Chapter 13: Chapter 13: The Mystery Machine

"Mom, Dad, when are we going on that mission again? You too promised, you guys said you'll take me with you to watch one of your monster hunting trips together!"

"They are arriving in an hour. I already told you to calm down, and wait till the mystery van arrives with Fred and his gang of friends."

"Dad, who are these people anyway? I thought you and Mom were taking me on a trip together as a family. Not as some additional lurker to another group."

"Son, you see our trips or hunts as those in the know-how can be pretty dangerous. Fred's gang isn't known for taking on things on our level. You may only be watching us work with them, but our safety is our priority."

"As your father implied, Lucas, hunting monsters is very serious business. They handle local mysteries, and more often than not those mysteries are caused by humans. One in every hundred cases they handle might involve some kind of real monster."

"Just like your mother said son, these hunters are a special kind of hunter who mostly involve themselves in mundane mysteries caused by human hands. These mysteries they go around solving are just a hobby they enjoy as friends." James explained while showing multiple newspaper articles showing the group standing before unmasked people tied in ropes, next to law enforcement.

. . .

"Mom, how are you two going to contact these people when neither of you has a phone? Wait a minute, how do people even contact anyone you know without a phone."

"I sent a familiar yesterday to see if we could work something out together. They sent a letter back this morning, and they agreed."

"Son, even if we don't encounter any monsters. Learning how to set traps from Fred and learning how they solve mysteries will be useful information for your future Son." James insisted with emphasis trying to get the boy to see how this trip was for his good.

2 hours later. . .

The van was painted light blue with groovy light green stripes on it. On both sides of the van two orange flowers could be seen with green planes on the sides. The green panels had the machine's name on it with orange letters, The Mystery Machine.

It had arrived at Lucas's home before a small group of people came outside of it.

. . .

Ten minutes before, the van was still on the road.

"Alright gang, we know the drill right?"

"Ya we do Fred, so like Emma, James's kid helping too, or is the little man just watching us." Shaggy asked with both hands full with a comically large ham, and cheese sandwich.

"What Shaggy says." Scooby replied.

"Guys remember we aren't just helping them out for old times sake. Jeepers aren't we kinda like the kid's godparents since we were super close with Emma." Daphne asked with her mouth wide open in shock.

"Zoinks, Daphne you might be right about that to a certain level. I guess the little man has a few godparents with the mystery crew, or god uncles and aunts." Shaggy replied as he kept eating his food.

"Miss Emma and her husband helped us out after what happened near the end of Crystal Cove." Velma said.

"Velma, you're already 20, when are you going to marry Hot dog water already. Me, and Fred already got married, and Shaggy, well Shaggy is Shaggy." Daphne's curiosity got the best of her so she let out what the gang had been wondering for ages now.

"Jinkies, what kind of question is that guys? That's not her name ok." Velma replied with a little blush on her cheeks.

"Marcie Fleach, that is her name, guys just call her Marcie ok. Not hot dog water or anything weird, I thought we were long past this." Velma replied.

"Zoinks, like what do you mean I'm me? I'll have you know Daphne I'm a chick magnet, the ladies can't have enough of me guys." Shaggy said while puffing up his chest.

"My bro Scooby even managed to find another talking dog by the name of Susie. Susie's blonde-haired lady friend seems rather nice, who knows she might be the one for me gang."

"Shaggy you might have rich parents, but that doesn't put you in the same league as Audrey Hall. With the wealth and power she has behind her with the actual power she has at her fingertips that dream of yours will stay such." Velma replied with the soul-crushing truth Shaggy ignored.

'Maybe if you tried to be more serious all the time, your strength might appeal to that woman.' Velma thought.

"Alright gang remember this mystery involves sightings of a creepy ghost stealing people's items. Emma and her family will be joining us this time like we talked about gang. Who knows, we might find treasure if we are lucky." Fred spoke aloud with a smile.

"Jeepers, Velma now that monsters are real in this world do you think this case will follow the hundreds we solved before? I mean only like one in every hundred cases we solve nowadays are caused by monsters." Daphne asked patiently.

"Daphne, it's only happening this way since we only look into nonviolent mysteries, most of these fake monsters don't hurt people most of the time. We leave the more violent mysteries alone to actual hunters who can handle themselves." Velma responded.

"We can handle ourselves, Velma, but it's not like the stuff we signed up for y'all. We bring peace to the peeps who worry about the small-time stuff guys." Shaggy responded as he was relaxing on the couch inside the mystery machine.

"Like what Shaggy said, we solve mysteries, not hunt real mon....monsters." Scooby replied with a shivering tone.

"Gang remember this is a learning experience for their son. With our combined power, with my special trap-making skills we can solve any mystery."

"Jinkies, Daphne I see Fred's love for traps is still going as strong as ever." Velma sarcastically replied remembering how many times Fred ignored Daphne for trap related things.

"Oh my, Velma, weren't you kinda like a super strict believer of science, huge denier of anything supernatural related? Look at Miss Science Genius now, and say hello little Miss Witch." Daphne fought fire with fire, bringing back Velma's past in an attack like she did with Fred and traps.

"Ladies, no need to fight, let's all just calm down and relax y'all. Like peace and love is all we need right now guys."

"Shut Up Shaggy" both Velma and Daphne responded at the same time.

"Enough of that gang, we should be arriving at their place any minute now. We all got to be on our best behaviors to show the kid how we handle our cases and trap-making skills."

. . .

Emma and James saw the mystery machine from outside the window. They had already known a little about the case they would be dealing with since Fred notified them ahead of time.

Five years ago they apparently came out of crystal cove due to a mystery they solved. This event in particular changed all their personalities, but they weren't possessed or under any sort of control.

No matter how much Emma and I poked around we never got any answers. But they quickly recovered after whatever happened. We didn't judge much because everyone had their secrets, and whatever went on wasn't harming us or them, so it wasn't our place to dig any deeper.

Velma used to be Emma's student when she was five to eight years old. Emma would go on the weekends to teach her some of the basics under Velma's mother's watch. Apparently, the magic in the family tends to skip a few generations every so often. So Velma's great-grandmother was the last one to be born with magic in the past few generations.

In order for it to not die out completely those without magic would be told about the family history, with all the information about the tell tale signs of a magical awakening.

Emma and I needed money back then so she applied to teach the basics for three years for a substantial amount of money. Apparently they came from old money and it didn't run out even with a few generations without a witch being born into the family.

Now we were cashing in a favor to get them to take us along with them. Now Lucas could hopefully learn safely about dangers and common sense in person.

We got in the van to only see the inside was bigger than the outside. Velma's spacial magical research had been advancing lately. The inside of the van was equal to our living room.

My son Lucas was admiring the scenes before his little eyes. He kept asking loads of questions while we rode to our destination in Redwood City. This ghost had been seen around the neighborhoods essentially terrorizing all the inhabitants. From Cars to teddy bears, all of them were stolen with no noticeable patterns.

Looking at Fred brought back some funny memories of some stories Emma told me about the dude. She had heard it from Velma who called asking for help when it happened. Fred went to Japan to learn trap magic, it involved many supposedly complex rituals for Fred to undergo. After learning from that witch for 2 years he finished his courses and mastered the spells. His record spell of learning trap magic was all due to sheer talent in trap magic in general.

He could now create nets at will, make steel cages from the air, and use his mana to make any kind of regular nonmagical trap. But the side effects were funny for Fred since he ignored the warning about this type of magic being meant for women only.

Everytime Fred used this spell he would turn into a literal girl version of himself every time it was used. Emma was called to their house three years ago when this happened. The spell's side effects only lasted one week every time he used the spell. The lingering effects would make him physically look like a woman for one month, without the total gender-bending nonsense going on.

Trap magic truly lived up to its name, especially since the magic came from Japan.

I wonder if tentacle magic exists, knowing them, it probably does exist in Japan. Long story short his orange ascot was enchanted to absorb all the side effects of the magic.

Now that orange ascot became a gender bending cursed item that would turn anyone who wore it into a woman. The curse didn't affect Fred though, the curse only lasted for as long as the person wore it. Truly a bizarre world we live in where the side effects of certain spells are that strange.

I wonder if Daphne took advantage of Fred going through this to experiment with her husband. I heard some girls experiment in college, if they did go through with it Fred must be a changed man in body and mind. The trap lover became a trap lover with a trap body. Can't tell anyone about my thoughts on this matter though.

If these cultured thoughts ever left my head my reputation would be ruined. My son already knows about my cultivation of reading hobbies due to my mistake.

Some of the books even corrupted my boy for a few weeks in how he talks or acts. If he were to see my hidden collection inside my ring, how would my family view these Japanese books of mine? Emma doesn't know, no one around me knows for that matter, this secret will be taken to the grave, with me always keeping up the act. I already get weird looks from Emma when I ask her to wear certain outfits from Japan, she doesn't need to know why.

40 minutes later. . .

It should have taken like 35 minutes, traffic added an extra 5 minutes. Well traffic was rather light today so I guess we are blessed.

"Son, you ready to go on our promised adventure" James spoke aloud with a big smile.

"Dad, stop acting fake with that smile, it looks weird."

"Boy, can't you just appreciate your pops trying to set the mood for this trip you kept begging for?"

"Whatever Dad, hey Shaggy are you human, I've been seeing you eat more food than you probably weigh this entire drive here."

"I'm 100% human, like if I wasn't my parents would be hiding something. Kid I was born with a special stomach, just like Scooby doo, he was born with the stomach and the ability to talk and think like a human."

"Shaggy like man you're looking like a twinge man." Lucas said while copying Shaggy's voice pretty easily.

Shaggy wasn't taking this insult lying down, so he grabbed a puppet from inside the chest nearby. He used some kind of spell to make it look like Lucas.

"Look at little old me, I'm Lucas and I ask loads of questions man. Look at me dude I can't even solve mysteries on my own man." The puppet sounded and looked exactly like Lucas but smaller.

The puppet was controlled by Shaggy, the voice was also done by him. Shaggy and Lucas shook hands before Shaggy started sharing his food with Lucas.

'One for one Shaggy, it's a tie in our points, but I'll get you back eventually' Lucas thought while trying to attempt to eat a giant ham and cheese sandwich Shaggy gave him.

'Little man thinks he can beat the Shag meister, lord of food and the man faster than Hermes himself. Like keep trying little man you ain't beating me in an eating competition.'

While Shaggy and Lucas were apparently having a secret eating competition. Shaggy had already eaten ten one feet long sandwiches, Lucas was still struggling to finish the first sandwich.

"Velma is your friend, Shaggy really human, it's almost as if he is a dragon with his appetite." Emma asked with concern.

"Miss Emma, Shaggy may or may not have eaten a dragon lacrima. He survived the process easily, but his enhanced hunger is one side effect of the process. This happened right after Crystal Cove when he felt the need to devour a mysterious red rock."

"So Shaggy is the strongest one here." Emma looked at Shaggy who was currently at the 50th 1-foot sandwich, and still going strong. Her son hadn't even finished his first sandwich.

"Miss Emma you may not know this, but ever since Shaggy ate that rock he arrogantly said none of the foes we faced since or before were his match. He even said none of them could make him use even 1% of his total power."

'Shaggy secretly told me he was learning something called ultra instinct, he said it would take ten years to complete. How can this dragon in human form even get any stronger, Shaggy isn't even trying, he just gets stronger seemingly without reason.' Velma thought as she knew no matter the mysteries they solved, no matter the dangers they faced she knew Shaggy could beat them all easily in her heart of hearts.

. . .

Soon enough he was going to leave the mystery machine to start his adventure. Lucas took one last look around to actually give a closer look towards the people who he will be hunting with.

Fred had blonde hair that was short, and black eyes, and a slight tan with a handsome face. His body matches the stereotypical football quarterback type build. He looked strong, but dad was overwhelmingly stronger if you judged solely based on appearances alone. Even if you brought actual stats I know dad would win. His outfit was a white golf t-shirt with a light blue shirt collar. Over his neck was an orange ascot in tied fashion. He was also wearing blue jeans with brown shoes.

Daphne was pretty, and all with her long orange hair with a light purple band in it, and white skin. She also had light purple eyes, her dress even matched her eyes in color, she had a light green ascot. She was even wearing light pink leggings with some sort of heels. She was pretty sure, but she wasn't the prettiest lady I'de seen before.

Shaggy's hair was light brown and short, with black eyes, light skin and an above average face. He looked super skinny with no real muscle or fat on his body anywhere. He was wearing a basic green t-shirt with baggage, brown pants and black shoes. The guy still looks like a twinge though.

Scooby was the same size as Fred when standing, and his fur was a dark brown color. His dog collar is cyan blue with a metal tag on it with a big letter S on it.

Velma looked above average, giving a nerdy vibe to her. She wore a pair of glasses with short hair. She was wearing a slightly puffy orange wool sweater with a mini turtleneck. This outfit combines with a cloth style red dress that reaches above her knees. Her shoes were red as she wore orange socks.

Velma had me a bit interested in her from what I knew about her already. Maybe it's because my mom is very knowledgeable in basically everything, but I find women who really know many things to be hot. For some reason I find smart women to be hotter than the stupid brainless beautiful women you commonly see as trophy wives in the media.

She attracted me with her knowledge alone, her being talented in space magic might have lured me in. This is something my mom doesn't truly even know.

Mom's usage of space magic is a total sham, it requires her to use space stones with heavy amounts of enchanting to barely make storage rings. The main designs for those rings were copied from publicly available knowledge. The way the car gets smaller is a combination of heavy amounts of enchanting with runes, and lots of transfiguration magic with a powerful space stone as a car system core connecting it all together.

Velma just casts a spell and boom, she teleports or expands space with her magic alone with minimal enchanting or resource usage to make her spells work. The question is do I have a crush on Velma for her as a person or the knowledge she holds? I'm not sure, but all I know is if I ever marry someone she needs to be smart, or else she's not for me.
