn to control your Essence well enough to shatter that rock before next week Saturday, then I'll take you to someone who can show you how to awaken your Authority."

Azrael looked at Cleopatra in surprise.

This was the second time that Azrael would be hearing about Authorities.

Scar and Jane's conversation in class earlier told Azrael that Authority was something they weren't meant to learn until much later. Scar even spoke about it like many people would never get to use it.

Was it really possible to learn it now?

Azrael felt a new wave of desire pass through him right then.

This was another chance for him to get stronger.

If he could learn this, then he wouldn't have to worry about lagging behind in school.

He could hide his God Aspect from others and use his Authority to climb the ranks.

But something that Cleopatra said came back to the front of his mind, and he frowned for a second before asking:

"What did you mean when you said it relied on luck?"

Cleopatra smiled at the question. She was happy that Azrael didn't allow the thought of new power to affect his reasoning. Just because you have the chance to gain power in front of you doesn't mean you're worthy of reaching out to grab it.

"Authorities are very rare. So rare in fact that it is estimated that only one in a million demigods will ever get to activate it, and out of that number, very few are capable of learning how to tame their Authority and utilize it properly. I hate to admit it, but even I don't have an Authority."
