Chapter 585: Chapter 584: Escape and Being Targeted
Facing the ferocious charge of the Lizard Doctor, Otto was caught off guard. Otto had very little experience in fighting, let alone battling superhumans. In theory, Otto, having never undergone any supernatural events or training, couldn't react to the Lizard Doctor's near-ambush move.
However, the Lizard Doctor was unfortunate in that Otto's mechanical tentacles reacted much faster than he did. The four mechanical tentacles immediately counterattacked, directly stabbing at the Lizard Doctor's body.
It must be noted that although the Lizard Doctor appeared more aggressive and proactive, he also lacked combat experience. He didn't realize that one shouldn't jump into mid-air to fight if they couldn't fly, a lesson that the Lizard Doctor had yet to learn.
Thus, similar to the Dark Night Wolf, when faced with the mechanical tentacles' attack, the Lizard Doctor tried to dodge mid-air but failed. He could only extend his claws and tail to block the attack.
"Boom!" In the next moment, the Lizard Doctor was sent flying, landing awkwardly on the ground with a few wounds on his body. Most notably, he looked at Otto in disbelief, unable to accept that he had lost to him.
When he first mutated, the Lizard Doctor was brimming with confidence. Even without any tests, he could feel the immense power in his body. Especially when bullets couldn't harm him, his confidence grew, and he felt invincible.
But now, after just a brief clash with Otto, he was beaten back and wounded. This was something the Lizard Doctor couldn't accept, and it fueled his desire for even greater power.
"Who are you, and how do you know me?" Otto asked after his mechanical tentacles sent the Lizard Doctor flying. He didn't pursue the advantage because he had no experience in such situations. He was more concerned about the Lizard Doctor's identity.
The way the Lizard Doctor had called his name made it seem like they knew each other. Additionally, the remnants of the lab uniform on the Lizard Doctor suggested he might be a scientist who mutated during an experiment, much like Otto himself.
Recalling his own past, Otto hesitated. Even though the Lizard Doctor had killed many, he might still be in a state of loss. If Otto could help him recover, it would be better than killing him outright. At least, that's what Otto thought.
"Die!" But as Otto pondered whether the Lizard Doctor could be restored, the Lizard Doctor seized the opportunity and attacked again.
Unfortunately, the Lizard Doctor still didn't understand Otto's situation. In battle, it was Otto's mechanical tentacles that reacted, not Otto himself. Unless the Lizard Doctor moved faster than the tentacles could react, he couldn't catch Otto off guard.
"Boom!" In the next moment, the Lizard Doctor was sent flying again, landing more awkwardly with new wounds on his body. Blood began to stain the ground beneath him.
However, the Lizard Doctor's thick skin and tough flesh meant these injuries weren't life-threatening. He felt frustrated, unable to demonstrate the superiority of his current form before being defeated by Otto's tentacles. This was a blow to his goal of evolving all humanity into lizard-people.
"Otto! There's a supernatural event at the nearby campus. Hold him off; I'm on my way!" Tony Stark's voice came through Otto's mechanical tentacles. Tony had directly relayed the communication to ensure Otto wouldn't miss any messages.
"No worries, I've already defeated him. He seems to be another product of a failed experiment..." Otto replied, looking at the Lizard Doctor who glared at him with resentment.
"You are the failed experiment! I am a superior being, far more advanced than humans!" Enraged by Otto's words, the Lizard Doctor charged again, only to be knocked back once more by the mechanical tentacles.
Otto wasn't too concerned about the repetitive attacks, and Tony Stark, hearing that Otto had the situation under control, relaxed a bit and slowed his approach.
Truthfully, Tony Stark and the Avengers hadn't paid much attention to monitoring this campus area, assuming that with so many Avengers around, any supernatural events could be easily handled, especially with Kara's presence.
However, Tony hadn't anticipated a supernatural event occurring during the Avengers' vacation. Fortunately, Otto, who had recently joined the Avengers, was on campus, marking Doctor Octopus's first appearance in a supernatural event.
Yet, Tony hadn't anticipated Otto's inexperience. When the Lizard Doctor attacked again, the mechanical tentacles knocked him farther away. This gave the Lizard Doctor the opportunity he needed. From the moment he launched another attack, he had planned to use Otto's force to distance himself and escape.
"Damn! He's escaping!" Realizing something was wrong, Otto controlled the mechanical tentacles to pursue, but the Lizard Doctor had already disappeared into the sewer.
By the time Otto reached the sewer and looked down, he saw only darkness and smelled a foul odor.
"What? He escaped? Didn't you say you defeated him?" Tony Stark received the news and was immediately unsettled. A superhuman with a desire to kill on the loose posed a significant threat, even if the Lizard Doctor's strength wasn't immense. To ordinary people, he was still a major danger since they couldn't survive his attacks.
"Sorry, I didn't expect him to use my attack to escape. He didn't seem seriously injured; I thought he was almost done for, bleeding all over..." Otto felt ashamed under Tony's stern gaze. It was indeed his mistake. Had he captured the Lizard Doctor with the mechanical tentacles, none of this would have happened.
"No! Your response to the supernatural event was too poor. This is also my fault for assuming you could immediately become a superhero without special training," Tony said seriously. "From now on, you need extensive training to become a proper superhero!"
In truth, Otto's performance was partly due to Tony's oversight. Tony had appointed Otto as a superhero due to his intellect, assuming he would be useful in the Avengers without considering the necessary training.
The Avengers had training for enhancing abilities, but no experience in nurturing a superhero from scratch. Peter Parker and others had extensive combat experience before joining the Avengers, unlike Otto, who relied on the natural reactions of his mechanical tentacles. His lack of combat experience and understanding of the supernatural world led to mistakes.
"Training? What about that lizard-man?" Otto asked hesitantly.
"That guy calls himself the Lizard Doctor. I've had JARVIS track him. He's likely Curt Connors, a biology professor here. We found remnants of lizard serum in his lab. He probably turned himself into that creature using it," Tony explained.
Tony Stark had already begun handling the aftermath, delegating Stark Industries personnel to clean up. He had also collected everything from the Lizard Doctor's lab for reverse engineering.
With Tony's intellect, replicating the Lizard Doctor's procedure wouldn't be difficult. He was preparing a reverse serum to inject into the Lizard Doctor upon capture, transforming him back into a human for trial.
Unlike Otto, who couldn't be separated from his mechanical tentacles, the Lizard Doctor's transformation was biological. Reversing it back to his original form wouldn't be too challenging.
The Lizard Doctor, unaware that his lab had been sealed and his research being reverse-engineered, hid in the sewers, filled with anger and resentment. He planned to continue his research, aiming not only to evolve all humanity into lizard-men but also to gain more power.
"This can't be my limit! Lizards can regenerate tails, but my recovery isn't there yet. If I perfect my research, I might become immortal! No injury from Doctor Octopus could affect me!" The Lizard Doctor muttered, clenching his fists and contemplating his next steps.
"I must become stronger! I can't be considered a superior being if I can't even match a mechanical arm! I need more power!"
In a deserted section of the sewer, the Lizard Doctor's ambition reignited. He began planning the experiments and materials needed to achieve his goals.
Unbeknownst to him, it wasn't just the Avengers who were after him. While the Avengers had kept Connors' identity secret, they couldn't cover up the massacre on campus.
Several official agencies had also taken an interest in the Lizard Doctor, spurred by the previous werewolf incident in Europe and the subsequent vampire and werewolf dimensional events. They had also become interested in Baron Strucker's animal warriors, eventually leading to the exposure and disappearance of Baron Strucker after heavy losses of animal warriors and research data.
Some of these research materials fell into the hands of official agencies, who had made no progress until they saw the Lizard Doctor. They saw hope for successful research...
