Chapter 15: Chapter 15: Adventures With Greed

'Mom and Dad should be gone for the next few days if my timing is right. A usual 'business trip' takes them anywhere from 12 hours on the short end to weeks on the long end. They tend to take two to four days usually per hunting trip. The harder the case the longer the time they take. I'm pretty sure my cloaking spell worked this time.., I was able to listen to Dad talking to Mom yesterday without either of them knowing; They talked about some trip that was probably going to take a week. So I have all the time in the world to sneak out of the house to head to Santa Clara for that special event. I'm already fourteen, the past year of training in my opinion opened up the door to many possibilities. They can't stop me now, I'll be getting a taste of my kind of freedom' I thought to myself as my smile was bigger than it's been

'My ability and capabilities to defend myself from most threats have skyrocketed like crazy. Simple gang members, even regular criminals with guns can't hurt me at my current level. While I'm not bulletproof like dad, my evasion skills, magic with general control over all the things I had at my disposal kinda enable me to easily take down any mundane criminal I might encounter.' I thought as I looked down at the ring mom made for my 14th birthday.

"What's the worst that can happen? I'm just going to meet my favorite authors in person to get a signature on my favorite novels in my collection. Since when was going outside to see an event dangerous now?" I said as my confidence started to soar.

"I wonder when Ranma is going to call me back like the dude left me on fucking read. I know for a fact he saw my message last night, but didn't respond or anything. The dude keeps making me mad, like I swear to god man, sometimes I can't even handle his bullshit some days with the ways he is acting normally sometimes."

"Well that's an issue for another day, today I'm going to get my things ready for this trip. It shouldn't take any longer than a day or two. Not like my parents are going to find out with the substitution hex doll I made sitting in my room. With them teaching me all the passwords to the barriers and watch systems all around the house I can just temporarily disable the aura sensors." I grinned at my own genius.

"Nothing Is holding me back from finally getting a bigger taste of freedom without them having to constantly be somewhere nearby. I hope the event is just like advertised online with fans across the world meeting up all in person at Santa Clara. The creators of the event even rented out an entire two-story building, using it to host the event."

"They announced that possibly thousands of people will be coming to the event over the week. I've never been to an event before, I wonder what will happen. I can't wait to go! What should I wear anyway, maybe a light yellow shirt with blue skinny jeans with white sneakers? Maybe a dark navy blue zip-up leather jacket. Maybe a tiny white top hat to go with my outfit. I mean white, dark navy blue, light blue, and light yellow go pretty well with my color pallet in my opinion." I shook my head in agreement at my fantastic fashion sense.

'My hair still reaches the middle of my back, and my height even grew two inches this past year alone. Maybe I'll train hard enough to surpass Dad in his height. I know that in another year puberty will do its magic and make me look more like my father than my mother. I know that in the future the days of being called a girl, or tomboy when I dress like myself will be over. No more will I talk in vc and get called a girl, or turn on the face cam only for them to boldly say to stop lying.' I thought while reflecting on my dark past.

'I know without a doubt in my mind, I'll look a fucking Viking by the time I'm 15 I'll look just like dad. My body just needs some time to adapt to my training fueling my growth. Hopefully, the potions mom has been giving work to increase permanent muscle growth.' My smile widened while I thought of the possible future.

. . .

'Since when have the streets been this clean? Where is all the traffic, what happened to the dirty dark gray sidewalks? Did the city seriously power wash every sidewalk? Where in the world did they get the budget after not embezzling their funding with expressive properties built to help the city? Like those tiny home projects, or help the homeless initiatives that feed off the suffering of people. All so they can get more funding... Those at the top of the ladder have been seen siphoning more money from the government every year with these plans. How can you receive hundreds of millions a year with multiple programs and still have a homeless crisis with dozens of other problems?' I looked around to see what should've been impossible in my eyes from what I knew about the city.

"Speaking of homeless people where the hell are they, I know that almost all the problems I listed off aren't just San Francisco issues. Wait, is it all just San Francisco or just most of California?" I voiced my thoughts, but no one around me even looked to question my sudden outburst.

"What the hell is this, all the cracks in the sidewalks I know used to be here are gone. Just like the cracks and potholes that were on the road last time I came to the city. What the fuck is happening here, the people themselves are also fucking weird." I started to wave my hand in front of someone's face only to get no reaction out of them. They even said sorry for the trouble as they walked away from me politely...

"Why is everyone I've seen acting polite all of sudden like they care about you? I haven't even seen anyone who isn't wearing something nice out. They all are smiling and laughing. It's all so odd."

'What's even more strange is the fact no one even tried to hit on me or look at me funny for the outfit I'm wearing. Am I just crazy or what, like what is going on? How can a city change this much in less than a year since I was last here.' I thought with the last thought being even more shocking...

'I've been walking for the last 30 minutes just looking around the city only to get more and more shocked. I haven't seen a single piece of trash since I came here. The air smells fresh like it's never been polluted before, be it the smoke from the wildfires, the smog from the cars, or the general smell the city tends to have.' I kept looking around to find a single fault in the city but found nothing as far as I could see.

'Not a single crime in sight or anyone for that matter showing any emotions besides being happy. Why do I. I. I am happy, nothing is wrong and everything is going great. Today is such a great day after all.' I thought with a big old smile across my very happy face on this perfect day.

. . .

'How can a city be so perfect anyway, not like it matters I just need to head to the event nearby... I even saw some of my dad's old hunting buddies. They were inside some sort of red circle with a pentagram in the middle with what looked to be a salt circle surrounding the red circle. Their expressions weren't happy, but I couldn't recognize it for some reas..reason...'

'They were happy without a doubt, I went past them to wave my hand, and told them to have a wonderful day in this ever-so-perfect city. The people were perfect, the weather was just right, and the city itself was beautiful with all the changes it made. It's almost as if God herself blessed this land with her imagination and greed, I mean love.' I thought.

. . .

Soon enough I arrived towards the building where the event was located. It was packed like the website said it would be, all my favorite authors came to the event. Oddly enough my eyes kept turning to the people in the crowd who held black books with no names. I didn't understand why my eyes shifted towards the books.

'I DIDN'T KNOW WHY, BUT I WANT THAT BOOK TOO! They are so beautiful, but why do I love that book, I want it, I NEED IT!' He thought to himself while almost drooling at the thought of obtaining that black book.

Lucas's eyes had an abnormal greed towards the book, but Lucas had hidden these emotions away in his heart to focus on this wonderful event. Lucas went from author to author to get the books signed he had in the suitcase, he was pulling around the entire time. Lucas even checked out unknown authors who seemingly had new and interesting books they were trying to pitch to those who passed them by.

Lucas kept looking around and occasionally tried some of the overpriced food at the event. He may have had an allowance, but he tried to hold himself back a bit from spending it all here. But, the voices in his mind said to let go a little... you only live once Lucas... Have fun, Lucas, just let yourself go a little Lucas...

He listened to the voices as he started to have even more fun at the event. He tried to approach the people in weird black clocks with weird purplish black aura around them who all held the Black Books, but every time he got close they seemed to vanish before his eyes into the crowd of people. He never even got to talk to a single member of what he thought was a group of cosplayers dressing as their favorite characters.

He still felt the need to follow them, but like before all of his attempts were unsuccessful... Eventually, they had inadvertently led him to find some new interesting authors. He even talked to them for a bit before thinking it over on weather he wanted the books or not.

. . .

I brought some extra books from some new authors, hopefully they have an interesting story to tell. I kept looking around before a woman had caught my eyes. She looked to be in her mid to early 20s. What had caught my eye was the fact she also had all the books I liked on her white table. The next thing to catch my eye was the 5 mysterious books she had on her table that gave off a magical glow.

The last and main reason was the fact she was holding a book, a book, a book, A BLACK BOOK JUST LIKE THEM!!! Her beauty was something else as well with her snow-white skin, hair as white as bone, eyes darker than night, and the black dress she wore, with a rainbow butterfly hair clip she had on.

The beauty she had while remarkable in her being the most beautiful woman I've ever seen didn't matter. The books she had carried on her had all my focus. I wanted to reach for those magical books she had on that table myself to learn more.

'Knowledge is power, knowledge is life, I want to, no I need to learn more. Yet, whoever she is, I probably shouldn't interact with her, it might be dangerous and I don't even know her. Mom told me to always be careful towards unknown people, monsters are usually honest in how they want to kill you. People aren't the same since they usually hide their inner monsters to strike when you're at your weakest.' I tried to resist the urge to talk to her with all my might, but my sense of self-control was fading all of a sudden...

'I want to go to her, but my mind tells me to be careful for some strange reason I don't even understand.'

The choice to not go towards her was never mine to begin with. I had been so dumbfoundedly stupid in how I was looking at her. I was basically standing here the entire time just looking at her with my mouth wide open. not even trying to hide my blatant stares towards her.

'Was I so zoned out to not even pay attention to my image with my blatant gawking?'

"*You know boy it's rude to stare at a tender maiden sitting alone, and not say hi or something.*" The unknown lady said calmly with a smile as she looked at me who was still staring at her.

'Oh shit, she can use the telepathy spell. Well, that's all but confirms she is a witch. Should I run or talk to her to hopefully get in her good graces to teach me more magic? What the hell am I thinking, this isn't the time to be greedy for more knowledge. Dude you got to control your lust for knowledge and try to act civil in hopes everything works out.' I gasped for some air before trying to refocus myself.

"I can't use that spell yet, sorry. Miss sorry for staring at you like that, it's just those five books you have caught my eye." I answered a bit before giving a mini bow to the unknown witch.

"It's alright, what's your name again if you don't mind me asking, kid." She asked while giggling a bit.

'FUCK, she wants my name, what if she can detect lies like Mom. Names have power and only your family, and close friends you trust should be told your true given name. What if she curses me if I tell the truth? I'll give her my go-to false name as a test'

"Miss, my name is Luke Bell, it's nice to meet you. Are you by chance a witch or user of magic"

"Luke Bell, it's nice to meet you, my name is Echidna. Yes, as you could probably tell with my telepathy spell I can use magic." she said with a lovely smile.

I started to look around to see whether or not people were staring at us. Hopefully, they thought we were a bunch of roleplayers or else we would be exposing ourselves to the real world right now...

"Luke, don't worry about everyone around us possibly overhearing our conversation. Just take a chair by my table sit down, and try to relax."

'Well she seems nice, but why do I sense a kind of miasma coming from her? I don't feel any fear towards this aura, but a warm comforting aura. Her name gives me a light headache every time she tells me.'

"Alright, I'll take you up on your offer Echidna." I sat down at the table across from Echidna's side. I had suddenly felt an unbelievable sense of dread staying near her. These warnings went unnoticed as they all faded away the instant they came.

'Why does my head hurt so much every time I hear her name? I. I. I...' I held my head as my eyes started to roll back into my skull.

"Luke, it seems you're having a headache, why don't you have some of my tea?" Echidna offered, the moment she did a teapot set appeared in the air before gently floating down to the table. The entire tea set was made of white porcelain with golden edges.

One tea cup floated towards Lucas before gently sitting down by his side at the table. Before long the teapot floated towards the cup to pour enough tea to fill the cup and not a drop more.

"Here drink up the tea was created by me personally in a very special way. You could even say some of the ingredients in the tea are very personal for me. It should help with whatever headache you're experiencing right now." she said but her entire speech went on death ears.

Lucas couldn't hear any of what Echidna just told him earlier. He felt as worms were crawling under his skin, eating away at his flesh. He heard and saw many strange symbols flood into his mind, his mind felt like it was going to explode with everything happening to him. The headache was long gone and replaced with something much worse.

Even in this state, his entire being was in this trance-like mindset and sought to devour whatever was contained within that tea cup immediately.

His right hand went down to forcefully take the cup and drink its entire contents. This forceful action should have spilled the entire contents held within the teacup long before it reached his mouth. Yet not a single drop was wasted as it all was feverishly devoured.

The cup eased the feeling of whatever was affecting him, but HE WANTED MORE. Lucas's eyes became orange, and half his hair became white.

Lucas lunged for the air unconsciously reaching for the still floating tea pot. The moment he grabbed it he started to drink the boiling tea contained within without limit. He drank more and more of the tea contained inside.

The tea pot had an auto regeneration function that filled it up with fresh homemade special tea the second it was empty. So Lucas had already drunk a few gallons worth of the stuff.

The entire process continued for five minutes straight without him ever stopping to rest or even breath for that matter, he kept drinking from the tea from the endlessly refilling teapot.

'Lucas just drank over fifteen times his body weight in my tea within five minutes. I wonder where it all went since his body only absorbed five cups of tea. Perhaps his unique soul devoured it on instinct alone. You just keep surprising me Lucas, I want to know more. I will learn everything about you by the time I'm down with you...'

Lucas's eyes started to regain their clarity as they shifted back from orange to light brown, same with his hair returning to normal. Echidna noted down the entire process with a smile on her face.

"Where am I, who are you again?" I asked not remembering what just happened before getting his books signed by his favorite authors.

'Memory loss, it seems he is more resistant against my mental manipulation skills now after devouring all that tea. Seems I need to work a new angle to get to know him.'

"My name is Echidna, I just came here a minute ago. I couldn't help but notice your storage ring. Whoever made it must be rather talented to work around their limitations to still craft a decent product."

'Oh ya Echidna, I was just sitting down at this table reading my books before she sat down across from me. We talked about our favorite books, and why we came here. Oddly enough we shared many of the same favorite book titles. Then our conversation branched out to magic as I noticed she had a few unknown magic books in her bag. It seems I zoned a bit just as we were talking about magical artifacts.' I blushed a bit before I continued talking.

"Echidna, sorry for zoning out during our conversation before, I don't know what came over me before. My parents keep warning me to get rid of that bad habit." I sighed while looking down a bit in shame.

"Lucas, don't worry it happens to the best of us. So do you want to by any chance become friends with little old me?" Echidna asked as she started acting shy around Lucas with a slight blush.

'Why is Echidna acting so cute all of sudden, she's knowledgeable, she has extensive knowledge from what our talks showed me way beyond even mom. I can't believe she wants to be friends with me.' My mind started to wander all of a sudden at Echidna's new act.

"Ya, I'll accept it if you're willing to be my friend as well." I asked politely hoping she accepted.

Echidna got up from her chair to come to Lucas's side before both her hands grabbed Lucas's left hand.

"Lucas, do you promise to never betray our relationship, to never falter in your ideals, and hopefully maintain your greed. Can you promise me that Lucas, all you need to say to is yes." Echidna asked while she leaned closer and closer to Lucas till she was practically all over him barely maintaining any sort of distance.

'Way too close, she's too close. Why is my newest crush coming this close to me, does she like me? I thought we were just friends. Why is this happening so soon? I need more time to mentally prepare myself.' My mind was in chaos with this new development happening before my eyes.

"Yes, Echidna whatever you want. You're getting a little too close to me right now. This isn't how friends are meant to act with each other yet." My face was as flushed as a tomato with the levels of embarrassment I was feeling right now.

Before Echidna backed away she kissed his forehead to seal the deal. Afterwards she went back to her side of the table. Her face had a creepy smile upon it, but Lucas didn't notice it as he was still trying to get over what just happened to him.

'She just kissed me, am I married to Echidna now? Are we a couple, mom said only couples kiss each other, and mom and dad are married...' my mind kept spiraling down a dangerous rabbit hole thinking of everything going on.

'How cute, the game just got way more entertaining with these new developments. Lucas might just be my first friendship in this world. I've never had a relationship of that level before like Lucas keeps thinking of in his little head of his. Who knows Lucas, if you keep trying you might become my first with the unknown future you hold when you turn 16 and its endless possibilities.' She smiled thinking of the anomaly's unknown future.

"With the contents of our relationship sealed, Lucas Tennyson Bellaster, will you take my hand in friendship? I'll promise to teach you anything you want to know as friends." She stated, ignoring the fact Lucas never even told her his name even once in the conversation, let alone his full name.

'And maybe something more physical if we become more than friends.' She thought poking fun at Lucas's thoughts at the mommet.

"I'll accept Echidna, I'll gladly be your friend and learn under you if you would permit it my new bestie" I spoke while grinning.

"Lucas one more thing, can you keep our friendship a secret, pretty please for this tender maiden you just befriended at her only command." She asked politely with a soft giggle.

"Ok, I'll try my best, Echidna."

. . .

Lucas and Echidna kept talking for hours as Lucas never left her side during the entire event. Soon enough with the event closing down for the day, they gave each other a final goodbye before separating.

"I'll see ya later Echidna, don't worry I'll call you once a day on the device you gave me like you asked." I said

"Lucas, remember what I said about needing to know something, just give me a call whenever you want to know something."

Echidna stayed behind while she watched Lucas leave in the dead of night, as she stood there looking in the same direction he left.

"My lady, are you sure it was wise to interact with one of the anomalies this closely? The boy is connected to the God of transformation, and the one we all avoid." My servant said trying to warn me of my actions.

"Rachnee, don't worry it's not an issue. Lucas won't end like the others I've seen over the eons." I replied as usual.

'Santa Clara, the city where me and Lucas finally got closer in. As the place where our meeting occurred let me give them a perfect utopia till the end of time. The effects of today's events of true perfection will continue to last. Anyone new who stays in the city will fall under its effects till they decide to leave. All who live in this city have the free will to do anything good, and anything else that doesn't hurt anyone else in their own homes.' I thought admiring my work of the perfect city. I may be imitating the FOOL and his design for his city, but that fool was split into multiple different identities in his madness, not like he can claim ownership over this.

'Klein, Sherlock Moriarty, Gehrman Sparrow, Dwayne Dantès, and Merlin Hermes. Those were all his identities if I am correct. That church of his is still trying to bring the FOOL back to reason. Not like it matters if we get to see a new player to the stage in this era.'
