Chapter 97: Encounter
"There are only two people I know who possess it, and one of them is unavailable right now. So whether or not you're capable of getting stronger depends entirely on how much potential the world sees in you. And from what I've seen, you have a strange love-hate relationship with the world. On one hand, you're a reject with no God Aspect, and on the other hand, you possess an EX rank potential—the highest possible potential for any demigod.
"Now, you'll have to gamble with your destiny one more time. Is the world going to give you the chance to become stronger by granting you an Authority, or will it scorn you and leave you with nothing? It'll be fun to see how this turns out."
…
Azrael and Cleopatra left the Divine Enforcers facility a few minutes later after thanking the worker that helped them.
Azrael had been silent for a long time since he heard about Authorities from Cleopatra, and in his heart, he was thinking about what she said.
It was true that he had a love-hate relationship with the world, but the chances of him having an Authority were seriously low.
There was more of a chance that he would have nothing at all.
But was that enough reason to not try?
No, Azrael decided that it wasn't.
He would allow the future to handle itself, but as far as the present went, Azrael was only going to do everything in his power to get stronger.
Azrael felt the Essence Breaker that was in his pocket, and he decided that he would start training once he got back home. It was already nearing midnight, but he should be able to put in at least an hour of training now before going to sleep.
Sleeping for four hours should be enough to prepare for the training exercise tomorrow.
… hopefully.
"Cleopatra. Is that you? Oh, it is you. My goodness."
A voice suddenly spoke up from the side, and Azrael turned to see an older woman coming towards them. She was wearing designer clothes and carrying a very expensive-looking bag.
Beside her, Azrael saw someone that he didn't think he would meet tonight.
Jane Ashton was staring at both Azrael and Cleopatra with her eyes narrowed in curiosity.
Cleopatra, meanwhile, looked completely confused as she stared at the woman and asked.
"Do I know you?"
The woman clapped her hands together before coming closer with an awed expression.
"Oh, no no, of course you don't. You see, my daughter here—oh, come on Jane, don't be shy. Yes, Jane here is going to the same school. She's an S Rank, just like you."
Cleopatra nodded slowly before turning to glance at Jane Ashton.
"I remember you from the captain's meeting. You're the Vice-captain of A Class, aren't you? Azrael's assistant."
Jane's entire expression soured once Cleopatra gestured to Azrael while calling her his assistant, but she just forced out a nod.
The attention of Jane's mother suddenly shifted from Cleopatra to Azrael, and for a moment, Azrael saw something dark flash across the woman's face.
"So this is the boy that beat you out to become the captain? How… nice. Anyway, Cleopatra, I was wondering if you could take a picture with me. I've always admired your strength. I hope that my Jane here can one day become as strong as you."
Jane interrupted her mother.
"Mum, they're busy, let's just go—"
"Oh, nonsense. My little girl is always too humble for her own good. You see, she's just one of the hardest workers I know. I'm always telling her to get some rest, but she's adamant about making sure she doesn't disappoint us. We actually came here to buy her a new weapon; her old one is far too weak for her powers now. We're looking around to find the most expensive one, haha. I always say she deserves nothing but the best. I have very high hopes for her future."
Jane's mother laughed again while bringing out her phone, and Cleopatra indulged her and took a single selfie before she turned away and called Azrael to follow her.
Jane's mother called out to Azrael just before they could leave.
"Uhm, excuse me. You said your name was Azrael, right? I hear that you don't have a God Aspect. Is this true?"
Azrael turned to glance at Jane, and Jane couldn't even meet his eye as she just stared at the ground. Jane's hands were tightened into fists, and she looked like she was trying hard not to let her mother's actions get to her.
Azrael nodded at the woman, and her smile became more strained before she forced out another laugh.
As Azrael left, he caught some of what was said between Jane and her mother.
"I can't believe you allowed that reject to beat you. I'm so disappointed in you, Jane."
"Sorry, mother."
"Don't be sorry, Jane. Be better."
Jane's voice gained a hard undertone as she forced out her response.
"…Yes, mother."
Just from the slight interaction they had, Azrael could tell that the relationship between Jane and her mother was anything but perfect.
Jane was obviously embarrassed by the way her mother acted, and she was trying her best to get away from them as quickly as possible.
But it was her mother's attitude that really stuck with Azrael.
Jane's mother reminded Azrael of a leech, and Azrael decided right then that he did not like the woman.
…
Azrael and Cleopatra made their way back to the tailor shop and met Flora working on the final touches on an impeccably magnificent suit.
The suit and the undershirt were both pure black, and the tie was a brilliant light grey that stood out against the dark contrast.
There were two silver cufflinks attached to the wrist cuffs, and at the breast pocket was a single white rose.
"Ah-ha! That should do it! Beautiful! Oh, I have outdone myself again!"
Flora exclaimed in praise of her own work when she was finally done with the touchups, and she turned around and exclaimed again when she saw Cleopatra and Azrael.
"There you are, Cleo! Come, you'll love what I've created!"
Flora spread her hand out to Cleopatra and gave her a kiss on the cheek before she moved to the side and revealed the suit to them grandly.
Cleopatra smiled as she looked it over, and she couldn't help but be impressed by the work.
It looked magnificent.
"Try it on."
Cleopatra spoke up after a few seconds, and Azrael glanced at her for a moment before he sighed and walked towards the changing room while Flora took the suit down from the mannequin to give it to him.
A few minutes later, Azrael came out from the changing room with the suit on.
Even Azrael had to admit that Flora had really done a good job.
It was perfect, and no piece of clothing had ever fit him as well as this.
"Oh mamma-mia, if I was only a few years younger! I would've eaten you up, my dear! You are so handsome!"
Flora put her hands to her cheek with a small blush as she looked Azrael over, and Azrael chuckled lightly at her words.
"He needs shoes."
Cleopatra spoke again after glancing at Azrael's bare feet, and Flora wasted no time as she headed straight for her inner store.
"What is your size, my dear?"
Azrael told her his shoe size, and Flora brought out a pair that would fit him perfectly.
The shoes were polished black leather that shone in the dim light of the shop, and when Azrael put them on, he heard Cleopatra release a pleased sound.
Azrael looked up, and he stood straighter as Cleopatra walked up to him and gently took hold of his tie.
